Gaps in Integral Drift Eliminators Point of View: Inside of Unit Looking Out

Advantages: 1. Bonded Fill Media EVAPCO EVAPCO crossflow fill features integral drift eliminators and air inlet louvers. The integral design allows for entire bonded block sections to be easily handled. Block sections are each 1 ft. wide x 2 ft. long and the section height varies with unit size. The bonded block design allows for minimal air bypass since the fill sheets will not separate over time. BAC and SPX/Marley BAC and SPX/Marley utilize sheet fill in their crossflow cooling towers. This fill is a hanging sheet-type which is supported from galvanized steel bars or tubes that span the width of the casing panels. The sheet fill is not bonded together so the spacing between fill sheets during manufacturing is critical to overall performance. The fill sheets may potentially separate over time allowing air to bypass. Air bypass leads to a negative thermal performance impact since a portion of the incoming air does not make contact with the recirculated system water. Marley sheet fill includes integral drift eliminators and air inlet louvers. BAC sheet fill features integral drift eliminators and separate inlet louvers. Direct exposure to the outside elements increases the potential for visible scale build up on the fill sheets over time.

2. Bottom Supported Fill Media EVAPCO The bonded block crossflow fill is bottom supported with G-235 galvanized steel channels as standard. The supports will change to Type 304 or 316 stainless steel dependent upon the stainless steel basin construction. The bottom supports allow a minimum clearance of 3” above the basin floor for routine basin cleaning. This allows sufficient room for optional factory supplied sump sweeper piping to be used whenever sweeper piping is required.

BAC and SPX/Marley Hanging fill sheets may begin to sag and stretch over time until the fill sheets are touching the basin floor. It may be necessary to field cut the fill sheets 3-4” from the bottom to allow access for routine basin cleaning. Trimming the fill sheets reduces efficiency and creates a negative thermal performance impact. Any sediment or debris under the fill sheets will be trapped causing the likelihood of localized corrosion to greatly increase when the fill sheets rest on the basin floor.

3. Modular Hot Water Basins

EVAPCO The hot water basins are designed such that they can be easily removed and replaced without the need to remove any side or end casing panels. The standard construction for hot water basins is G-235 galvanized steel*. EVAPCO’s modular hot water basin design allows for minimal downtime and lower replacement costs over the competitor’s traditional crossflow hot water basin design.

BAC and SPX/Marley Other crossflow cooling towers include hot water basins constructed of G-235 galvanized steel as standard*. However, the hot water basins are integral to the end or side panels. Replacement costs could be higher for this design because it typically requires additional work to remove and replace the hot water basins. * Due to the corrosive environment of the hot water basin it is not uncommon to replace the hot water basin before the unit has exceeded its useful life.

4. Cold Water Basin Covers (optional) EVAPCO Cold water basin covers are an optional accessory for the AXS cooling tower. The cold water basin covers effectively block sunlight and debris from coming in direct contact with basin water at the air inlet ends.* The material of construction for cold water basin covers will match that of the basin panels (G-235 galvanized steel, Type 304 or Type 316 stainless steel) and will be provided with handles for easy removal and handling. These removable covers provide protection against debris and sunlight from the air inlet ends while still offering access for routine basin cleaning and visual inspection from outside the unit. BAC BAC utilizes a sloped basin feature which does not allow sunlight to come in direct contact with basin water at either air inlet end of the unit.* The basin slopes up to the basin end panels at the bottom of the fill sheets as part of the basin design. Although the design provides protection against sunlight through the air inlet ends it does not allow access for routine basin cleaning and visual inspection from outside the unit. SPX/Marley SPX/Marley has an optional accessory similar to the cold water basin covers offered by EVAPCO. The covers claim to protect the basin from sunlight and debris.* * Due to the inherent design of crossflow cooling towers sunlight will contact basin water through the fan cylinder opening for any manufacturer.
