Once you find the device, you need to assign a static IP address to the Moxa Nport by using the “Assign IP” function.

Moxa Nport settings in the Moxa Nport Web Administration interface.

You can now access the Moxa Web administration web site. The website´s url is the IP address of the Moxa device. Login using “admin” as username and nothing (blank) as password or refer to the manual for username/password. Once logged in you can change the username and/or the password.

We recommend upgrading to the newest released firmware. You can find this at

Moxa´s web site.

In the Basic settings, you have the possibility to set the correct time zone. This is optional.

Please make sure that the IP address is set as static.

Use Secure for encrypting communication between the Moxa Nport unit and the Nport windows driver. This option is optional, but highly recommended if communication leaves the LAN.

P1 to P8 are Ports. This may vary depending on the model you have bought. It is possible to apply the settings to all ports at the same time.

FAQ

Q: How can I measure the signal strength ?

A: If you have a program like hyperterminal or PuTTY, you can talk with the modem. Connnect to the modem and use this command: at+csq

This command will tell you the modem signal strength. Please remember that the modem only can handle one connection per COM-port.

You can see this in the SMS PASSCODE web Administration Interface in the monitoring section.

Q: I have measured my signal strength. What does the value indicate?

A: The signal strength is measured in a scale from 0 – 31, where 31 is the best result.

If your modem returns the value 99, it is an indication of an error with the connection to the modem.

Signal Strength above 20 is excellent. Signal strength between 15 and 20 might cause problems such as disconnects or low throughput.

With a signal strength below 20% we recommend that, you move the antenna to a location with better signal strength (or reconsider GSM network supplier).

Q: I don’t have PuTTY or HyperTerminal

A: Microsoft used to have HyperTerminal built into their operation system, but in newer releases, HyperTerminal has been left out. Instead, you can use Putty which is a freeware tool.

32 bit version of PuTTY

The PuTTY homepage is here: http://www.putty.org/ The PuTTY download page is here:

Q: My modem is black listed. How do I get it white listed

again?

A: Your modem has been black listed, because it has not responded in a timely fashion 3 times. To “white list” your modem, please restart the transmitter service.

Please check the event-log to search for the reason why the modem has not responded 3 times.

Q: How do I connect to the modem, or test the connection to the modem?

A: In order to test the connection to the modem, you must have a program like HyperTerminal or PuTTY.

In this example, your modem connects to COM4.

Your must make sure that no other programs is connected to COM4. Remember to stop the transmitter service, if SMS PASSCODE is using COM4.

Open PuTTY (se picture below). 1) Select Serial as connection type 2) Write COM4 (or the com port your are using) 3) Click on open

A window should open (blank), and you can type now.

Try to write ATI, and the modem should respond with what kind of modem it is.

Example:

If the modem does not respond, you do not have connection with the modem, or the modem is blocked by another connection.

Q: how can I set another pin code on my SIM card.

A: There are two ways of changing the pin code on your SIM card (or removing the pin code).

1) You can take the SIM card out of the modem and plug it into a mobile phone. Just follow your regular PIN setting like you are used to.

2) You can open a terminal connection to the modem, and use AT commands to change the pin code. AT commands is mostly alike from one product to another product, but in rare cases they can be slightly different. Please refer to your manual for specific AT commands for changing the pin code. If you are not comfortable with AT commands we recommend that you use are mobile phone to change the pin code. Please note that if you have made three faulty attempts to change the pin code, you will need to enter the PUK code.

Q: which AT commands should use for test purpose

A: There are no specific commands for test, but here are a couple of suggestions that do not make any modifications:

ATI Status (Manufacturer, Model, Revision, IMEI, capabilities)

AT+CSQ Returns signal strength

AT&V Status
