CONGRATULATIONS TO B’NAI ISRAEL’SCONFIRMATION CLASS OF 2018!by Sarah H. Egelman

On Sunday, May 20, four Congregation B’nai Israel students celebrated their Confir-mation as part of the synagogue's Shavuot service.

Beck Franklin, Meira Altman, Iliana Levenson, and Mark Koshkin began their Jew-ish education together as kindergartners at Solomon Schechter Day School and now, as 10th graders, have just finished B’nai Israel's three year Confirmation program. All four observed their B'nai Mitzvah here as well.

In the past three years these students have learned about other religions (including taking field trips to other houses of worship), practiced liturgy and led services, partici-pated in several social justice and community projects, conducted three fundraisers for the Religious School, explored issues of Jewish ethics, studied Jewish history, debated current events with relevance to Jews and Judaism, learned about Israel and practiced conversational Hebrew, listened to guest teachers and worked with local artists, and so much more. They have often helped in the Sunday morning tefillah services, assisted teachers with projects in their classrooms and tutored younger students in Hebrew liturgy. They have brought both humor and critical questioning to their studies and they have demonstrated a com-mitment to the Jewish community as they have grown into their Jewish identities.

In preparing for their Confirmation ceremony, Beck, Meira, Iliana and Mark thought about how their journey of Jewish education has connections to the story told at Shavuot of the giving of the Torah as well as the theme of harvest. These ideas informed the remarks they gave on the bimah during the Shavuot service. During the final weeks of

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEby Elynn Finston

By now you’ve received your invitation to attend the first in a series of Congregational forums, scheduled for either Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at 7:00 pm or Sunday, June 24th at 10 am. The topic is “USCJ – Do We Stay or Do We Go?”

Our congregation has very split views on this issue, and we are not alone.

Here are some of the benefits of USCJ membership:• Throughthewebsiteandlist-serves,weareconnectedtothenational

and international communities of Conservative congregations, allow-ing us to track trends in Conservative Judaism, seek advice from other congregations, and share our own experiences.

• WecanhireRabbis fromtheRabbinicalAssembly(the“RA”),andCantors from the Cantors Assembly (“CA”).

sponsored by USCJ.Here are some of the downsides of USCJ membership:

•USCJmembershipdues isassessedat the rateof5.33%ofour totalanticipated synagogue dues revenue. The USCJ has estimated this year’s assessment to be approximately $4320. This rate has not yet been negotiated or finalized.

•TheRAandCAdictatewhichcandidateswearepermittedtointerviewand hire, based on our size, budget and location. But their interview period is limited to the three months of December – January, and new hires don’t begin until July. This could delay our Rabbinic search by a year or more.

•Ourlocationmakesitdifficulttoreceivehands-onservicesfromUSCJstaff.Attendanceatconventionsiscostlyandtravelisoftendifficult,as the conventions tend to take place in large cities on the East or West coasts.

The preliminary results of our congregational survey indicate overwhelmingly that we want to remain a Conservative congregation. Do we need to maintain membership in the USCJ in order to do so, or are there other alternatives? What would we give up, and what might we gain?

Please come on June 19 or June 24 to share your thoughts on these issues. Meanwhile, please support our community and help it to remain strong. I encourage you to support our programs, attend our fundraisers, come to Shab-batandYomTovservices.Reachouttoacongregantyouhaven’tseeninawhile and reconnect. Invite him or her to join you at a synagogue function. Invite a Jewish friend from outside the congregation to join you at a program at B’nai. Whether we remain within the USCJ or not, it is up to us to make our congregation what we want it to be.

CAMP SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEEAWARDS ANNOUNCED

The B’nai Israel Camp Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce that Meira Altman, Finley Altman, Ephram Goldstein, and Isaac Gold-stein have all been awarded funds to help with their Jewish summer camp experiences.

We encourage our congregation to contribute to our camp scholarship funds throughout the year so that we can help ensure each child has the opportunity to attend a Jewish summer camp at least once.

FROM OUR MAILBOX...

My heart is filled with eternal gratitude to all my friends at Congregation B’nai Israel and to Rabbi Flicker who always seems to be where and when I most need him.

G-d did hear your prayers on my behalf and I am happy to say I am now home in my own house after five months in two states. I am now learning about the bleak times and how hard my children and friends prayed. And with the aid of many doctors, “I made it”.

May I take another few moments to say thank you to G-d for having in my life Dr. Mi-chael Klein who consulted with many specialists and guided me through this maze. He stayed with me and my son in the hospital till after midnight to see a doctor who never did show up. He also kept my children advised on how to work through a myriad of problems.

Thank you to my very special friends, Anne Bowers, Diane Reuler, Marjorie Kirkel, Elaine Weisman, Millie Chapin, Marilyn Lafer, Bon-nie Ivener, Anita Klawsky and Acy Debois. They cooked food and stayed with me all night to make sure I would eat and never be left alone. Now they are driving me around to many loca-tions when I need to follow up with doctors and wherever else I need to be.

Thank you to Betty Osoff-Hannigan who helped me get into my office and wade through mountains of mail, and for that delicious pickled herring in cream sauce.

Thank you to Beth Stewart who made it possible for me to attend a Sparks program and also the special yearly meeting. Beth, I loved the Matzos Brai. Thank you to Judy Pitkofsky for the chopped liver – hmmm so good! Ladies, how kind of you to bring Passover to me at a time when I needed it so badly.

G-d bless all of you! Thank you Congregation B’nai Israel for

all your prayers, cards and well wishes. I am overwhelmed with gratitude.

Hugs,Lyn Sinowitz

the school year, the four worked on the annual Confirmation class "legacy" art project. They have designed an art piece that reflects their time together at Congregation B’nai Israel and in other shared arenas in their lives. It includes symbols that they find important and a collage of images. One important theme in the piece is the idea of beginnings, an idea that seemed obvi-ous to them but was also inspired by combining letters of their Hebrew names. One section of the piece, which will be finished over the sum-mer and then displayed, says, "In the end, you always go back to the people who were there in the beginning."

CONFIRMATION NEWS

By the time this edition of The Shofar is in your hands, Religious School will have ended for the year. Congratulations to our Confirmation gradu-ates – Iliana Levenson, Mark Koshkin, Beck Franklin, and Meira Altman. These young people demonstrate the qualities of menshlikeit and dedication to Jewish values that we hope for all of our students. Kol haKavod!

As the year winds down, the teaching staff and I are already looking toward next year. We are working on the school calendar – an interesting challenge because so many holidays fill the weekends in September – and on curricular goals for next year. By the time we send out the school registra-tion packet in July, I plan to have the following items set for each class so that parents and students have an idea of what to look forward to next year:

•Ayear-longfocusforstudy(e.g.,Holocaust,lifecycles,mitzvot,Israel).•Ahiddurmitzvahproject(e.g.,mezuzah,matzohcover,Torahyad).•Aclassmitzvahprojectthattiesintotheclassthemefortheyear.•Aclassevent(e.g.,TuB’Shevatseder,modelPassoverseder,Havdalah

service) where the students have an opportunity to share what they are learning with their families and community.

I hope to set up a series of parent or family workshops to complement what our students are learning, as well as an adult Hebrew class that would be held during religious school hours. Junior Congregation will continue, and we are planning to go back to the previous pattern of having each class individually lead a Friday night or Shabbat morning service over the course of the year.

We are also looking for a primary teacher for the Hey (7th grade) class. This is a very challenging year as most of the students will celebrate becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah during the year. I am working on a plan where the primary teacher will have time to work with these students both individu-ally and in a group, rather than spending the entire school time with the whole class. If you are familiar with Shabbat liturgy and enjoy working with creative and inquiring young people, or if you know someone who would enjoy this opportunity, please contact me by email: [email protected] or phone: 553-0736.

PRESCHOOL NEWSby Samantha Newcomb, MA, Director

We are off to a wonderful summer! Our first summer camp session titled “Trek on a Jungle Safari” began on June 4th. Each week of summer we are focusing on exploring jungle life and working on projects highlighting some of their interesting facts. Each week the students engage in special art projects, play, and other activities that may include a cooking project.

Our students have begun planting a garden. They will water and care for their plants and enjoy seeing the fruits of their labor grow every day. Water days are a delight in the hot summer months. The students are able to explore and use their imagination to enhance their skills through play with water tables, bubbles, small pools and sprinklers. As a special event the Highland Reader’s Theater, a talented group of senior performers will come this month to perform and entertain our students. We are excited to explore.

We invite you to stop by our preschool and say “hello”. If you have some time and would like to volunteer, share a talent or read a story, we would welcome you. We encourage you to come and share traditions and teachings.

This is my last article for The Shofar as Sisterhood president. On Sunday, June 10, there will be a Sisterhood election for the new board followed by anIceCreamSocial.Thegavelwillbepassedofficiallytotheverycapablehands of Melissa Drolet on July 1.

It’s been a wonderful and interesting two years. I thank the members of the Sisterhood board, the Congregation B’nai Israel board, the Sisterhood members, and the Congregation members for the tremendous support they have given me during my time as president. None of what was accomplished could have been done without everyone involved. Together, we accomplished so much, giving back to the synagogue wherever we could.

In April, we collected bras, panties, and feminine products for the home-less; and we made blankets for the Women’s Coalition. For over two hours, twenty-three of us ate, worked, talked, and laughed. A wonderful group of women attended! It’s what Sisterhood is really all about, and I am looking forward to the future of the Sisterhood and Congregation B’nai Israel. We have so much to do in the next couple of years. We will be selecting a new rabbi, celebrating our 100-year anniversary, and much more.

The Sisterhood, under the direction of Melissa and the new board, will continue to provide quality programs and synagogue support. Youwillstill be seeing me though; I’m not disappearing. In April, the Congrega-tion elected me as a trustee on the synagogue board, and I will remain as a trustee on the Sisterhood Board. I am honored to have been able to be the Sisterhood president these last two years, and I hope to continue to serve and make decisions which are in the best interest of the synagogue and its congregation.

Thank you again and Shalom.

Torah Fund Pin for 5778 (2017-2018)

Mah tovu, which means “how good!”, is a phrase that originates in the Torah, in Numbers 24:5. Quoted in our prayer book, it forms the basis of the opening prayer that is sung when we enter the synagogue.

ThefullphraseisMahtovuohalechaYaakov, mishk’notechaYisrael, “How goodly are yourtents, O Jacob, your dwellings, O Israel!” It is a spontaneous exclamation of joy and appreciation, said when gazing at the nation of Israel, dwelling in peace and mutual respect. As we celebrate the beginning of the 100th year of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism and the end of the 75th year of the Torah Fund Campaign, we count our many blessings as individuals within the community of Israel. We are blessed in our synagogues with depth of learning, prayer, and acts of kindness that bind us together; with com-munal leaders who are thoughtful and learned; with children and grandchildren who make us smile; and with the love of family and friends, especially our Women’s League sisters, who are such a strong support to us. How good are all these blessings in our lives!

The pin, features the number 100 in raised letters and encased in a silver frame, is a treasured keepsake of the Women’s League centennial celebration to wear with pride!

Youare invited toparticipate inConservativeJudaism through giving to the Torah Fund cam-paign of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. Think of us the next time you wish to make a dona-tion for a special occasion or memorial.

CONSERVATIVE SYNAGOGUES PASS RESOLUTION ALLOWING NON-JEWS AS MEMBERS

March 5, 2017 4:05pm

(JTA: Jewish Telegraphic Agency) — The umbrella body for Conserva-

tive synagogues approved a resolution to allow individual congregations

to decide whether to grant membership to non-Jews.

The resolution was passed on March 1 during a special meeting of

the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism General Assembly held

over the internet with electronic voting. The measure passed over-

whelmingly by a vote of 94 to 8 with one abstention. According to a

statement from the USCJ, 15 members did not vote.

“USCJ supports every affiliated kehillah in developing its own cri-

teria for membership,” the resolution reads, using a Hebrew word for

congregation.

“USCJ, as a valued and trusted partner, is committed to assisting

welcoming, vibrant, and caring Jewish communities to fully engage the

spiritual gifts of all community members. We celebrate the diversity

among and within our kehillot and encourage the engagement of all

those who seek a spiritual and communal home in an authentic and

dynamic Jewish setting. We call on all of our kehillot to open their doors

wide to all who want to enter.”

The proposed resolution grew out of a commission set up last March

to explore ways to engage intermarried couples.

The Conservative movement prohibits its rabbis from marrying or

attending the wedding ceremonies of interfaith couples, though some

of its synagogues celebrate intermarriages before they occur and

welcome the couples afterward. In recent years, several Conservative

rabbis have protested the intermarriage prohibition.

The change was endorsed by the major Conservative institutions in

the United States, including the Rabbinical Assembly, the Jewish Theo-

logical Seminary and the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies.

THIS WEEK @ B’NAI ISRAEL

This Week @ B’nai Israel, our weekly congregational email, is sent out every Thursday at 2:00 pm for the upcoming week.

Get your news or event on the Congregation B’nai Israel website and in This Week @ B’nai Israel by sending your ready-to-go email to [email protected] by 4:00 pm Tuesday afternoons.

General rules of thumb are: if you send it to the Shofar, send it to the Webmaster! If you

send it to the Link, send it to the Webmaster!

Do you like to sing in the shower? Or while driving in your car? The Congregation B’nai Israel choir is always looking for additional singers.

Don’t read Hebrew? No problem - our music is in phonetic transliteration. Don’t read music? Also no problem! We will teach you!

Rehearsals are held on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. at Con-gregation B’nai Israel. If you would like to sing with the choir, call Diane Chodorow or Judy Sherman.

PHONE ETIQUETTE REMINDER

Please don’t forget to turn off your cell phones and beepers when you are in the synagogue or sanctuary during Shabbat and other holiday services.
