The history of this breed traces back at least twenty-eight centuries and the Maltese is one of the few known breeds tohave retained its name of origin. The Roman Emperor Claudius, and Rome’s Governor of Malta, Publius each owned aMaltese. Publius was known to indulge his devotion to his pet with poetry and art immortalizing the dog. It was oncebelieved that the Maltese possessed curative powers. The dog was placed on a pillow and given the finest foods. TheMaltese was imported into Britain during the nineteenth century and became the preferred pet of the aristocracy. In 1888the breed was registered with the American Kennel Club and by the 1990’s, the Maltese was ranked in the top 15 of allbreeds, remaining a very popular breed in the United States today.

The Maltese has been bred to have little variation in appearance. It has silky long white hair which almost scrapes theground. Sometimes the ears have some slight lemon or tan coloring, though this is discouraged.

EARS MUZZLE TAIL

The American Staffordshire Terrier can trace its roots all the way back to the nineteenth century in England. The EnglishStaffordshire Terrier was created when various terriers were crossed with the Bulldog. The crossbreeding resulted in theactive and powerful breed that came to the attention of the United States public in 1870. American breeders then focusedtheir attention and efforts to increasing the size and weight of the American Staffordshire Terrier. These breeding effortsresulted in a Staffordshire Terrier that was recognized as a separate breed by the American Kennel Club in 1936. In1972, the current name of “American Staffordshire Terrier” was adopted. The American Staffordshire Terrier was onceused primarily for fighting. That practice, however, was banned in the early 1900’s and two separate variations of thebreed were gradually developed.

The American Staffordshire Terrier can be any color, with solid, particolor, or patched black, brown, tan, brindle (blackand brown striped), liver, red or fawn. Black or blue mask, brindle or tan points are commonly seen traits in this breed.Ears may also appear different due to cropping.

Shih

Tzu

EARS MUZZLE TAIL

The Shih Tzu was a breed that was created in Tibet during the seventeenth century. The development of the Shih Tzuwas achieved by the crossbreeding of the Lhasa Apso and Pekingese breeds. This crossbreeding occurred when a LhasaApso was given as a gift by the Dalai Lama to the Emperor of China. The Emperor had a Pekingese in his palace and thisPekingese mated with the Lhasa, resulting in the world’s first litter of Shih Tzu puppies. Eventually, the breed becamevery popular in the Imperial Court, but in 1908 after the death of Empress T’zu Hsi, most Shih Tzu breeding came toa stop. This was further complicated by the Communist Revolution in China, which nearly caused the breed to becomeextinct. The Shih Tzu was saved, however, by a pool of 14 dogs that were introduced into England. The Shih-Tzu did notfind its way to America until after World War II, when they were brought back with American soldiers. The breed receivedofficial American Kennel Club recognition in 1969.

The Shih Tzu is a breed with a wide variety of colors, with all permissible under the breed standard. The colors can beblacks, browns, silvers, creams, and brindle (black and brown pattern) in solid, particolor or tricolor with lots of white.Black markings or a black mask are also seen in this breed.

MIXED-BREED ANCESTRY

What Does the Mixed-breed Ancestry Mean for HONEY?

A portion of Honey’s ancestry was predicted to be mixed beyond the three generations we test for. It isdifficult to identify strong individual breed signals in this mixed portion, so we have listed the geneticbreed groups with the strongest statistical likelihood below. The breed groups are listed in order of strengthwith the most likely at the top of the list.

The most common ancestral trait of this group is being usedfor hunting. Some use acute powers of scent to follow a trailwhile others demonstrate the gift of stamina as they rundown a quarry. Beyond these two common traits, however, generalizations about hounds are hard to come by as the groupis comprised of a very diverse lot of breeds.

Example Breeds: Basset Hound, Beagle, Treeing WalkerCoonhound, Bloodhound

This group consists of dogs typically bred for the specificpurpose of human companionship, and many are popular petsbecause of their gentle nature. They became more common asthe concept and luxury of dogs as pets prevailed.

Example Breeds: Bichon Frise, Pug, Shih Tzu, Keeshond,Pomeranian

The Terrier Group ancestors were bred to hunt and kill vermin. They are often characterized as feisty and energetic dogswhose sizes range from fairly small to much larger.

Example Breeds: Russell Terrier, Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier,Standard Schnauzer, Chihuahua, Miniature Pinscher

The Asian Group is comprised mainly of breeds from the Asianand Arctic regions of the world. Often bred for guarding orworking they have been invaluable assets to man throughoutthe ages.

Example Breeds: Alaskan Malamute, Chinese Shar-Pei, ChowChow, Siberian Husky

MDR1 SCREENING

MDR1 Screening Results

Condition Gene Mode of Inheritance Test Results

Multi-Drug Sensitivity MDR1 Dominant Normal/Normal

Please be sure to share these results with your veterinarian at yourfirst opportunity. They may be critical to the health care of your dog.

Test Results AnalysisMDR1 Normal/Normal - These dogs have two copies of the normal MDR1 gene and do not have the MDR1mutation. They will not pass on the mutation to their offspring. These dogs are not at increased risk forexperiencing side effects from drugs that are pumped by P-glycoprotein.

About MDR1MDR1, or Multi-Drug Resistance-1 is a genetic mutation found in many of the herding breeds, some sight-houndbreeds and many mixed breed dogs. The MDR1 gene is responsible for production of P-glycoprotein, which is atransport pump that plays an important role in limiting drug absorption and distribution (particularly to the brain),and in enhancing the excretion of many drugs used in dogs.

Some dogs, particularly herding breeds or mixed-breed dogs with herding breed ancestry have a mutation in theMDR1 gene that makes them defective in their ability to limit drug absorption and distribution. These dogs are alsoslower to eliminate drugs from the body that are normally transported by P-glycoprotein. All dogs have two copiesof this gene, and dogs with mutations in both copies will be much more sensitive to many commonly used drugs.Even dogs with only one copy of the mutation, however, are more sensitive to drugs than dogs with two normalMDR1 genes. Therefore it is important to test your dog and share your results with your veterinarian so they canprovide your dog with the best possible care.

For more information about MDR1 and a full list of drugs affected by MDR1 please visit:http://www.wisdompanel.com/mdr1_disease_screening/ or http://vcpl.vetmed.wsu.edu

Origins of the TestThe discovery of the mutation of the multi-drug resistant gene (MDR1) and its effects on multi-drug sensitivityin dogs, was made by Washington State University. It is a patent-protected diagnostic test offered by WashingtonState University that has been licensed to Mars Veterinary for use in the Wisdom Panel tests.

HOW KEY PHYSICAL TRAITS ARE INHERITED

The Influence of Breeds on AppearanceThis report reveals the breeds detected in your dog’s DNA. It also includes checklists of physical traits associatedwith these breeds. Breeds can combine their influences in countless, fascinating ways. It’s the unique combinationthat makes your dog one-of-a-kind.

Your dog may behave like, or strongly resemble, just one of the breeds in its makeup. However much more commonlyyour dog’s looks and personality will blend aspects of these breeds. In the example below you can see how many ofFrankie’s physical traits are due to a blending of breed influences.

FEATHERINGThe longer hair on thelegs, tail and around theears, is due to dominantmodifier genes availablefrom the ShetlandSheepdog.

BLACK PIGMENTThis coloring in thenose, eye rims, lips andpads on the feet is dueto one copy of the blackgene variant, availablefrom all three ancestralbreeds.

WHITE SPOTTINGThis is due to a lack of pigment andis often found in the extremities (feet, chest, face, etc.), but can also extendover more of the body. It can be due tomany genes including those found inthe three ancestral breeds here.

BRINDLE COAT COLORThe black and tan striping in Frankie’scoat is a dominant trait coming fromone copy of the brindle gene variant. This is available from the ItalianGreyhound, Parson Russell Terrier andShetland Sheepdog.

SHORT HAIRThis is due to one copyof the gene variant fromthe Italian Greyhound orthe Parson Russell Terrierthat is dominant over thelong coat gene from theShetland Sheepdog.

Wisdom Panel found these breeds in our example dog Frankie:

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Predicted Adult Weight ProfileBased upon the breeds detected in Honey’s ancestry and the genetic markers analyzed by Wisdom Panel, as well asthe information provided that Honey is female and spayed, we have calculated the likely weight that Honey shouldreach when an adult. The Wisdom Panel target weight profile is presented as a range based on the unique mix andproportion of breeds detected.

• The adult weight is predicted to be between 16 - 29 lbs.

Many factors can influence an adult dog’s weight, including sex and neuter status. Both of these factors have beenused to calculate the predicted weight profile. Another major influence on canine weight is body condition score, which is a factor of your dog’s lifetime nutrition and exercise regimen. Talk to Your VeterinarianCongratulations on taking the steps to learn about Honey’s ancestry and to understandwhat breeds are in your mixed breed dog using Wisdom Panel! Knowing your dog’s breedsis more than a novelty, it is a medical necessity. Each breed in your dog's genetic pawprint may have unique health concerns you should know about so that you can providea lifetime of excellent care.

We recommend discussing your dog’s ancestry report and genetic disease screen results with your veterinarian, ashe or she can help you use your Wisdom Panel report to help better care for Honey. The next time you visit yourveterinarian, consider asking these questions in addition to any you come up with on your own:

• Are there any specific issues that may be relevant to my dog’s well-being?

• Are there any special techniques that may help in training a dog with this particular mix?

• Are there any particular dietary considerations to bear in mind for a dog like mine?

How Wisdom Panel WorksThe process started when you sent a sample to our laboratory, where the DNA was extracted from the cells andexamined for the 321 markers that are used in the test. The results for these markers were sent to a computer, that evaluated them using a program designed to consider all of the pedigree trees that are possible in the lastthree generations. The trees considered include a simple pedigree with a single breed (a likely pure-bred dog), twodifferent breeds at the parental level (a first-generation cross), all the way up to a complex tree with eight differentgreat-grandparent breeds allowed.

Our computer used information from over 200 breeds, types and varieties from our breed database to fill thesepotential pedigrees. For each of the millions of combinations of ancestry trees built and considered, the computer gaveeach a score representing how well that selected combination of breeds matched to your dog’s data. The pedigree withthe overall best score is the one which is shown on the ancestry chart. Only breeds that reached our set confidencethreshold for reporting are reported in the ancestry chart.
