INTRODUCTIONIn our study today, the focus is going to be on the words redeem or redemption. The word that we could probably use instead is ransom. What would a news reporter be talking about if they said on the news that someone is going to pay the ransom for
someone else?
![Page 3: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
STUDYING GOD’S WORD
What price did Jesus pay to redeem (ransom) us?
![Page 4: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Ephesians 1:7In him we have redemption through his
blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace
![Page 5: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
The price Jesus paid was his blood. In the Old Testament, God said that when an
animal was sacrificed, it was the blood of the animal that paid for people’s sins. The
life of the animal was in its blood. When the blood was drained the life was gone. This was the price that had to be paid for our
sins. Jesus had to give up his lifeblood to pay for our sins.
![Page 6: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Isaiah 53:5But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are
healed.
![Page 7: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
The price Jesus paid was his suffering. Think about the pain Jesus went through. He was whipped, starved, hit, dehydrated, nails pierced him, had a crown of thorns on his head and hung on a cross to die.
This was the price God demanded of Jesus to pay for us. God is serious about
the punishment for sin.
![Page 8: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Matthew 20:28
just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom
for many.”
![Page 9: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
The price Jesus paid was his death. Let’s say that the mayor of Roscoe passed a law
that if a person does not ride his bike, scooter or skateboard on the left side of the
street it is a $100,000 fine. Let’s say you are caught riding on the right side of the
street. Your parents want to pay the fine for you, but the judge says that you have to pay
it with your own money. You would be in deep trouble, you can’t pay. That is our condition before God. The fine of sin is
death. That is what Jesus had to pay for us.
![Page 10: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Hebrews 9:15For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called
may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.
![Page 11: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
The price Jesus paid was enough to set us free. In a movie or TV show about a
kidnapping and a ransom, the situation is suspenseful to see if the person will truly be set free when the ransom is paid or whether the criminals will hurt the person. There is
no doubt about the ransom Jesus paid. We are free!
![Page 12: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
The price Jesus paid that was enough to redeem (ransom) us was his
blood, his sufferings and his death.
![Page 13: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Why was the price Jesus paid good enough?
![Page 14: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Psalm 49:7-8
7 No man can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for
him— 8 the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough
![Page 15: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
The price he paid was more than any of us could pay. Remember the example of the
fine for riding on the wrong side of the street. Let’s say that it was no longer
$100,000 but a $100 million. You might say to the judge, “I’ll work hard to pay!” But he will just laugh and throw you into
prison because he knows you would never be able to pay it back. None of us could
pay back the debt to free us from sin, death and the devil.
![Page 16: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
1 Peter 1:18-19 18 For you know that it was not with
perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of
life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19 but with the precious bloodprecious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defectof Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.
![Page 17: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
The blood of God’s Son is very precious. All the money in the world is not enough to pay back God for even one person's sins. The blood of God’s one and only
Son is the most precious thing there is in God’s eyes and that is what was used to pay for our sins. Jesus’ blood did what
money couldn’t do. It set us free.
![Page 18: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Isaiah 53:6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each
of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
![Page 19: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Jesus was innocent and God put all our sins on him. In the Old Testament, the scapegoat was a picture of Christ. The
people would lay their hands on the goats head and transfer their sins to it in a
spiritual way and then send the goat out in the wilderness to die. The goat was
innocent of the sins it was condemned for. Likewise, Christ did nothing sinful but died
because he carried all people’s sins.
![Page 20: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
The price Jesus paid was able to redeem (ransom) us because of his
holy, precious blood and his innocent sufferings and death.
![Page 21: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
GOD’S WORD IN MY LIFE
Agree or disagree and why? Jesus’ blood could ransom us because Jesus was a perfect man who was perfectly holy.
Evaluate: God could have set the price for sinners lower so that Jesus wouldn’t have had to suffer so much and give up His life.
![Page 22: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
STUDYING GOD’S WORD
How did Jesus carry out this humbling task?
![Page 23: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Philippians 2:7-87 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross!
![Page 24: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
He humbled himself by not using his heavenly power and glory. Consider the example of his power and submission to
the guards in the Garden of Gethsemane.
![Page 25: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
2 Corinthians 8:9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through
his poverty might become rich.
Jesus gave up his position in heaven and took on poverty for us. Jesus came down the 6 steps of humiliation as stated in the
2nd Article. He was conceived, born lowly etc...
![Page 26: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
The Bible tells me that Jesus did not make use of all of his heavenly
power and glory in order to save us.
![Page 27: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
CHRISTIAN VOCABULARY
Humiliation: Jesus willingly putting aside his power and glory to save us. (the six steps down)
Redeem: (redemption) Literally means to “buy back” . Our redemption from sin cost Jesus his holy precious blood, innocent suffering and death.

Are these events fair or unfair?
1. A murderer and rapist are executed by lethal injection
2. An armed robber is sentenced to life in prison.
3. A drug user contracts AIDS after using an infected needle
4.A perfect person suffered and died for the evil others have committed.
![Page 30: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
Perfect Jesus went willingly to the cross to suffer and die for our sins.
Our disobedience nailed Jesus to the cross. We receive purely out of
God’s grace, forgiveness of sins and eternal life, because Jesus received
the punishment we deserved. That’s redemption.
![Page 31: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
GOD’S WORD IN MY LIFE
Agree or disagree and why? Jesus redeemed me from the curse of all sins, there is no danger that any of my sins can condemn me.
Agree or disagree and why? Jesus' death paid for the sins of all believers.

INTRODUCTION When a ruler gets a lot of power after being victorious over his opponent, sometimes he uses that power to serve himself and make himself rich. He taxes his people far more than he needs to. Then he puts the money
in s Swiss bank account so that if he is deposed he will have a huge amount of money to live on the rest of his life. Why would a ruler do that? Why would people
be glad to get rid of someone like that?
![Page 35: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
STUDYING GOD’S WORD
How does Jesus’ descent into hell and his resurrection assure us
that he is our victor?
![Page 36: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
1 Peter 3:18-19 18 For Christ died for sins once for all,
the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death
in the body but made alive by the Spirit, 19 through whom also he went and
preached to the spirits in prison
![Page 37: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
Jesus’ descent into hell assures us of his victory over the devil and his angels. If
you have seen the movie “Gladiator”, you know what it was like when the army
returned to Rome victorious. There would be a big parade and the army would march down main street to proclaim their victory. The same is true of Jesus going down to hell and marching down main street to proclaim his victory over our enemies.
![Page 38: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
1 Corinthians 15:17And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.
![Page 39: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
Jesus’ resurrection assures us that our sins are forgiven. Let’s say someone
came to your door with a mountain bike and wanted to sell it to you for half price but only for cash. You might get a little suspicious and want some proof that he really owned the bike and that it wasn’t stolen. We’d be fools not to. We would
also be fools if we didn’t ask for proof that our sins are really forgiven. Jesus gives us the proof in his resurrection showing he kept his promise just like he said he
would.
![Page 40: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
1 Corinthians 15:22-2322 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all
will be made alive. 23 But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then,
when he comes, those who belong to him.
![Page 41: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)
Jesus’ resurrection assures us that he will raise us from the dead. If I say to you, “I
can do 100 vertical pushups in a row without using a wall to balance,” the first thing you would say is “Prove it.” Jesus
says that he will raise us from the dead on the last day. We don’t have to say to him
prove it. He already has in his own resurrection from the dead.
![Page 42: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)
Jesus’ descent into hell and his resurrection assure us that he is our
Victor over our enemies of sin, death and the devil.

What does Jesus’ ascension mean for us every day?
![Page 45: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/45.jpg)
Ephesians 4:8 This is why it says: “When he
ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men.”
![Page 46: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/46.jpg)
Since Jesus returned to Heaven as a conquering hero, he proved his work for us was complete. When David killed Goliath, he was treated like a hero because it was a
victory for all God’s people over the Philistines. So too with Jesus, he was
received as a conquering hero because his victory was for all God’s people over our
enemies.
![Page 47: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/47.jpg)
John 14:2-32 In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it
were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that
you also may be where I am.
![Page 48: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/48.jpg)
He returned to prepare a place for us in heaven. Make a promise to return. Leave the room and come back in a
minute. Ask if there was any doubt that you would return. The same thing
applies to Jesus. He will return as he promised so each day we can rejoice as
we are a day closer to seeing Jesus.
![Page 49: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/49.jpg)
Jesus’ ascension means that every day we are one day closer to being
with him in the place that he has gone ahead to prepare for us.
![Page 50: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/50.jpg)
CHRISTIAN VOCABULARY
Exultation: Jesus took back his full power and glory beginning with his victorious descent into hell. (His five steps back up)
Resurrection: literally coming to life from the dead - refers to Christ’s coming to life on the 3rd day and the raising to life of all people on the last day.
Ascension: Jesus’ visible return to heaven 40 days after his resurrection from the dead.

GOD’S WORD IN MY LIFE
Jesus did not descend into hell to give the devil, his evil angels or unbelievers a second chance. Give two reasons why it is important for us to understand this.
Evaluate: Which is the most important church festival that we celebrate? Is it Christmas which is the birthday of Jesus or Easter which is the resurrection of Jesus?
![Page 52: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/52.jpg)

What does Jesus sitting at the right hand of God mean for us every day?

Ephesians 1:20,22 20 which he exerted in Christ when he
raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 22 And God placed all things under his feet
and appointed him to be head over everything for the church,

Jesus is ruling over all things for the good of the church. When a little child
plays a game by alone, they always make sure their team wins. Jesus is
something like that. Being in complete control means that believers
always will be victorious in the end.
![Page 55: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/55.jpg)
1 John 2:1My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our
defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.

Jesus is before the Father pleading our case and defending us. A good defense lawyer is a key to winning a case. If you
try to defend yourself, you might say or do the wrong thing. Jesus is our perfect
defense lawyer as God’s Son. We can’t possibly lose because Jesus has already
won it for us.

attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever
and ever. Amen.

Jesus is always protecting us to bring us safely to his kingdom. In Romans 8:38,
Paul gives us a list of things that might try and separate us from God: life or death,
angels or demons, present or future, powerful people, etc. Nothing in this world can succeed in tearing us away from God’s love. That is the same confidence we have every day because Jesus is protecting us
every day from heaven.

Jesus sitting at the right hand of God means that every day he is
ruling over everything, defending me and protecting me .

GOD’S WORD IN MY LIFE
Evaluate: Jane has a friend who says that she can’t see how Jesus can be ruling over all things because there are so many sad and evil things which take place in the world.
Agree or disagree and why? Jesus can’t plead our case very well before God unless in our lives we really try to be a good Christian.

STUDYING GOD’S WORD
What does Jesus’ coming to judge the world mean for us every day?
![Page 62: Confirmation 12 & 13 done](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/5588cfe5d8b42a3a1f8b46cb/html5/thumbnails/62.jpg)
Matthew 25:31-3331 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he
will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered
before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and
the goats on his left.

Jesus will come in glory to judge all people. Some think that they can escape Jesus’
judgment by having their bodies cremated and then having somebody scatter their
ashes over the ocean. But God says that everybody that ever lived will stand before
Jesus’ judgment seat.

Matthew 24:36,42,4436 “No one knows about that day or hour,
not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 42 “Therefore keep
watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 44 So you also
must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect
him.

Jesus will come at a time that nobody knows, so we need to be ready every day.
There are many books out there and TV programs that claim that they know the
end of the world. People have sold everything and have gone to a certain
place because they thought they would meet Jesus. Every effort will be
disappointed because Jesus will come when we least expect Him.

Mark 16:15-1615 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.
16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe
will be condemned.
Verse 16

Jesus will judge on the basis of whether people believed in Him or not. In Matthew 25, it says that Jesus will put people on his right and on his left. He will then point out what people on his left never did in love for him (hungry, thirsty, naked, sick, in prison) while the people on his right did all these things out of love for Jesus. In this way, Jesus is going to use what people did to
determine whether they believed in him or not. The believers will be praised for the
things that Christ had to do perfectly in their place.

Jesus’ coming to judge the world reminds me to continue to study God’s Word
every day so that I am a believer who is ready whenever he comes.

GOD’S WORD IN MY LIFE
Agree or Disagree and why? When Jesus says that he will come on a day when we least expect him, he is trying to scare us into being prepared at all times for his coming.
Agree or Disagree and why? Jesus coming to judge the world is nothing for us to worry about.
