Letter from the President of the Congregation
Stephen Rosen
I to welcome everyone to the dinnermarking twenty-five years of Congregation B’nai Avraham. This dinner is made particularly special to me since the
honorees include my mother, Yetta Rosen, an extraordinary person. We have much to be thankful for. If we look back, we see
significant accomplishment and growth. However, I prefer to lookforward, to concentrate on what remains undone, rather than onwhat has been done. Recently the Brooklyn Heights area hasgrown in population. This is a tremendous opportunity and ourchallenge is to reach the new people. I urge all our members toinvite people new to the area to a Shabbat meal or Shabbaton. We havea terrific community; let’s show people what we are about.
Apart from opportunities, there are problems, of course. In addition to needing revenues, our problems are positive ones. They arise from the many classes, activities and outreach. Inaddition to funds, we must demand even more from ourselvesJewishly — to reach our fellow Jews in the spirit of love to showboth those with little or no background, as well as those whohave drifted away, the joys of Torah and community. Let uscontinue our dream to reach ever more people in a meaningful, loving and accepting manner.

Wishing you all a kosher and happy Passover. Next Year in Jerusalem!

Letter from the Rabbi
Aaron L. Raskin
M :Yetta Rosen, Bert Agus, .., Gary Gottlieb, Adamand Sita Hess, and Pery Krinsky — and a special
thank you to all our guests. The number represents reflection. For when a prophet
sees an angel of G-d, they usually see him like one who is lookinginto a mirror — as a reflection — with the angel standing behind. This is why the prophets would state before relating their message,“Like this says G-d.” LIKE in Hebrew is vfKO, which is spelledwith the letters CHOF HEI, which together equal the number .
The lesson is clear: represents reflection — we mustreflect how we act towards others; and we must reflect on ourrelationship with G-d. It is very apropos in our twenty-fifth yearthat we encourage ourselves and our community to grow stronger, and to maximize our potential — and like the web, which alsoturned years old this month — reach out to bring the Torah andour message to the thousands and hundreds of thousands.
May G-d bless all the honorees and all of our wonderfulsupporters and members for their benefactions and kindnessesand may they all be blessed tenfold, one-hundred fold, etc. —and may the time come very soon when, as our prophets haveforeseen “the entire world will be filled with the knowledge ofG-d as the waters cover the sea.”

C B’nai Avraham thanks the many peoplewho contributed to the Journal this year. J S, a professional graphic designer of

We benefited again from J B’s superlativeprofessional expertise in laying out the Journal and the enormoustime commitment this entailed.
This is the first time D P, our new OfficeManager, was confronted with the arduous task of receiving andkeeping track of ads, reservations and payments, and she rose tothe occasion as if she had been doing so for years.
S S contributed his cinematographic talents inmaking the video.
In the photo section itself we acknowledge those whoshared with us pictures taken at their celebrations and events. We also thank those who sent in photographs that we could notprint because of technical limitations.

Lawyer of the Year
Pery D. Krinsky, Esq.
A , Beth and Joel, who met years ago at a UJA Young Leadership meeting,Pery Krinsky grew up living and breathing their belief
system, predicated upon advocating for tolerance, education, tzedakah (charity) through action and compassion, a commitmentto creating a Jewish home and supporting Israel.
Pery grew up a “traditional” Jew, which included: twice-a-week Hebrew School; a Kosher home; pre-Purim hamantaschanbaking parties; backyard Sukkah galas; Jewish youth group; Jewishcamp; working in the Catskills as a waiter; and helping his parentsthrow homecoming parties for people like Natan (Anatoly)Sharansky to celebrate the freedom to openly practice Judaism.Every Friday night was Shabbat dinner, followed by Synagogue, only to rush home to find out “Who shot JR.”
His parents stressed that education and action were thecornerstones to understanding the roots of bigotry, the need for asecure Israel, challenges facing Jews and non-Jews, who are notfree from being targeted and mistreated by virtue of their faith, religious beliefs, race, gender or orientation. He witnessed hisparents lead by example, and practice what they preached. Pery’sparents provided him with the foundation and freedom to makechoices for himself, and he did choose.

At age thirteen, Pery was becoming more observant, and a year later he made the choice to wear a yarmulke to publicschool. He then chose to spend that summer learning how towrite in Hebrew to help with his other decision to switch frompublic school to a Yeshiva high school.
In , Pery decided to attend Yeshiva in the West Bank,in Efrat, Israel. He quickly focused his attention away from trad -itional Talmud studies, to volunteer at Beit HaYeled, a safe-havenfor children in need. He spent most of his other time witnessingdemocracy at work, traveling to hafgannot (rallies), for and againstthe Oslo Peace Accords, and photographing the faces of Israeliand Palestinian children, men and women. These images and thestories they captured have never left Pery, and continue to influencehis choices. Twenty years later, for the first time, Pery returned to Israel as part of the FIDF Young Leadership Mission, reaffirming that Israel can never be forgotten or neglected, must

always be elevated and protected, and forever celebrated.Pery has become a “lawyer’s lawyer,” having dedicated his
entire professional career to representing and providing guidanceto lawyers, judges and law school students and graduates. Afterworking with Michael S. Ross, Esq., for more than a decade, in , Pery formed a law firm focusing on ethics-based defenselitigation. Pery strives to practice law in the same manner heendeavors to live his life, based upon notions of fairness, valuefor human life, being a good person and always trying to do the right thing.
Pery frequently lectures at bar associations and law schoolson topics involving ethics, personal and professional responsibilityand academic integrity. Among other positions, Pery serves asthe Chair of the Ethics Committee of the Enter tainment, Arts &Sports Law Section of the New York State Bar Association; andthe Chair of the Committee on Professional Discipline of theNew York County Lawyers’ Association.
“It’s never too late to come home,” and upon moving toBrooklyn in , Pery returned to the type of home in which hegrew-up — Congregation B’nai Avraham and Chabad of BrooklynHeights. With the love, support and guidance of Rabbi Raskinand his family, Pery has committed himself anew to the veryfoundation built by his parents forty-five year ago, where one isnot defined by a label or degree of observance, but, rather, byone’s ruach (sprit) and neshama (soul).
Congregation B’nai Avraham gives the Lawyer of the YearAward to Pery D. Krinsky in recognition of his commitment toprotect and enhance ethical practice in our legal system.

To My Parents
“Remember your obligation as a parent, handdown the Torah to your children just as yourparents did for you when you were a child.”
You have fulfilled your obligation by hand -ing down and instilling in me your beliefsystem, predicated upon advocating fortolerance, education, tzedakah through action
and compassion, and a strong commitment to creating a Jewishhome and supporting Israel.
My entire life I have been witness to you leading by example, and practicing what you preached — not as my mother, not as
my father, but as “my parents.”
The Friday Night Rules were simple. You must be home forShabbat dinner. Invite as many friends as you want. Eat as much as you want. Sleep as much as you want.
Hugs are always free of charge. You created a Jewish home thatwas safe, warm and inviting to others; you created a Jewish
community that now thrives.
With unconditional love, you provided me with the foundationand freedom to make choices for myself. When I did choose, you encouraged, inspired, supported and believed in me.
You told me that no matter how little or how much we ever had,we would always be rich. I now understand.
I love you Dad and Mom …I respect you Mom and Dad.

Am Yisrael ChaiThe People of Israel Are Alive
Our trip to Israel allowed us to meet the women and men of the IDF, who define valor, selflessness, intelligence, courage, integrity, strength and spirit. They helped us tounderstand why Israel can never be forgotten or neglected, that is must always be elevated and protected, and it must
forever be celebrated.
Our trip to Israel reminded us that “Zachor (to remember) is to ensure that the past will never be forgotten and its memory
will always serve as a guide for the future. ‘Never Again’ is not limited to the horrors of a particular time or place, nor by extent or methods, but rather it symbolizes the
Jewish people’s collective resolve to never stand by the bloodof their brethren and to never allow innocents to be
brutalized for the crime of being Jewish.”
Our trip to Israel proved that “Friends Are Hard to Find, Difficult to Leave,
Impossible to Forget.”

for Grandma Yetta on the occasion of her th birthday:
We are immortal to the extent we effect positivechange in the lives of others; leaving them withpriceless memories of us. Because of her
commitment to actively enhancing the lives of somany, Grandma Yetta is both priceless and eternal.
She is more than a cherished loved one. To me, she is a shining example to be emulated.
