OPENING GENERAL SESSION
KEYNOTE SPEAKER:SHON HOPWOOD
A Law Library Saved My Life Shon Hopwood is an Associate Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center. His unusual legal journey began not at law school, but federal prison, where he learned to write briefs for other prisoners. Two petitions for certiorari he prepared were later granted review by the United States Supreme Court, and he won cases for other prisoners in federal courts across the country. His story has been featured in the New York Times, Washington Post, The New Yorker, and on NPR and 60 Minutes.
Hopwood received a J.D. from the University of Washington School of Law as a Gates Public Service Law Scholar. He clerked for Judge Janice Rogers Brown at the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. He then served as a Teaching Fellow at the Georgetown University Law Center’s Appellate Litigation Program, where he litigated criminal, immigration, civil rights, and federal statutory cases in federal courts of appeals.
Hopwood co-wrote a memoir entitled Law Man: Memoir of a Jailhouse Lawyer, and his scholarship on courts and the criminal justice system has been published in the Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties, Fordham, Washington, and American Criminal Law Review as well as Georgetown Law Journal’s Annual Review of Criminal Procedure. He is the co-owner of Prison Professors L.L.C.

PROGRAMSMust-Have ProgramsThe 2019 Annual Meeting Program Committee (AMPC) solicited—and in some cases, curated—“must-have” programs on timely topics that AALL members have identified as being vital to their professional education.
As you peruse the event listings, look for these programs, shaded in peach.
Supporting Diversity and InclusionCommitment to diversity is one of AALL’s core values. This year’s conference offers numerous opportunities to explore issues related to diversity and inclusion:
• The Search Committee: An Effective Approach to Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity in Library Recruiting (Sunday, 2:30 p.m.)
• Diversity & Inclusion Symposium: Privilege and Power in Legal Environments: Overcoming Barriers to Entry and Advancement (sponsored by LexisNexis) (Sunday, 4:00 p.m.)

• An Eye-Opening Look at the Challenges of Assisting Visually Impaired Patrons with Electronic Legal Research (Monday, 11:00 a.m.)
• Discussion Den: Walk the Talk: Everyday Diversity in the Workplace and AALL (Monday, 3:15 p.m.)
• Artificial Intelligence and Implicit Bias (Tuesday, 8:30 a.m.)
• Storytelling for Empowerment and Change (Tuesday, 8:30 a.m.)
Program RecordingsMost conference programs will be audio- recorded and made available to AALL members online later this summer. (Exceptions are programs whose formats are not conducive to recording, or programs where one or more presenters decline to be recorded.)
AALL Body of KnowledgeAALL’s Body of Knowledge (BoK) sets forth the core domains, competencies, and skills needed by today’s information professionals. Designed to serve as a blueprint for career development by legal information professionals, the BoK also provides the framework for AALL’s educa-tional offerings, including the programs you’ll attend in Washington, DC.
The core domain(s) represented by each program are designated with the following icons:
Professionalism + Leadership at Every Level
Research + Analysis
