New Mexico May Allow Opioid Addicts to Use Medical Marijuana

LEADing a New Direction

The ineffective and perpetual cycle of arrest and incarceration among low-level drug

offenders who are not violent or dangerous has challenged law enforcement to

consider comprehensive, multi-faceted approaches for drug users. Growing

recognition among law enforcement that low-level drug offenders are better dealt

with outside of the criminal justice system has led to the growth of programs such

as Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD). This video features the work of

Santa Fe, New Mexico's LEAD program, which was the second department in the

country to implement LEAD. LEAD programs allow law enforcement to collaborate

with a multidisciplinary group of people who work in the criminal justice system and

social services to develop multi-faceted interventions that address the root causes

of chaotic drug use. Research shows that LEAD programs drastically reduce

and result in massive savings to law enforcement and the criminal justice system.

CEUs, Trainings and Job Opportunities

The health care environment is in the midst of incredible change, opportunity, and

urgency. Leaders in the mental health and substance use prevention and treatment

fields are reconsidering long-held paradigms, foundations of thought, systems, and

norms profoundly reshaping the way they work. They are asking questions such as

"How is my field now defined?" "Where will I fit in the future?" and "What skills and

expertise do I continue to offer and how do I contribute to change?"

In 2017, the College for Behavioral Health Leadership will hold three events to

address these issues. Two day-long dialogues in January and May will address

October, we will bring together lessons learned at those workshops and provide an

opportunity to step back and consider the changes we are facing.
