DEFINITION
Confined space is a fully or partial enclosed space where there isa risk of serious injury from hazardous substances or conditionswithin the confined space.
A confined space entry (CSE) means not only complete bodyentry, but also inserting a head into pipe ends

Group standards and requirements
HEMP shall be applied :
Identification of the hazards
Risks assessment
Detailed analysis of the hazards (PTW + JHA)
Description of the necessary controls andrecovery measures
The alternatives to entering the space have been considered
A rescue plan shall be prepared and implemented for each CSE

MANAGEMENT SYSTEM ObjectivesEvery effort should be made to minimise the need of CSE
E.g. : use of robots, apply methods such as ultrasonics
Responsability and competences
CSE is considered to be a HSE critical activity
Planning, procedures and HEMP

CONFINED SPACE HAZARDS
Oxygen deficiency (less than 20 %) Oxygen enrichment (more than 21,5 %)
Fire and explosion (CSE not allowed if the flammable concentration isgreater than 10 % LFL)
Toxic hazards (action has be taken if more than 50 % OEL) Corrosive hazards
Physical hazards (noise, thermal stress, electric shock, ionising radiation) Unsafe conditions (restricted working space, poor visibility )
Psychological issues

EQUIPMENT AND RESSOURCES
Inert gas supply (ensure that inert atmosphere is maintained) Breathing air and communication system (requirements list) Other equipment (access )
People
- Number minimum in the confined space
- Console operator (monitor and record the conditions)
-Attendant (breathing air supplies, line of communication)should be
wearing a full inert gas suit and breathing apparatus, and be ready torespond in an emergency
- Supervisor and one or more assistants
