Preparations

1 Introduction

This instruction describes how to configure Ethernet traffic over PlesiochronousDigital Hierarchy (PDH) in MINI-LINK TN.

2 Safety InformationMake sure that the information in the following documents has been understoodby the persons performing the procedures:• Personal Health and Safety Information, Reference [7]• System Safety Information, Reference [9]• Supplementary Safety Information for MINI-LINK, Reference [8]

3 Preparations

This section presents the preparations needed for a successful completionof the procedures in this instruction.

3.1 Additional Preparations

Consider the following additional preparations:

• Read through all applicable sections and make sure referenced documentsare available.

• Access the NE using MINI-LINK Craft. For more information, see Accessinga Network Element, Reference [1].

Figure 1 Ethernet Overview

1. A configuration of Ethernet is set up for Ethernet over PDH with PDHInverse Multiplexing for Ethernet (PDH-IME).

2. WAN and LAN is configured, and for the connection between them either ofthe following is used:

• Ethernet Switch (Layer 2 Connection)

• Layer 1 Connection

If an Ethernet Switch is used, LAG (optional) and VLAN are also configured.

The node must be equipped with the following hardware:

• NPU3 B or NPU1 C

• ETU3 or ETU2 B

• MMU2 B/C/D/H

See also the following for overview information: Ethernet over PDHConfiguration Flowchart, Reference [4].

It is also possible to perform a basic configuration of Ethernet over PDH withthe help of MINI-LINK Craft wizards.

See MINI-LINK Craft User Guide, Reference [5] and MINI-LINK Craft UserInterface Descriptions, Reference [6] for more information about the wizards.

4.1 Configuring Ethernet over PDH using the EthernetSwitch

The following are the main steps when configuring Ethernet over PDH using theEthernet switch:

1. Configure the radio links, see Configuration Management Operations,Reference [2].

2. Configure the PDH-IME capacity and connect it to Ethernet, see Section 5on page 4.

3. Activate the Ethernet switch, see Configuring Ethernet, Reference [3].

4. Connect the WAN and LAN interfaces to the switch ports, see ConfiguringEthernet, Reference [3].

5. Configure LAG at the Ethernet switch, see Configuring Ethernet, Reference[3].

6. Configure a VLAN and add the switch ports to the VLAN, see ConfiguringEthernet, Reference [3].

7. Configure the switch ports, see Configuring Ethernet, Reference [3].

After these steps, it is possible to continue with the following configurations (seeConfiguring Ethernet, Reference [3]):• Spanning Tree• Quality of Service• Static Unicast Filtering• Static Multicast Filtering• MAC Address White Lists• LAN-DCN Interfaces

4.2 Configuring Ethernet over PDH using Layer 1Connection

The following are the main steps when configuring Ethernet over PDH usingLayer 1 Connection:

1. Configure the radio link, see Configuration Management Operations,Reference [2].

2. Configure the PDH-IME capacity and connect it to Ethernet, see Section 5on page 4.

3. Connect the WAN and LAN interfaces to Layer 1 and create a Layer 1Connection, see Configuring Ethernet, Reference [3].

5 Configuring PDH-IME

This section describes how to configure Ethernet over PDH functionality usingPDH-IME.

PDH-IMEs are inverse multiplexers located on ETU3/ETU2 B. Inversemultiplexing speeds up data transmission by dividing a data stream into multipleconcurrent streams that are transmitted at the same time across separate E1channels and are then reconstructed at the other end back into the originaldata stream.

An ETU3/ETU2 B has six PDH-IMEs divided into two groups:• PDH-IME 1, 2, and 6• PDH-IME 3, 4, and 5

A maximum of 48 E1s can be assigned to each of these PDH-IME groups fora total capacity of maximum 96 E1s.

Configuring PDH-IME

For example, if PDH-IME 1 is assigned 48 E1s, then PDH-IME 2 and PDH-IME6 cannot be assigned any. Another 48 E1s can still be assigned to PDH-IME3, 4, and 5.

To configure Ethernet over PDH functionality using PDH-IME:

1. In the Management Tree, expand an ETU3 or ETU2 B.

2. Right-click a PDH-IME.

3. Click Configure and then click General.

4. In the Connect to list, select Ethernet.

5. Set the other parameters. For more information about the parameters, seeMINI-LINK Craft User Interface Descriptions, Reference [6].

6. On the File menu, click Save to apply changes.

7. Right-click the configured PDH-IME and click Configure and then clickCapacity.

8. Do the following to assign E1s to the PDH-IME:

• Under Modules, select the plug-in that contains the E1s to be assignedto the PDH-IME.

• Under Available E1, select the E1s to be assigned to the PDH-IME.

• Click to move the selected E1s to the Assigned E1 list. UseCTRL or SHIFT to select multiple items.

Repeat these steps for each plug-in unit containing E1s to be assignedto the PDH-IME.

Note: Up to 48 E1s can be assigned to a PDH-IME. However, to assignmore than 16 E1s to a PDH-IME, you must do the following:

• Assign the first 16 E1s and then click Save on the File menu.

• Make sure the radio link is up and that at least one E1 isassigned to the PDH-IME in the far-end NE.

• Assign the remaining (up to 32) E1s and then click Save onthe File menu.

• Make sure that the same number of E1s are assigned to thePDH-IMEs on both sides of the radio link.

9. On the File menu, click Save to apply changes.

When the PDH-IME is connected to Ethernet, a new WAN interface is added inthe Management Tree. To locate the new WAN interface, expand Ethernet

and WAN Interfaces The new WAN interface has the same physical name(Subrack/Position/Port) as the PDH-IME.

Note: There are a maximum of seven WAN interfaces available for NPU3 Band 20 WAN interfaces available for NPU1 C. For example, for anNPU3 B, if six WAN interfaces are used by the PDH-IMEs in oneETU3/ETU2 B, only one WAN interface is available for a secondETU3/ETU2 B.

The WAN interface can be connected to a port on the Ethernet switch or be usedin a Layer 1 Connection configuration, see Configuring Ethernet, Reference [3].
