MeSSAGe FROM THe PReSIDeNTby Tina Nieves

Lately, I have been receiving a lot of positive feedback on the various areas of the club and I have decided that it is best to share them with you, our membership. I can’t tell you how many people have com-mented on the improved menu (especially wine and beer) offerings and the quality of the dishes coming from our kitchen. This is thanks in part to the excellent work of our Food and Beverage Committee. How-ever, Gonzalo, our Interim Executive Chef is deserving of much of the credit as well. Upon Chef John’s departure, he made a point to credit Gonzalo with many of the more creative dishes we have seen over the last two years. We are now in the process of searching for our new Executive Chef and in the interim, I would like to acknowledge the excellent job that Gonzalo is doing turning out mouth watering dishes and maintaining the high quality of cuisine which we have come to expect at the Club.

Another area that has been receiving constant commendations is our catering and banquet operations. Sandy and her staff are doing an out-standing job shaking the trees to bring in a steady flow of events. But we are also seeing now, more than ever, our banquet business getting good buzz and growing from word of mouth. Just a week or so ago, one of the brides posted this of her wedding at the Club on Yelp: “The catering department, Kristy and Sandy were both incredibly help-ful, really helped me with all the stresses and walked us through the whole process with class and with a lot of fun! The room is beautiful with an even better view, the large window oversees the grounds and the mountains to the left, it’s absolutely beautiful. The food that was served was absolutely delicious as well…. The staff was very profes-sional and served everyone quickly and efficiently. This was a very positive wedding experience, and having my wedding reception there at the club definitely enhanced our experience. I would definitely recommend them to anyone who wants a great, classy, and beautiful wedding/wedding reception.”

Great job ladies! We have also just concluded our first session of YAP with much fan fare. The children put on a funny and entertaining tal-ent show capping weeks of fun and games and field trips. And I have personally received a lot of positive feedback from the success of that program as well. Thank you April and Director Nicole!

It is wonderful when we hear more than complaints and grumblings and I definitely wanted to share with you some of the good things I am hearing of the work being done by our staff at the Club.

Now for a brief construction update. As you all now know, we have a completed elevator and we are very close to completing the rest-room as well. The marble counters have been installed this week, the cove lighting is in, doors framed and the tile work is nearly done. So a fully functioning ladies lounge is in the very near future. We have also begun the process of getting bids for the fitness center, and we are gearing up for the November start date. And not to be forgotten, the sewer project is well underway. That’s all I have for now. I am off for a short vacation and I hope all of you are enjoying the last vestiges of summer. Aloha!

Attention Members:

ATCC is officially placing the call for new Board members, with an effective term date of November, 2012 thru October, 2015. A board nomination process overview and application form is attached to this newsletter and also available on the Club’s website. If you are interest-ed, please complete these forms and submit via e-mail to the Board’s President, Tina Nieves at [email protected] or to myself at [email protected], or by dropping off your application with the Club’s receptionist, labeled Board of Governor’s Nominating Commit-tee.

The Club is looking for Board members with identified expertise in the following areas, however, all interested members are encouraged to apply, regardless of expertise:• Legal• Construction• Finance• Insurance• Marketing• Hospitality• Strategic Planning• Human ResourcesApplications should be received on or before September 1, 2012.

A number of members (at least those that read my newsletter article last month) have come up to me to share how much they enjoyed reading, and were sometimes shocked by, some of the behaviors exhibited by our members (or nannies) this summer. I thought I might share a few additional incidents that took place earlier this summer and title this part of my article:

“What were they thinking? – ATCC bloopers and blunders”.

•An adult member ordered a pitcher of margaritas poolside, and sub-sequently allowed her 19 year old son and his friend to participate in the libations. We quickly put a stop to the activity, and a formal letter of reprimand was received by the member.•A nanny who works for a few of our members dropped off some other non-member kids in Kids Klub. When the staff realized that they were not there as the guest of a member, it was quickly addressed.•On a Friday night, a camper from YAP day camp was not picked up by the closing time of 6:00 pm, and with no message from, or par-ents on site, was checked into Kids Klub. Phone calls to both home and cell went unanswered. Where was this AWOL parent? Appar-ently, the babysitter was scheduled to pick up the child by 6:00 pm but something came up so she just left a voice message for the mother. Mom got the message around 8:00 pm and picked up the child. Too many blunders in this scenario to even comment.

I share these incidents not to embarrass any one particular member, but so that we can all learn from their mishaps.

FOOD & BeVeRAGe COMMITTee RePORTby Reid Leslie

DINING NeWS

We hope you are enjoying your summer and all that ATCC has to offer – tennis, swimming, good friends and great food. The recent Fourth of July party was a big success – great fireworks, delicious food, fun music and patriotic camaraderie. As you may have heard, Chef John Angelopulos has taken the Executive Chef position at Hillcrest Country Club, his former employer. We thank Chef John for his passion, enthusiasm and culinary contributions to ATCC. A search committee has been formed to select a new Executive Chef. The search committee is hoping to have the search wrapped up by the end of September.

In the interim, Chef Gonzalo is at the helm making sure you have a great dining experience. In fact, he has created a delicious summer comfort food addi-tion to the menu – try the new meatloaf sandwich

with roasted red peppers and garlic aioli. It is fan-tastic.

The Club staff has put together a series of specially priced packages for member hosted events. This is member only pricing and it is a great value. Remem-ber the Club for your next social or work event.

For those of you who are interested in the food and beverage operations of the Club, we will be look-ing for three new members for the Food and Bever-age Committee. The new term begins in November. If you are interested, please let Michael Smith or Tracy know.

Remember to think of the Club for lunch during the week. It is a great place for a nice relaxing meal.

MeSSAGe FROM THe SWIM COMMITTeeby Bob Meyer

Congratulations to the ATCC Dolphin Swim Team. For the 20th (yes 20th) year in a row, we are Crest League Champions. Finals were held at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center on a very hot July Saturday, but the swimmers remained cool and performed flawlessly. We may never get to see what Steve Bergen looks like bald.

A very special thanks goes out to Steve Bergen and his coaching staff. They all have a passion for swimming and they try to pass that along to our children. Somehow, they are able to make spend-ing an hour every day looking at a black line at the bottom of the pool into a fun event.

I also want to follow up on Craig Sloane’s com-ments from last month about the Jacuzzi as well as general pool rules. The rules for the Jacuzzi are that nobody under the age of six is allowed in the Jacuzzi at any time. Not just our rules, but also state law. Also, children under 14 must have an adult INSIDE the fenced area of the Jacuzzi while using the Jacuzzi at all times. As for the pool, if your child is unable to swim, a parent should be in the pool with that child. Alternatively, there are floatation devices available in the storage shed on the pool deck for those that might not be swim pro-ficient. Inflatable “floaties” are not a safe alterna-tive.

TeNNIS NeWSMeSSAGe FROM THe TeNNIS COMMITTeeby Megan Hamilton

Wow-is anyone else as surprised as I am that it is already August?! After a summer packed with tennis camps, clinics, drop-in tennis, fundraising tournaments and, most recently, the Hawaiian Tennis Mixer and the Bring-a-Ringer Member/Guest Tournament, the summer tennis activities have offered something for everyone at every age and ability level. After watching so many kids on the courts this summer, my three year old is very excited to start lessons next summer.

If anyone is looking for some inspiration to hit the courts in these dog days of summer, consider watching some of the Olympic tennis coverage. Who knows? Perhaps we have the next champion lurking amongst our younger members. Accord-ing to the United States Professional Tennis Asso-ciation, tennis has been proven to, among other things, improve one’s immune system, increase eye-hand coordination and flexibility, enhance bone strength and density and hone problem solv-ing skills. So, while most of us won’t be bringing home a gold medal, tennis truly is a lifetime sport. If you’ve never played before or haven’t played in years, give it a try!

Lastly, the Tennis Committee is in need of two dedicated souls to serve on the Tennis Commit-tee. If interested, please fill out the form available at the Front Desk or contact Fred or any of the current committee members for additional infor-mation.

Hope to see you on the courts!
