Mazel Tov! We have many reasons to rejoice these days. A big mazel tov to Adina Weinberg and Mitchell Stein on their beautiful wedding. Congratulations, once again, to Joe Kufert on receiving the Unsung Hero award from the Dallas Jewish Community Foundation (DJCF). And mazel tov to us for receiving a $7,500 Baer Foundation grant for technology to support live stream-ing and remote learning. Speaking of unsung heroes, there are many working dili-gently behind the scenes. Elaine Levitt and her Hesed committee provide meals and support to those in our community who are ill, grieving, or otherwise in need of a helping hand. You may have received a greeting card from our Sunshine committee, under the capable direc-tion of new committee chair Denise Pollis. Our CATS in College committee headed up by Amy Balis and Deb-bie Cohn packaged up goodies for our college students, near and far, and organized a virtual college oneg. Even less visible is the good work being done by our financial committees under the guidance of Michael Dubner and Michael Roy. And let’s not forget Hevra Kadisha (Amy Balis and Jacob Ratner and their re-spective teams) or our tireless Ritual chair, Farzin Bakh-shian. Our auxiliaries led by Cynthia Brooks (Sisterhood), Da-vid Ginchansky (Men’s Club), and Philip Balis (Hazak) have been prolific in their fall programming and other activities aimed at engaging and educating all of us. If you haven’t attended a recent program put on by our auxiliaries, you’re missing out! Lisa and Ben Kenter, along with Stephanie Kufert, made our fall flower sale a resounding success. There’ll
be another sale in the spring (before we know it!). Also coming this spring is our annual Weinberg Golf Classic, planned by Jeff Arbesman and his committee, and our first annual Love Tennis tournament, organized by Michelle Silver and Ricardo Szperling. By now I’m sure you’ve heard about our 10th annual Schol-ar in Residence program, organized by Warren Harmel and his dedicated committee. (What’s that? You’ve been mean-ing to register but haven’t gotten around to it? Visit our web-site and do it today!) You’ll be hearing lots more about the Menorah Project and associated programming. The committee is run by Julia Kaufman, Jeanette Pincus and Debbie Rajunov. Fund-raiser extraordinaire, Marcy Kahn, has created incredible opportunities for pecuniary participation. Our search committee is hard at work interviewing qualified candidates interested in being our next Executive Director. Past President Barrett Stern is leading this effort along with Jeff Dworkin, Jonathan Goodman, Nancy Rabhan, and Susan Zetley. Of course, both our rabbis, along with Har-vey Swento, are closely involved in the process as well. (They’re keeping me in the loop as well.) There are too many volunteers and committees to mention everyone. If you’d like to recognize someone for their ef-forts, please drop me a line ([email protected]), and I’ll include a “shout out” next time I get the opportunity. I wish all of you a Happy Hanukkah and a healthy end to 2020! Please use good judgment and keep your distance as you celebrate and catch up with friends and family over win-ter break.

For all eight nights, Congregation Anshai Torah’s lights of Hanukkah will be bright with laughter and merriment, cooking and connections on-site and online. “The message of Hanukkah is that light can overcome darkness and we look forward to celebrating the shortest days of the year with light,” said Congregation Anshai To-rah’s Rabbi Michael Kushnick. “As the days get darker earlier, our hanukkiot get brighter with each additional light, as we all pray our own challenges will be overcome by our own light.” Beginning Thursday, December 10, on each weeknight of the holiday, menorah lightings are at 6 pm, with minyanim at 6:15 pm outside the shul at the base of the Haymann Family Hanukkiah. Donuts and cider will be provided to those in-person and sweet feelings transmitted to all Zooming online. On Friday night, lighting begins at 5 pm, with Kabbalat Shabbat service following; on Saturday night at 6:05 pm; and on Sunday evening all are invited in person at 4 pm to socially distance while enjoying latkes and more. Families asked to bring coats and unwrapped toys to be donated to those in need. On December 14 and 15, Rabbi Stefan Weinberg, Rabbi Michael Kushnick and Rachel Blum will be making Anshai Torah’s Mobile Hanukkiah visits to CAT neighborhoods with lights, cider and donuts to those registering in ad-vance. (email [email protected]) At 7 pm on Saturday, December 12, Rabbi Stefan Wein-berg will lead a second havdallah service, and hanukkiah lighting as part of Hazak’s screening of “The Jewish Brain.” Beginning at 9 am on Sunday, December 13, Men’s Club will have their annual, and socially distanced, Latke Fry, and on Monday, December 14, CAT’s Sister-hood celebrates with a virtual game night.
At 8 pm on Wednesday, December 16, comedian Joel Chasnoff (who has taken the stage in 10 countries) will take to the virtual stage with a “Jokes on Us” event featuring his very per-sonal Jewish take on Jewish life. “The Jewish world is my niche. It’s a world I know and could personally write about. People love comedians who share their truth and that’s what I do,” said Joel, coming to the audience live, from his home in Ra’anana, Isra-
el. “My show now is more spontaneous with engagement
from a chat box. Still, it’s no less filled with laughter and good feels.” Joel is a native of Evanston, IL who credits his nine years at Solomon Schechter Day School of Metropolitan Chica-go, and summers at Camp Ramah Wisconsin - including his junior year summer in Israel - and Israeli foreign exchange students at his home, with his absolute Jewish connection, devotion, and ultimate decision to make aliyah. After graduat-ing from University of Pennsyl-vania, Joel spent two years in the IDF before returning State-side to forge his way through the startup life of a comedi-an. Joel met his wife Dorit while at an event at Brooklyn Col-lege’s Hillel and the couple are now parents of four. Five years ago, the family sold their belongings and back-packed around the world for a year. The six made their way through South America’s Lima, Bolivia, Chile, Argenti-na and Brazil, then across the pond to South Africa, Na-mibia and Botswana, to India, Thailand, Australia and Ja-pan. After a one-month return to the U.S. to bid farewell to family, the couple chose to move to Israel. Until March, Joel made more than 50 trips to the States to perform. Once the pandemic hit, everything stopped - for a bit, until the world realized that bits could happen from anywhere. “People are hungry to laugh, and entertainers are hungry to entertain,” said Joel, the son of Carol and Ira Chasnoff, his father a Bay City, TX native and the couple former Camp Young Judaea/Wimberley counselors. “We’ve all learned to engage, to accept how things are and to enjoy each other however we can.” “It’s important on this holiday so filled with joy to share that joy with our community, and Joel Chasnoff is a great gift to all of us,” said Rabbi Kushnick. “His incredible talent to bring us to laugh at our own lives and identity is something we can all enjoy.” And finally, all students through twelfth grade are invited to participate in CAT’s writing contest, submitting entries

The Jewish Brain: Neuroscience, Philosophy, Ritual and Ethics
This program may be the long-awaited answer to the question? "What is a Yiddishe Kop” (Jewish head)! Dr. Andrew Newberg shares his research and findings in this fascinating video presentation. Learn how your brain processes reading the Torah, davening on Shabbat, or thinking about keeping Kosher. Explore with us and see in “living color” how the different elements of Judaism and Jewish practices effect the brain. Then en-joy a surprising review of Jewish mysticism! Dr. Andrew Newberg is a neuroscientist and professor at Thomas Jefferson University and adjunct professor at The University of Pennsylvania. He is a pioneer in the neurological study of religious and spiritual experiences, a field known as “neurotheology.” Look for the January issue of Kol Emet, which will detail interesting and fun events Hazak is planning for everyone to keep the winter blahs at bay! In the interim, we wish you and your family a healthy, safe and de-LIGHT-ful Hanukkah!

Hello from Sisterhood! Who’s ready to “get lit” with Sisterhood? Join us Monday, December 14 via Zoom for Hanukkah Bingo and other fabulous games [this is a free event but registration is required]. We promise you a good time! I hope everyone enjoyed the 25-day Gratitude Challenge we had on our Sisterhood Facebook Page – I learned so much about everyone and really loved the opportunity to express my gratitude for a variety of people and things in different ways. Thank you for your participation and for sharing. If you would like to join our private Facebook Page, we would love to have you – it’s a great source of information and we sure have a lot of fun! Join at Facebook group (Facebook/CAT – Sisterhood). You can also find information about Sisterhood at https://www.anshaitorah.org/sisterhood Thank you to everyone who came to our first book club meeting - I really enjoyed our thoughtful discussion. Our next book club meeting will be on Thursday, February 4, 2021 at 7pm via Zoom. We are reading The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop by Fannie Flagg. This is the sequel to Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café (which was also made into a charming movie). We hope you will all join us on February 4
th for another fantastic discussion.
SAVE THE DATE! Friday, February 5, 2021 will be the annual Sisterhood Shabbat/Torah Fund program. Our honorees are Marcy and Dr. Jeff Kahn. We look forward to a wonderful Kabbalat Shabbat service wherein we will be honoring these very two deserving congregants. More information about Sisterhood Shabbat/Torah Fund will be sent out soon.
What is Torah Fund? The annual Torah Fund Campaign of the Women’s League of Conservative Ju-daism helps preserve, promote and support Conservative/Masorti Judaism by supporting the five-degree granting seminaries of the Conservative/Masorti movement: The Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS), Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies, Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies, Seminario Rabinico Latinoamericano and Zacharias Frankel College.
There are multiple levels of donation opportunities for Torah Fund. Donations of $180 or more will receive this beautiful pin (which can also be worn as a necklace) as a gift in recognition of your donation. Please contact Bonnie Rubinstein/Gilda Zucker, Torah Fund co-chairs, for more information and to make a donation. To learn more about Torah Fund and Women’s League, we invite you to visit https://www.wlcj.org/about/torah-fund/ We want to make certain you know you are more than welcome (and encouraged) to invite your friend(s)/family member(s) who are not currently an Anshai Torah member or Sisterhood member to Sisterhood events. (P.S. - Non-Anshai members can join Sisterhood, too!) We want/need you as a Sisterhood member – it’s not too late to join Sisterhood! If you or someone you know has not joined Sisterhood for financial reasons please contact me – no one will be turned away as a Sisterhood member for an inability to pay membership dues. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me – I love hearing from you. Please feel free to email ([email protected]) or text/call me. We cannot thank you enough for your continued support of Sisterhood – we couldn’t (and wouldn’t want to) do this without you.
And in case no one has told you lately, you are AMAZING, BEAUTIFUL, and FABULOUS!

Men’s Club. . .camaraderie and commitment
On October 25, a small but mighty group of Men’s Club members took down the Sukkah in record time. A big thank you to those who were there to take the Sukkah down, including Jeff Romick, Mark Romick, Howard Eisenberg, Matt Kurtzman, and Brad Welcher! Just as quickly, Men’s Club is back at it, setting up the frame of the Sukkah to allow for services and social gatherings to still be possible for community engagement and building. Many thanks to those who helped build it back up! We also are happy to report a successful collaboration with the other auxiliaries, Hazak and Sisterhood, on November 15. The event, titled “L’dor V’dor: Crucial Conversations for the Future,” had Rabbi Kushnick brilliantly moderate a conversation between Michael Cohen and Ron Nevelow on the important topic of discussing wills, power of attorney, estate planning and more between parents and their family, spouse to spouse, and adult children with their aging par-ents. We are excited by the success of this program and plan to continue to work together with Hazak and Sisterhood on issues and topics important to the whole Anshai community. This month, Men’s Club will continue the tradition of the Latke Fry, providing these tasty treats to the Anshai communi-ty even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Frying is currently scheduled in a social distant friendly way for Sun-day, December 13, starting at 9 am. The best part is, you get to be the taste tasters before anyone else gets to try it…and when you taste test, you get it fresh from the fryer!!! Interested? Please join us as well as RSVP at https://www.anshaitorah.org/event/mens-club-latke-fry1.html. Please keep checking ShulCloud for updates on Men’s Club Events and information coming up, including the Youth Scholarship, Online Poker Night, World Wide Wrap, and Men’s Club Shabbat (the updated Men’s Club page is https://www.anshaitorah.org/mensclubmembership). As mentioned previously, if you have ideas for any events or specific topics important to you, please feel free to send them to [email protected].

Our CATs in College committee continues to connect our students to Anshai Torah while they are in college, graduate school, or active military. Most of your students are finishing up their semester, either in person or remotely. Need-less to say, college looks very different today than during typical times. We aim to support our kids as their lives are turned a little bit upside down during the Covid-19 pandemic. We are pleased to offer these great projects to all children of Anshai Torah families at no charge. To be included, please remember to let us know about your child in college (or if they’re graduating) and send us their updated contact information at [email protected].
If they have had a change of address or have moved home, please let us know as soon as possible. Your students should have received their "Chai Y'all" Fall Care Package which was mailed at the end of October. Thank you again to Alisa Makler and Debbie Rajunov for a fantastic job! It was filled with a "Chai Y'all" CATs in College mug and all sorts of treats to use in the mug (hot chocolate, tea, oat-meal, mug cake & Kosher ramen!) We had a great time on our Thanksgiving College Shabbat! Thanks to all of the families who participated! Have your students look out for a special December/Hanukkah/end-of-the-semester gift from CATs in College in their inboxes! Have your student send photos of how they are enjoying Jewish life on campus these days! Please consider making a contribution to the CATs in College fund so we can continue connecting to our students with fun packages, gift cards, and more. To make a contribution, log into shulcloud and, under the "donations and payments" tab, select "CATs in College" from the dropdown menu.

The Dallas Regional Kehillah High(DeReKH) is completing a wonderful first semester of classes. Students have the option to learn in-person or via Zoom. The curriculum includes American Jewish History, History and growth of anti-Semitism, and a Jewish approach to preparing for college life. In addi-tion, students have elective options of either The Meaning of Life or Israel through Television, Movies, and Music. After so many months of separation, one of the best parts of my week is seeing the excitement that the teenagers share as they see their friends arrive each week. Judaism is communal religion and our teens greatly benefit from interacting with their Jewish peers. Masks and social distancing is enforced for all participants. It is not too late to join. Please be in touch with Rabbi Kushnick at [email protected] if you know any 8-12th Grade stu-dents who would like to be part of this wonderful program.

We will be having grade specific virtual meet ups throughout the next couple of months. It will give us a chance to hang out with our friends and meet new peo-ple in our grade while participating in fun activities. Please keep an eye out on your email for the dates. Anshai Torah Preschool—your early childhood home
Celebrating our Thanks While Thanksgiving is definitely an American holiday, there are many parallels to our Jewish story. The Jewish peo-ple can definitely relate to leaving a land to start anew as a result of religious persecution. We have been exploring several concepts over the last few weeks that tie in well to the holiday theme. Hachnasat Orchim- Welcoming Guests Todah- Thank you Tzedakah- Helping Others The preschool had our traditional Thanksgiving program on the 20
th. Each class created a video and sang or
danced. On Thursday the 19th, we had an outdoor activity for Pre-K – 1
st grade where we made a corn soufflé, ice
cream cones tee pees and made a bracelet to tell the Thanksgiving story. Finally, on Sunday the 22nd
, every Reli-gious School class participated in Thanksgiving Activities. We made cranberry sauce, Turkey Apples, Leaf Lanterns and shared a virtual feast of gratitude. I have included some photos form the Pre-K, K & 1
st grade Take & Bake
event. Rachel Blum
