Principal’s Message What a great start our new uniform shop has had so far. Allow me to extend my thanks to Mr Sinclair and his volunteers for a job well done. To everyone who has visited the uniform shop over the first few days, the patience and understanding you have shown so far as we’ve started to introduce the new uniform has been excellent. Please remember that in keeping with the department’s uniform policy that families have plenty of time to change over to the new uniform - two years in all. Students will not be expected to be decked out completely in the new uniform until the start of Term 2, 2016. A BIG thank you to all the fabulous staff from Woolworths Cardiff who came into our school on Friday for Food Revolution Day and promoted healthy eating. The wraps, the vegetables, the fruit, the water, the gloves and hair- nets (which were quite popular) were all donated by the store. The team members who visited us were very friendly and enjoyed interacting with our students. I spent most of my time with 1/2M and judging by the student’s responses, they really enjoyed making and eating healthy wraps. Perhaps there are mums and dads out there who might be a little more confident this week to pack their children a healthy wrap for lunch. Based on what I saw – they will eat them. For those of you who know me well – the answer is yes, I did have a wrap with the ‘works’ and I ate every mouthful. Principal’s Message

What a great start our new uniform shop has had so far. The wraps, the vegetables, the fruit, the water, the gloves and hair-nets (which were quite popular) were all donated by the store. Uniform Update

As stated above, there’s been a relatively smooth commencement to new uniform sales. The demand for Polo

shirts in some sizes has been greater than what parents initially indicated they would need (eg size 4). This has

resulted in some items selling out. Another order has been placed and there is a turnaround time of 2 weeks.

The hats have arrived and are now on sale. Please note: that the washing instructions recommend - washing

garments separately on the first occasion. The uniform shop will be open this week as follows:

Tree Maintenance If you have been in to school in the past two days, you may have noticed that a number of areas of our school have been fenced off. This is due to the fact that we have recently had all our trees assessed by a qualified arborist and a number of them were identified as requiring immediate pruning or in some cases removal altogether. This work will be conducted very soon, and whilst it may be a little inconvenient – the safety of our staff, students and visitors comes first; hence the fences. If you would normally use the Third Street entrance to access our grounds, we’d ask that you use the main gate on Lake Avenue until the remedial tree works are completed. New School App For over a year now, we have been encouraging parents and friends of our school to install the Cardiff South school app on your smartphones. This is a great way to keep up to date with school events and to have at your fingertips resources like canteen and uniform shop pricelists, term calendars, push notifications about school events, directions to school events, links to permission notes and an easy way to submit absence notes. Very soon, we will be introducing a new and improved app. The new app will be easier to navigate, will sync with our school website and will have more features than we are able to offer on our current app. Please keep an eye on the newsletter over the next few weeks for information about when our new app goes live.

On Friday, we participated in Food Revolution Day and people from Woolworths came to our school to help us eat healthy food. They gave us a chance to make a wrap that covered the food triangle. In our wraps we added on cheese, lettuce, ham, mayonnaise etc. Before we made wraps some children got the chance to grate carrots and help put out the food in sequence. Everyone received a pair of disposable gloves, some people also got to wear a trendy hat that the people in the deli wear. We also tasted delicious juicy fruit. We were allowed to choose from an option of an apple, mandarin or a banana and a bottle of water to wash it down with. If you want your kids to eat healthy foods go onto woolworths.com.au to print out a food triangle. We would like to thank Woolworths for helping us complete the food triangle and Mr Holland for organising this amazing day. THANK YOU WOOLWORTHS!!! By Annalise A and Tiarne S 5C

Walk Safely to School Day Walk Safely to School Day is an annual, national event when all Primary School children are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a Community Event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment. There are a couple of ways you can get involved: if you live within walking distance of our school; you could arrange to walk with your children to school; you could have your children meet with their friends at a designated spot to then walk to school together; or if you live further away you could park 10 mins from school and then walk the rest of the way. As you do so, use the opportunity to reinforce safe pedestrian practices like crossing at safe spots and looking both ways. There’s plenty of time, so come on Cardiff South let’s make a plan and walk to school this Friday! Entertainment Books Even though the traditional Entertainment Books have sold out, there is an electronic version for sale, please go www.entertainmentbook.com.au . They are still $60 and $12 still goes to the school and you will still receive all

the same offers as the regular book, it’s just now on your phone.

Old Uniforms Please don’t be in a rush to throw away your old school uniforms, the P&C and members of our school community are currently looking into opportunities where they may be of use to charitable organisations abroad. We will keep you informed as this idea develops. Reforms to P&C Federation The NSW Parliament has introduced legislation to reform the NSW Federation of Parent and Citizens Associations, which has suspended operation pending Supreme Court action. While these reforms will not affect the day-to-day operation of individual school P&Cs, they will introduce a new executive structure which will ensure the Federation operates as a modern and representative body on behalf of school P&C Associations. Each school’s P&C Association will be asked to vote for councillors and delegates who will represent their electorate at the Federation’s Annual General Meeting and councillors who will serve on the Federation’s Board of Management. More information will be available on the Department’s website at http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/gotoschool/a-z/involvement.php.

Student Banking We just wanted to highlight the procedures for students who bank regularly at school. Banking day is Friday. Parents are asked to complete a deposit slip in their child’s bank book and safely enclose the money. The bank books are collected by the class teacher and sent to the office with the class roll. They are then processed at school by a parent volunteer Mrs Tarrant on Friday morning in the office area. The bank books will be returned to students on the same day. If your child does not currently utilise school banking, you just need to open a savings account at your nearest Commonwealth Bank and let them know that your child will be banking at Cardiff South PS and they will guide you through the set-up process.
