Configuring Cisco Multimode G.SHDSL EFM/ATM in Cisco ISR 4000 Series Routers
Last Updated: May 24, 2018
G.SHDSL is the technology that allows devices to send and receive high-speed symmetrical data streams over a single pair of copper wires at rates between 192 kbps and 15.36 Mbps. This document describes how to configure Cisco G.SHDSL Ethernet in the first mile (EFM) and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). Cisco G.SHDSL EFM/ATM Network Interface Module (NIM) connects Cisco ISR 4000 Series Routers with central office Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers (DSLAMs) and provides up to four lines of G.SHDSL (ITU-T 991.2) connectivity.

2Configuring Cisco Multimode G.SHDSL EFM/ATM in Cisco ISR 4000 Series Routers
Prerequisites for Cisco G.SHDSL EFM/ATM NIM• Ensure that you have the appropriate Cisco router to serve as the host router.
The following Cisco routers support Cisco G.SHDSL EFM/ATM NIMs:
– Cisco ISR 4221
– Cisco ISR 4321
– Cisco ISR 4331
– Cisco ISR 4351
– Cisco ISR 4431
– Cisco ISR 4451
• Use the show version command to ensure that the router is running the correct IOS software. The ISR 4000 series routers require Cisco IOS XE Fuji 16.8.1 or later.
Note When minimum release requirements are met, you can change images on the router without affecting performance.
• Install the Cisco G.SHDSL EFM/ATM NIM on the router, using the directions provided in Installing the Cisco G.SHDSL Network Interface Modules and Cisco Network Modules, Server Modules, and Interface Cards Regulatory Compliance and Safety Information.
Information About Cisco G.SHDSL EFM/ATMCisco G.SHDSL EFM/ATM NIM support up to four pairs of digital subscriber lines (DSL). The DSL pairs are bundled in groups and configured in the Cisco IOS command-line interface (CLI) by using the dsl-group command. Selecting the mode (ATM or EFM) is done by using the mode command.
The NIM supports the following features:
• You can configure up to 4 DSL groups.
• Auto mode is supported only on one DSL group. For instance, DSL group 0.
• In ATM mode, the NIM supports maximum throughput of 22.7Mbps; each line supports 5704Kbps.
• In ATM Mode, you can configure the lines to use 2-wire, 4-wire (standard or enhanced), or m-pair.
• In EFM mode, the NIM supports maximum throughput of 61216Kbps; each line supports maximum of 15304Kbps with 128-TCPAM.
• In EFM mode, you can configure a DSL group with any one of the lines in 2-wire non-bonding mode or with multiple lines in bonding mode.
• Depending on the mode (ATM or EFM), the corresponding interface (ATM or EFM) is automatically created.

shdsl rateTo define a symmetric high bit rate digital subscriber line (SHDSL) rate, use the shdsl rate command in the configuration controller DSL group mode.
shdsl rate {number | auto | enhanced}
Syntax Description
Command Default The default keyword is auto.
Command Modes Configuration controller DSL group (config-controller-dsl-group)
Command History
Usage Guidelines Use the dsl-group command to create a DSL group, and then define the SHDSL line rate using the shdsl rate command.
The recommended configuration for the CPE is shdsl rate auto. When configuring the fixed rate, use the same rate that was used for configuring the CO.
Based on the type of DSL group, the following standard data rates are supported:
DSL Group with 1 Pair
• Annex A and B—192 to 2304 kbps
• Annex F and G (32 TC-PAM)—768 to 5696 kbps
• Annex F and G (16 TC-PAM)—2304 to 3840 kbps
number Specifies the data rate supported for the digital subscriber line (DSL) group.
auto Specifies the best data rate that can be used for the given configurations at the Central Office (CO) and Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) termination.
enhanced Specifies the Lantiq extended rate. This option is applicable only for the CO-EFM mode.
Note If annex is F/G/A to F/B-G, and coding is 64 or 128 TC-PAM lines, the shdsl rate enhanced option should be used.
Note The enhanced option is available only if the termination is CO and mode is Ethernet in the first mile (EFM). If the link partner supports Lantiq extension, you can use the enhanced option to train at higher rates. If the link partner does not support Lantiq extension, lines are trained to standard rate based on the annex and Trellis Coded Pulse Amplitude Modulation (TC-PAM).

handshakeTo configure a handshake, use the handshake command in the configuration controller DSL group mode.
handshake [auto | ieee | itut]
Note The handshake command is not available in the CO-ATM mode.
Command Default None
Command Modes Configuration controller DSL group (config-controller-dsl-group)
Command History
Usage Guidelines The handshake command is useful when you encounter interoperability issues with different DSLAMs. When terminations at the CO and CPE have the same handshake mechanism, the line will train faster without interoperability issues.
For better interoperability with different DSLAMs, use one of the following options with the handshake auto command.
• In the CPE-ATM mode:
– If DSLAM supports G.SHDSL rates, use the g.shdsl keyword.
– If DSLAM supports G.SHDSL.BIS rates, use the g.shdsl.bis keyword.
auto Specifies automatic detection of G.SHDSL or G.SHDSL.BIS rates.
Note Auto option is supported only in CPE mode. If termination occurs at the Customer Premise Equipment (CPE), regardless of whether the controller is in the CPE-ATM mode or the Ethernet in first mile (EFM) mode, the auto keyword is the default.
g.shdsl Initiates the G.SHDSL handshake. This is supported on the CPE-ATM mode only.
g.shdsl.bis Initiates the G.SHDSL.BIS handshake. This is supported on the CPE-ATM mode only.
ieee Initiates the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) handshake. This is supported on the EFM mode only.
itut Initiates the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) handshake. This is supported on the EFM mode only.
Note If termination occurs in the CO-EFM mode, the itut keyword is the default.
