Dear ACCET Colleagues:

On behalf of the Accrediting Commission and staff, welcome to the 2011 ACCET Annual

Conference. This year’s theme, A Partnership for Quality: The Ever Changing Challenges

marks ACCET's 37th anniversary and recalls the numerous changes past and present that have

affected your institutions and this agency over that time. It is no revelation that proprietary

schools and accrediting agencies, both national and regional, are often cast in terms attribut-

ing the failures of our sector with the broad stroke of condemnation applicable to the few, al-

beit often those with the largest number of locations and students, so as to taint us all. The im-

pact of regulations emanating from the U.S. Department of Education over the past year is by

most any account intrusive, burdensome, and counterproductive. While the temptation to sim-

ply slough it off with “what’s new” may satisfy our darker inclinations, your important work

and your livelihoods will not be well-served by anything short of determination and adapta-

tion in meeting the challenges ahead.

We have been resolute in our collective focus on providing quality training specifically aimed

at demonstrating positive outcomes in student satisfaction, certification, completion, and

placement rates, which in turn has served as a mission-centered report card on successful met-

rics for each institution. These measures were not casually adopted or achieved, but with the

dedication and support of the vast majority of our members have lead to the heightened recog-

nition and credibility of ACCET. We have not strayed from those values and ACCET and our

member institutions continue to work diligently to maintain the balance of entrepreneurial

vigor and educational soundness, recognizing that measurable outcomes that enhance the

value of our students as the truest long-term indicator of success.

This conference is hopefully a fitting destination to momentarily get off the daily treadmill of

work to take a break from the day-to-day grind with some fresh insights and good company.

We have assembled an impressive group of colleagues, including our ACCET Commissioners

and staff, the U.S. Department of Education, Department of Homeland Security, state licens-

ing agencies, and other accrediting agencies that share our mission, along with guest speakers,

exhibitors, and fellow member schools, to provide us this annual venue for staying in touch,

keeping current, and looking ahead. In that spirit, we welcome you to ACCET's 37th anniver-

sary event and look forward to making or renewing acquaintances as we join together at this

important partnership for quality that matches our words with our deeds.

Best Regards,

Roger J. Williams

―Whistles, Bumps & Jumps!‖

Featured Keynote Speaker:

Rob Curtin, Chief Applications Officer, US Education Group, Microsoft Corporation

How will consumer choice and “always connected” services impact next generation education? As student/consumer expectations shift, so too must the role of technology evolve in the education experience. Consumerization goes beyond “BYOD: Bring Your Own Device” and inserts consumer services into the core of the academic mission. This session will explore established consumer models that are likely to affect education experiences and provide insight that will shape your leadership role, your people talent, and your institutional strategy. Rob Curtin has been working with technology in education for more than 15 years. Starting with IBM in 1989 he joined Microsoft in 1991, where he managed the IBM re-marketing relationship focusing on providing bundled solutions to education customers, and later became the featured speaker in a 110-city Educational Technology seminar sponsored by Microsoft and Compaq. Rob joined Exeter Educational Management Systems in 1996 where he led product strategy and market penetration initiatives for Exeter Student Suite as VP of Application Consulting. He remained with the Exeter team through the acquisitions by Sallie Mae Solutions, SCT, and SunGard concluding as General Manager of SCT Matrix before returning to Microsoft in 2002 as Industry Solutions Manager for Higher Education. In addition to his work with Microsoft's strategic clients in the US, Rob also leads the MS Higher Education Advisory Group (HEAG). 3:15 pm – 4:30 pm Annual Business Meeting Canyon I Dave Wilson, Chair of the ACCET Accrediting Commission, will preside over ACCET‟s Annual Business Meeting which will address matters pertinent to the business and activities of ACCET over the past year as well as a financial report. Faculty hold the key to meeting your accreditor and institutional goals for completion. Are your online faculty prepared for the adjustment from live lectures to asynchronous coaching and mentoring? This session will address how faculty must learn to engage their students using multiple tools - text, audio, video, collaborative exercises and new forms of assessment. Is distance learning, with its generally lower completion rates, a problem or part of the solution? The presenters will discuss institutional approaches to online programs that start with curriculum and end with good retention and placement.

Friday, October 28, 2011 Canyon I 8:00am - 9:15am Closing General Session

Our industry must not only “survive” the proverbial storm from which we are now emerging, but we must actually “thrive”. The private school industry has been one of the most dynamic drivers for change in the history of education. While “operating on a new frontier”, we must go back to the basic strengths, core values and chief value propositions that only our schools can deliver and that have served us so well. The “rules” of the game may have changed but the fundamental need for education that works has not. Richard “Dick” Luebke, Jr. graduated from Idaho State University in 1976 with a degree in Secondary

Education. After serving as a Development Director for the Boy Scouts of America he joined his fa-

ther in 1984 to assist in the family business known then as Pima County Business and Medical Insti-

tute. Starting out as an admissions representative provided him a chance to learn about how to serve

students in reaching their career goals. Dick was appointed CEO in 1999 and has led the growth ini-

tiatives that have resulted in the development of 10 programmatically accredited associate degree

programs and three Bachelors programs. PMI now serves over 11,000 students at 13 campus loca-

tions in 7 states. Dick is active in the Tucson community serving on local non-profit boards.

The political tenor is mandating more & more transparency in retention and job placement rates that are verifiable and documented. This session presents a focus on retaining students by examining all operational facets: admissions, faculty, classroom activities, departmental roles, and campus retention & completion techniques. Job placement success is a key indicator of a school‟s success and requires creativity in assisting graduates in their job search, assuring that jobs appropriately utilize the skills learned from the programs of study. This session will leave attendees inspired with new ideas as they leave the 2011 ACCET Annual Conference. It will also feature for the first time, a report from the ACCET Completion & Placement Committee, represented by two ACCET Commissioners and the staff liaison of the C&P Committee who review and recommend actions relative to institutions‟ completion & placement results at each Commission meeting.
