Thanks also to all who helped organize our annual FrancisFest which despite the heat was a great success last Sunday. Food trucks, kids in bouncy rooms, adults trying beer and wine and watching football – such a great day. Thanks again to our organizers.

This past Friday, October 4 was the Feast of Francis and this Sunday afternoon we have our annual Blessing of the Animals (dogs, cats, horses, pythons, anything!) in the labyrinth. Yesterday we welcomed our bishop for two confirmation liturgies and more than 150 of our teenagers received this sacrament. See page 3.Congratulations to them and blessings on your week!

Last weekend we had a gathering of our parish council and our parish staff for two full days of taking a close look at our Franciscan identity, our mission statement, the signs of the current times, and from all of that, a beginning to look at where God might be calling us as a parish. Francis of Assisi used to pray “who are you, and who am I?” and what I like about

that prayer is that it’s mutual, it’s Francis listening for the dynamic presence of God in his life and Francis being open himself to how he might respond. We can apply that to our parish: for the past three decades we have built and we have grown, and with all that, what now? Our parish council is prepared to begin to address these questions. Thanks to all who were part of the gathering.

Inspired by our patron St. Francis of Assisi who is the patron saint of ecology, our parish has been committed to issues of environ-mental concern and looking for ways to be better stewards of God’s creation. Next month, we are hosting an event in partnership with the Interfaith Creation Care of the Triangle entitled “Creation Care and the Bible.” This event will be Tuesday, October 22 from 7:00 to 9:00pm in Anthony Hall Founders Room. The featured speaker, Stephen Jurovics, Ph.D., author of the book Hospitable Planet: Faith, Action, And Climate Change, will speak about the deep con-nection between both Old and New Testament teachings and environmental justice in today’s world. He will offer ideas about how people of faith can become inspired to take action. After Dr. Jurovic’s presentation, there will be opportunities for working together in interfaith ac-tion teams to become agents of change in our community related to creation care and climate justice. Please RSVP for this event at http://bit.ly/bibleandcreationcare. For further information, contact Trevor Thompson, Director of Justice and Peace, 919-847-8205x270.

Each October, the US Bishops invite us to deepen our understanding, value, and engagement with building a culture that cherishes every human life. Rooted in the belief that all humans are made in the image and likeness of God, the Church has long proclaimed that human life is sacred and each person, therefore, is entitled to be treated with the greatest respect and dignity. At all stages of our lives, from the mo-ment of conception through the vulnerable years of childhood and old age to the very moment of natural death, we deserve the care and attention that belong to beings of inestimable worth. There is nothing a person can do or undergo to forfeit this lofty status - even those who are unborn, commit heinous crimes, acquire debilitating diseases, or find themselves separated from their homelands retain immense worth and dignity. This is the Church’s consistent voice when it expresses itself in the public sphere, within a culture that seems to too often devalue life’s inherent dignity and worth. We want to be sure that no matter who you are, you have an opportunity to live into the tran-scendent dignity and love that you deserve as a child of God.As we know well, throughout history and still today, human life, in all its transcendent giftedness, dignity and beauty is threatened in many ways, and because of this, we are often asked to advocate and take action on behalf of the poor and vulnerable. Whether this is when we sit with the single mom and unborn child in southeast Raleigh or the elderly woman at Abbotswood, whether we are writing and visiting men and women on Death Row or sitting holding someone’s hand at Wake Med, or whether we are walking with those in poverty or writing a

letter to our legislator about poor conditions in detention centers for immigrant children, the Church challenges us, saying “we cannot and must not sit on the sidelines in the fight for life, justice, and peace.”We are challenged not to just communicate our life-as-gift posture in words but in every aspect of our lives. Perhaps, you have a neighbor who is now unexpectedly expecting a child and have an opportunity to support her in this uncertain and complex time, one that often raises feelings of fear, shame, and doubt. Perhaps, you are exploring the possi-bility of adoption, wondering if your heart and home can welcome an adopted child with the same love as a biological child. Perhaps, you are accompanying your aging parents to con-sider how they wish their end of life care and medical decisions to be made that reflect their faith commitments. Perhaps, you feel called to join a ministry that reaches out to those who dignity is being threatened or who suffer through policies that do not support life, like our prison pen pal ministry, Gabriel Project’s work with single mothers, or Project Rachel’s post-abortion healing retreats. Perhaps, you are being called to pray, whether that’s in your own home or with others on the sidewalks in front of Central Prison or Planned Parenthood. In each of these ways, we can embody a spiri-tuality that communicates life is a gift.

This year’s Respect Life Month theme is “Christ, Our Hope: In Every Season of Life.” Hope is a powerful aspect of our faith in God, communicating our deep sense of trust that although we do not know the details of what awaits us or have all the answers to life’s mys-teries, we, nevertheless trust that God, who is Love incarnate, who knit us in our mother’s womb, will never abandon us. Be this hope for another today!

New! Evening Bible StudyThe Gospel of John

Written in a poetic and symbolic style, John's Gospel tells the life story of Jesus, the incarnate Word of God. It begins with his heavenly existence and his descent into the world. It follows Jesus through his public ministry of 'signs' that lead to his passion, death, resurrection, and ultimate ascent to the 'glory' of his heavenly Father. Many of Jesus' miracles and teachings in John appear in no other gospel and what is com-mon to John and any of the synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke) is always told in a distinctive fashion by John. John places a special emphasis on Jesus' commandment to 'Love one another as I love you' (John 15:12).This study has 15 sessions, incorporating an introductory ses-sion and 14 lessons. The last 3 sessions cover the Johannine letters, making it possible to adapt the study to 12 sessions by concentrating the study only on the Gospel of John. The Study Set includes a Study Guide by Little Rock Scripture Study Staff and the New Collegeville Bible Commentary, The Gospel According to John and the Johannine Letters, by Scott M. Lewis (Liturgical Press). The facilitator for this study is longtime St. Francis parishioner, bible study facilitator, and Master Catechist, Rich Zemonek.Wednesday evenings (7:00-8:30pm), 15 sessions: 10/23, 10/30, 11/6, 11/13, 11/20, 12/4, 12/11, 12/18, 1/8, 1/15, 1/22, 1/29, 2/5, 2/12, 2/19 (OFF 11/27, 12/25, 1/1)Cost: $27 per person – includes journal, study guide, and course materials. Kathleen Owen, Director of Parish Life

I recently went to daily Mass. There was a time when I tried to go weekly, but, well, you know….life happens. I was so surprised by the changes in folks since I last attended. I can only imagine the changes they saw in me, but were too kind to point out! There’s a certain insulation in going to Mass and sitting in the same place. You know the people around you. You may not know their names, but you know where they like to sit, you know if they come with a friend or a spouse. You know if they come early or scoot in just behind the priest. You know if they hold hands during the Our Father or if they keep their hands to themselves. You know if they are one of the ‘dine and dash’ folks who leaves right after receiving the Eucha-rist. You don’t know them, but you know quite a bit about them. But as I looked around, I noticed some new canes, I noticed that some moved a bit slower (I’m included in that group!), and some who used to bring spouses were there by themselves. What I should have done is made contact with them, a simple, “It’s good to see you!” That would have done the trick. It would have made them feel no-ticed, that they mattered, and it would have given them the opening to let me know how they and their family are really doing. I could’ve even introduced myself. But I didn’t do that. I made eye contact, smiled, and went on my way. I have to tell you I’ve been kicking myself ever since. There’s a sense of community when you recognize and are recognized by people when you come in to Mass. But it’s different when we are in rela-tionship with those around us. There’s a sense of being needed, of belonging, of being part of something much larger. There are so many times in life when we have to face our journeys alone, but Mass and Church shouldn’t be one of them. We need to really take advantage of the time at the beginning of Mass when we are asked to greet those around us and really connect with people. If someone has been absent and just returned, it’s okay to tell them they have been missed. If someone looks sad, it’s okay to mention they seem down and ask if they’d like to go for coffee/tea and talk. That’s what community does. They keep in touch, they reach out, they offer comfort, consolation, and even congratulations! They are a familiar face in the crowd, a hug, a laugh and potential friend. Look how much you already have in common! If you feel that your life has changed and you’d like to talk about it, contact me at [email protected] or 919-847-8205x241.

Who lives in Holy Name Province? There are 325 Franciscan Friars in Holy Name Province serving the people of God in a wide variety of settings – colleges, parishes, urban ministry centers and diverse social ministries along the East Coast. Today we continue the mission of Saint Francis to make the Gospel message come alive in our con-temporary world. We live in cities, suburbs, and rural areas. Our backgrounds are diverse and our ministries are varied; most of us serve in pastoral roles, while others work in education, social ministry, administration, and manual trades. What is the mission of the Franciscan Friars of Holy Name Province? The core of Franciscanism is in the living out of the Gospel of Jesus Christ within the Church according to the rule of life proposed and observed by Saint Francis of Assisi to preach this message to every creature. This is our purpose and mission. Our message is very simple: God loves each of us totally and unconditionally. What makes the Franciscan Friars different? The Franciscan Friars have always been thought of as “of the people and with the people”. Living in community is a core value and often helps the Friars to put things in a more “down to earth” perspective. The Friars never see themselves as better than anyone, and therefore they are not judgmental and are very accepting of everyone, those who are in the faith community and those who are not.All Are Welcome is the usual core of Franciscan hospitality.
