Thank you to all who donated toward our Easter Flowers.
Donations were made in memory of the following:
Create a
Mary Garden Mary gardens are
special spaces at
your home that usually
have a statue, or
other image of the
Blessed Virgin Mary,
and flowers or herbs
beautifully surrounding
her. In the Middle
Ages the gardens and flowers were used
to tell the story of the life of Mary in the
same way that stained glass windows inside
churches often tell the stories from the
Bible or life of the saints. Size of the garden
does not matter. It can be in the yard of
a home or even in a large garden pot on
your patio or deck. Designing your garden
and choosing flowers can be a fun project
for your family and provide you with a
beautiful space for prayer and meditation.
Here are some flowers and their meanings
that are sometimes chosen for Mary gardens.
Many more choices are available. You
can also use decorative stones to create
a Rosary near or around your garden. If
you have a Mary garden we would love
for you to share a picture of your garden
with us.
ROSE: The Rose symbolizes Mary as
Queen of Heaven. White rose is her
purity, red rose is her sorrow and the
blood of Christ, yellow rose is her glory.
MARIGOLD: Early Christians placed
them, instead of coins, at the foot of
Mary’s statue.
LILY OF THE VALLEY: Also called “our
Lady’s tears”. Her fragrant tears that
fell at the foot of Jesus’ cross.
LAVENDER: Mary’s purity, cleanliness
and virtue.
ROSEMARY: This plant is believed to
be the one upon which Mary hung
the linens of the Holy Child.
COLUMBINE: Often called Our Lady’s
Slipper. Legend says that this flower
sprang from the earth where Mary’s
feet stepped when she was on her way
to visit Elizabeth.
OXEYE DAISY: The flower that helped
the Magi find the Christ child.
STRAWBERRY: The Fruitful Virgin.
