Julio Jimenez had considered whether he had a vocation to the priesthood in his native Mexico, but the call became stronger when he arrived in Chicago in 2008, he said. “Even though my discernment did not start there, it became clearer to me that God was calling me to serve in this archdiocese. NOTES FROM FATHER BOB… TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 2013

Our Old Testament and our gospel reading both seem to be about death, but also about life. Both Elias and Jesus have raised someone from the dead; both have brought life, but with a difference. The good widow, who takes in Elias, loses her son; she thinks that this man of God is somehow punishing her for her sins. However, Elias takes her son and in the privacy of his room, prays to God to restore the boy’s life breath, and God does it. It is interesting that Elias first seems to reproach God, even while he trusts God: “O Lord my God, will you even afflict the widow with whom I am staying by killing her son?” Regardless, Elias trusts and is bold enough to ask for the boy’s life.

In our gospel reading, Jesus just happens to meet a funeral procession and is moved with pity for the widow whose son has died. “Young man, I tell you, arise!” Then Jesus returns the young man to his mother. No one says a word to Jesus about this young man or about his mother, but Jesus knows the mother’s grief. With compassion and mercy for the mother, he raises the boy to life. The other --and more important difference between Elias and Jesus-- is that Jesus raised the young man through his own power; the people rightfully say that “God has visited his people.”

This miracle of Jesus is amazing, but in one sense, it is nothing compared to what he is going to do. This miracle is only a sign. We might even go so far as to say it is only a momentary victory. The true victory will actually come when Jesus himself is raised from the dead. His resurrection will bring a new and totally glorious life. It doesn’t stop with Jesus, because we all will one day share in that glorious new life. That might be hard to imagine now, when we feel we are in the fullness of life regardless of our age, but it is true. God has truly visited his people by sending his Son, Jesus Christ, who brought us salvation.

So what do we do about this today? What is Jesus asking of us today? I believe Jesus is asking us to rise up from whatever is holding us down. It might be anger which we aren’t ready to let go of right now. It might be greed that prevents us from helping our brothers and sisters, our neighbors, the needy around us. It might be our desire for position or praise that makes us willing to compromise our values to achieve it. It might be just plain selfishness which makes us ignore everyone else and even treat them badly. It might be alcohol or drugs or some other dependency that keeps us from being free, or causes us to act in ways we wouldn’t want Jesus to know if we stood before him now. So what is Jesus asking of us today? Could Jesus be asking us to change?

Let us look at Paul for a moment. When he was writing to the Galatians, he was under attack. The Galatians were in danger of falling into legalism, thinking the law was more important than the saving grace of Jesus Christ. As a result, Paul rather strongly tells them his own story; what he is telling them about Jesus’ saving grace isn’t something he got from the other disciples, but directly through a revelation of Jesus Christ. This has something to say to us, too. It can give us hope. If a persecutor of Christians like Paul can be saved, so can we. Further, if we accept the gifts God offers us, those gifts will bear fruit in us, just as they did in Paul.

God called Paul, who was a persecutor, and Paul answered. Today it is our turn. God is saying to us today, through His Son, Jesus Christ: “Young man, young woman, older man, older woman, children, I tell you, arise!” What is he asking of us? Are we ready and willing to answer?

HOPE AND LIFE Today’s readings tell the story of two widows. The first reading relates the plight of the widow with whom the prophet Elijah stayed; the Gospel tells about the widow of Nain. In each story, the widow’s only son had died. For people who lived in those cultures, the son was the only support of a widow, and the carrying on of the family name by the son was equal to immortality. A widow whose only son has died could lose all hope. Elijah and Jesus are the restorers of hope; they bring the sons back to life. Saint Paul was metaphorically raised from the dead when he experienced the conversion and call from God that he describes in today’s second reading. What are Christians called to do today? We may not be able to raise the dead, but perhaps we can rekindle hope for a single parent. We may not be able to convert a persecutor like Paul, but if we speak the gospel openly and gently with our lives, we might touch a life with the Good News. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

This collection is solely for the retired priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago. The retired priests of the Archdiocese receive no funds from the Religious Retirement Collection taken up in December. Those funds go for religious nuns and brothers and religious order priests. There are 207 Retired Archdiocesan Priests. They represent more than one quarter of all the priests serving in the Archdiocese. There are currently 108 priests over the age of eighty. Of these 108 priests, 18 are over age ninety and two are over 100. Collectively our retirees represent over 11,000 years of service to the Archdiocese. Normal retirement age is 70 for Chicago priests, 50 retired priests still live in a rectory and assist the parish on a regular basis. Close to 120 retired priests celebrate Sunday Mass weekly; perform marriages and baptisms; and visit the sick in hospitals. Without these dedicated men, many parishes would not be able to offer the full range of Masses and sacraments that is currently offered. There are two independent living residences for retired priests that are subsidized by the Archdiocese. There is space for 28 retired priests to enjoy communal living with their brother priests in retirement. 23 rooms are currently being used. 30 priests received or are currently receiving nursing home assistance or have full-time aides coming to their home or rectory in the last year. PRMAA will spend more than $1,700,000 providing this care. The priests’ pension fund was adversely affected by the economic downturn. Millions of dollars will be needed in the coming years to bring it to appropriate funding levels. The Archdiocese of Chicago is committed to caring for our retired priests but we need your assistance. Please help and many, many thanks.

Life would seem almost perfect for them, except for one thing, they have been blinded by Leber’s Congenital Arnaurosis (LCA), an inherited degenerative disease characterized by severe loss of vision at birth. 50 generous and compassionate Chicagoland professional organizers, led by Patty Wolf of La Grange, have jumped aboard to organize 25 homes to raise $25,000 for retinal research specifically to help Patrick and Mirielle. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the

Foundation for retinal research. For $1,000, participating homeowners receive a package of organizing services to fit their needs, including 7 hours of home organization provided by 2 professional organizers (total of 14 man hours); and as needed, paper shredding junk hauling, and ebay selling. Participants will be entered into a raffle featuring interior design services computer services and more.

Faith is Love in Action by Thomas Smith

You do right when you offer faith to God; you do right when you offer works. But if you separate the two, then you do wrong. For faith without works is dead; and lack of charity in action murders faith, just as Cain murdered Abel, so that God cannot respect your offering.—St. Bernard Paul reminds us that “faith works through love” (Galatians 5:6), and even great works done for God (whether it’s miracles or martyrdom), have no value apart from love (1 Cor 13:3). God, the supreme object of our faith, is love, and we show our faith in our loving acts. One of the first things God convicted me of when I came to faith in Christ was the hatred that I had harbored for my stepfather. He was an abusive alcoholic, and I felt my loathing was justified because of the way he treated my family. As I grew in Christ, it became crystal clear to me that my lack of love was inconsistent with my faith and, in fact, threatening it. I remember saying to God, “I can’t love my stepdad” and hearing the Lord say in response, “I know, but I can love him through you.” My prayer became, “God, change my heart to beat in unison with your Sacred Heart.” It was an act of faith to believe his love could heal my broken, dark heart. It didn’t happen overnight, but I was able to forgive my stepdad and love him in concrete ways. After he was diagnosed with emphysema, I spent his last days caring for him, literally loving him to death. Through this experience, not only was my heart healed and enlarged, but my faith in God’s power and love increased exponentially. Action Step: What is one tangible way you can exercise your faith in an expression of love, mercy, or forgiveness this week?

Many times our “passion” to excel is the expense of someone else. Maybe we need to focus on a little less passion for our individual concerns and a lot more compassion for others.

St. Cletus Catholic Parish of the Archdiocese of Chicago is a Christian community of believers and followers of Christ Jesus. Parents must be registered parishioners and attend the Baptism Preparation class. Please make arrangements by calling the Rectory office (708-352-6209). WEDDINGS Dates and times are reserved for registered parishioners. Initial arrangements must be completed five months in advance of the wedding date. HOME/HOSPITAL VISITATION AND COMMUNION CALLS Please contact the Ministry of Care office (708-215-5407). EUCHARISTIC ADORATION AND BENEDICTION Adoration begins following the 8:00am Mass and continues during the day until 6:15pm the first Tuesday of the month. The Chaplet of Divine Mercy is prayed at 6:15pm followed by Benediction. Hispanic Adoration continues from 7:00pm until 8:00pm. CONFESSIONS Confessions every Saturday of the month: 4:15-4:45pm.
