Conference SynopsisThe age of the tall building as a single iconic piece of sculpture, standing in isolation from its surroundings, must now come to an end. We have a responsibility to ensure that these permanent urban structures engender a future-oriented urban response to the greatest challenges of our time: unprecedented population growth; mass urbanization; climate change; environmental degradation; social, political and economic change; and the rapid advance of myriad technical innovations.

The future of humanity on this planet relies on the collective benefits of urban density; reducing both land consumption and the energy needed to construct and operate the horizontally dispersed city. Tall buildings must now be the vehicles for creating increased density not just through sheer height, but by connecting multiple layers of the city. Physical urban infrastructure, circulation, greenery, and urban functions traditionally restricted to the ground level would all, ideally, continue up and into the building, such that the buildings themselves become an extension of the city: a part of the two-dimensional horizontal urban plane flipped vertical.

The CTBUH 2017 Conference will thus be inquiring far beyond the tall building as icon, to debate a new set of guidelines and responsibilities toward skyscrapers becoming “connectors” in the city. The discussion will embrace every discipline, from urban planning to cost consulting, architectural design to vertical transportation, real estate development to curtain wall design. Sydney, a city with a 230-year history in urban development, finds itself at the nexus of much of the current debate about cities: density vs. suburbanization; modernity vs. historical preservation; infrastructure vs. urban life; the high- vs. low-rise realms. Through developments such as Barangaroo, Central Park, Sydney Metro, and Parramatta Square, the city is largely reinventing itself. With its breathtaking combination of harbor, skyline, and opera house as a backdrop, and the famous Antipodean welcoming charm of its people, there is no better place for this debate at this specific time than Sydney. Of course, no CTBUH conference in Australia would be complete without considering Melbourne or Brisbane, the country’s other premier urban laboratories. Thus, the fourth and fifth day of the conference will comprise regional programming in those cities. Join us south of the equator this year for the CTBUH 2017 Conference, for a truly global gathering to debate what the future holds for tall buildings and urban density.

Who Should Attend? Why Attend? As the recognized international authority on tall buildings, CTBUH conferences differ significantly from the many commercial conferences now being held around the world, in terms of both quality of knowledge-sharing and networking opportunities (see industry leader endorsement on rear cover). Dissemination of best-practice information is of primary importance at every CTBUH conference. Thus, every presentation given at the 2017 Conference will be substantiated by an abstract and captured in the form of video for dissemination after the event. All delegates will receive a USB drive at the event, containing a PDF of every PowerPoint to be given at the conference. In addition, an extensive report and archive of the conference and all the material presented will be collated after the event. Additional benefits include:

• Learn from distinguished experts on the latest in tall buildings, infrastructure and urban development

• Gain knowledge and insight in the latest thinking on sustainability• Network with top, internationally-influential industry leaders• Develop collaborative partnerships and business leads• Earn Continuing Professional Education Credits• Better understand the business opportunities in Australia & Internationally• Promote your company through sponsorship or exhibiting• Influence best-practice thinking and policy making• Experience the dynamic cities of Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane• Tour seminal tall buildings and urban spaces (completed and under

construction)• Enjoy social-networking events at top venues• Experience the multi-national, multi-disciplinary network of the CTBUH

Colleagues from all disciplines with a connection to tall buildings and urban habitat are encouraged to attend, including the following professions:

• Building Owners & Managers• Building Funders & Developers• Building Tenants & Occupiers• National & Local Government Officials• Code & Regulatory Authorities• Contractors & Construction Firms• Architects & Urban Planners• Cost Consultants & Surveyors• Elevator Consultants/Suppliers• Energy Companies• Engineers (all disciplines)• Façade Design Firms• Fire & Life Safety Professionals• Geotechnical/Foundation Firms• Insurers & Legal Firms• Material & Building System Suppliers• NGO’s & Academics• Project/Construction Managers• Transport, Infrastructure & Landscape Companies

Every conference delegate will receive a USB drive containing a digital copy of all abstracts and every presentation given at the conference. To learn about sponsoring this USB drive, see page 17.

Core Venue & HotelHyatt Regency Sydney The core conference will be held in the Hyatt Regency Sydney, with follow on programs to Melbourne and Brisbane afterwards (see page 10). Located adjacent to Darling Harbour in the city’s central business district, this fantastic venue features unparalleled views, first-rate accommodations, and an ideal position in the urban heart of Sydney – all within walking distance of top attractions, restaurants, and amenities. The hotel completed a major redevelopment in 2016, which included the refurbishment of the existing building, the construction of a 3,700-square-meter convention center, and a 25-story tower including 13 new hotel levels, making this the perfect location for a CTBUH Conference.

Very favorable, negotiated rates at the Hyatt Regency Sydney mean that you can stay in this prime location during the conference for highly competitive rates. In particular, as a non-profit organization, CTBUH has to guarantee a minimum number of rooms at the hotel, so delegates are urged to help reduce this risk to the Council

by please staying at the conference hotel.

Sydney’s population is projected to grow from about 5mi in 2016 to 6.4mi by 2036.

The sponsor will have its logo printed on one side, and company information on the drive.

Gold + Research Seed Funding An international “call for research submissions” will be made, with one project awarded seed funding of US$20,000, which will be announced, by the sponsor, during the Conference. The sponsor will be recognized as the supporter of this initiative, and in connection with the research project itself.

Did the Conference fulfill your reason for attending?

I really enjoy the knowledge sharing and high-level networking. As a practitioner in the Asia Pacific region coping with rapid urbanization, my work and projects often were, and continue to be, super high-rise buildings. CTBUH’s most updated information is very useful.”

– Kenneth Hau, HKIA

“The quality of the papers, presentations, building visits and networking were all first rate. All too often I have attended conferences where you gain very little technically and the attendees are really just part of a glorified club. That is definitely not the case with any events organized by CTBUH and this one in particular.”

– Ian Duncombe, ChapmanBDSP

“I truly enjoyed the presentations and not just the organized visits, but exploring the environment of the locations.“

– Albert Taylor, AKT II

“Given how strong last year’s program was it looked hard to beat, but this year’s conference really brought together the best and brightest architects, engineers, planners, academics and forward thinking owners and developers to build better cities.”

– Tim Neal, Arcadis

About the CTBUHThe Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) is the world’s leading resource for professionals focused on the inception, design, construction, and operation of tall buildings and future cities. Founded in 1969 and headquartered at Chicago’s historic Monroe Building, the CTBUH is a not-for-profit organization with an Asia Headquarters office at Tongji University, Shanghai; a Research Office at Iuav University, Venice, Italy; and a Chicago Research & Academic Office at the Illinois Institute of Technology. CTBUH facilitates the exchange of the latest knowledge available on tall buildings around the world through publications, research, events, working groups, web resources, and its extensive network of international representatives. The Council’s research department is spearheading the investigation of the next generation of tall buildings by aiding original research on sustainability and key development issues. The Council’s free database on tall buildings, The Skyscraper Center, is updated daily with detailed information, images, data, and news. The CTBUH also developed the international standards for measuring tall building height and is recognized as the arbiter for bestowing such designations as “The World’s Tallest Building.”
