Make your mark: printmaking project
The purpose of developing the print
project ‘#Make Your Mark’ was to
engage our Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander students in
Contemporary Arts practice enabling
them to find their Voice, Treaty and
Truth in line with the NAIDOC theme
for 2019.
Students were engaged for two days
with their project development,
carving and printing to create a visual
representation of their culture with
the aim of sharing knowledge and
truth with the Eagle Vale High School
community.
We are deeply proud of the many
students who were willing to give
their time to share their voices,
display leadership and work
collectively to produce their visual.
and unique story.
Some statements from students who participated in the
‘#Make Your Mark’ project:
“I was invited to participate in a project called ‘#Make Your Mark’ which
helped me to express my culture and helped me to understand what
Aboriginal Art is all about. This project has changed my perspective on
Aboriginal Art and printing.” - Peter F.
“I was happily invited to the ‘#Make Your Mark’ print project to create a
visual representation of my culture. I am a proud Aboriginal man and I
wanted to create something with meaning from my Mob.” - Mitchell D.
“I was invited to have an opportunity to participate in this program called
‘#Make Your Mark.’ This program taught us to share our ideas as a group
and taught us not to be afraid to be yourself. This program taught us how
to be proud of who we are.” - Kaitlyn K.

As part of their Art course, students of Strength learnt about famous artworks. They recreated 5 famous artworks: The Scream, Girl with Pearl Earrings, Mona Lisa, American Gothic and The Last Supper. Students referred to each artwork, dressed up in similar costumes, studied and copied expressions/poses and took photographs. During this process the students discussed and analysed the expressions and the characters in the artwork. They experimented and learnt to make their own version of the famous artwork too.

2020 School Captains
The Student Representative Council (SRC) is made up of elected members of each year group plus the
captains and vice captains of the school. Throughout the year, the Student Representative Council
meets regularly to plan fundraising activities, school socials and other activities as they arise. They also
provide input into decision making at the school.
Last term we held our elections for our High School Captains. I am privileged to announce Cyprus
McFarland and Colin Price as our High School Captains and Taylor Gibson and Abi Tavae as our High
School Vice Captains. I have every confidence in their abilities to lead the student body fantastically
throughout 2020. Congratulations!
Australian Reading Hour

annual campaign where all Australians are encouraged to pick up
a book and read for one hour. To celebrate this initiative,

Staff and students embraced Book Week 2019 by dressing as their favourite book character. The theme
was “Reading is my secret power” and some students used this concept to create their own characters.
Reading gives all of us secret powers: the power to let us walk in the shoes of others through their stories;
the power to let us experience other worlds; the power to improve our vocabulary and imagination…what
secret power have you gained through reading?

‘Breaking through Barriers’ with fitness is
a program created by Father O’Riley’s
Youth Off the Streets and ran in
conjunction with the Macquarie Fields
Area Command Police. This program is
facilitated by former middleweight boxing
champion Daniel Geale and focuses on
creating an environment in which
Aboriginal youth can train, talk to
community members and have a healthy
breakfast. This program allows students to
learn about culture, the benefits of a
healthy lifestyle and the importance of
education. The student’s commitment to
sustaining a healthy lifestyle – body and
mind, before school once a week is
inspirational.

L.I.F.E
L.I.F.E is an innovate project implemented by Christ Mission Possible. It provides support, through mentoring, to young people at risk, exposing them to other experiences of life and increasing their opportunities. It brings together community groups and agencies to work together for the benefit of young people in the local area. Research indicates young people who leave school prior to completing Year 12 are twice as likely to become unemployed by the age of 24 (Australia’s Young Adults: The Deepening Divide). L.I.F.E offers young people who are at risk of leaving formal education/ training early, the opportunity to plan for their future careers and find a positive way into further training or the workforce. The program is a 12 month program involving students across a range of years. The idea is to upskill and motivate selected students, to not only improve their academic and post school successes, but for the students to transfer this willingness to learn and future goals to the rest of the school community. The program involves different 5 different phases:
• Up’n’GO (Motivation)
• Self-Identity
• Mentoring and Volunteering
• ‘Lyrical Stories’ (Community engagement project)
• Employability skills and future endeavours The program is in its third week and students have shown a tremendous amount of commitment and motivation towards the project. The Wellbeing Team will continue to keep staff and the community updated with the progress of the L.I.F.E program.
