Assistant District Superintendent Report 2012-13

I am glad to have had the opportunity to serve as Assistant District Superintendent again

this year. I am grateful to our District Superintendent Dr. Joey Jennings and the District Board

of Administration for affording me this opportunity.

As Assistant District Superintendent I have served on the District Board of

Administration, the Executive Committee, and as the Chairman of the District Board of

Ministerial Development. In addition, it's been my aim to be a support and help to our District

Superintendent through prayer, offering advice when sought, and simply being available.

The more time I spend with Dr. Jennings the more aware I become of his abilities to

humbly lead with a spiritual maturity and wisdom that can only come from abiding in Jesus. He

has a unique ability to blend grace and leadership when holding pastors and churches

accountable to kingdom growth. He is willing to lead and challenge us to grow in all ways that

will increase our effectiveness for the kingdom.

Let us be faithful in prayer for our District Superintendent, for Maribeth, and for their

entire family. As well, let us invite our D.S. to speak into our lives and to spur us on toward love

and good deeds so that we might reach the lost, strengthen the church, and bring glory to God.

Respectfully Submitted,

Rev. Todd E. Glendenning, Assistant District Superintendent

PASTORAL VOTE REVIEW If a favorable pastoral vote is a majority, but less than eighty percent (80%) two-thirds, the DBA shall review pastoral relations and the pastor shall remain only at the recommendation of the DBA. 27. PASTORAL SUPPORT C. Churches who enter into a financial agreement with the pastor may, when needful, make adjustments of his/her obligation quarterly. The salary agreement is with the pastor involved rather than the office filled. Thus, it is suggested that the church's financial obligation to the pastor coincide with the service year (the second Sunday of July) unless otherwise agreed. A full settlement of the pastor's salary shall be made before the time of the Annual District Conference. 30. PASTOR'S SABBATICAL Every Wesleyan church is encouraged to provide a sabbatical leave for its pastor(s) at least every seven years of service. A sabbatical shall be for a minimum of four weeks in excess of vacation time with financial provisions as approved by the local board of administration” (724). 40. GROUP WORKERS COMPENSATION The Western New York District provides a group workers compensation insurance in which all District churches in New York State are required to participate, unless proof of comparable insurance can be shown to the District Board of Administration. The workers compensation insurance premium is to be billed on an annual basis in the fall of the year. Churches shall pay the worker’s compensation premium to the Insurance Treasurer within 60 days of the billing date, unless special consideration has been granted. 42. BUILDING AND REMODELING PLANS B. A church requesting approval of building plans and financing must submit at least three copies of plans for building and financing to the District Superintendent at least 30 days prior to the meeting of the District Board of Administration at which the plans will be considered. The District Board of Administration is authorized to make adjustments to this requirement. 46. NON-PAYMENT OF UNITED STEWARDSHIP FUND AND DISTRICT BUDGETS The pastor, vice-chair and treasurer (or the chairperson of the finance committee if the church has such an office) of a church which does not meet its USF and District Budget obligations shall be required to meet with the District Board of Administration before convening of District Conference to explain the reason for default. Upon the recommendation of the District Board of Administration, a special vote of District Conference shall be required to approve the appointment of a pastor to a local church that has not met its budget requirements for two consecutive years. For a local church that has not met its budget requirements for two consecutive years, the District Board of Administration may recommend a special vote of District Conference to approve the pastor’s appointment. a rhythm for living in which we pay attention to what God is

trying to form in us. It is an attempt to be intentional about the ways we want to grow, and

establishing a realistic pattern for our lives that is conducive to spiritual health and growth.

As part of our district’s ongoing efforts to make disciples, the district asked me last year

to organize a lay-equipping event to mobilize, equip, and deploy lay people.

Nykyforchyn invited our entire district to participate in

Equipping Weekends hosted at the Wesleyan Church of Hamburg in November and March this

year. This event is exactly what we were looking for. In addition to those from Hamburg who led

workshops this year, Pastor Joey Jennings and I also both led workshops at the Spring equipping

event. We are grateful to Pastor Bill and the Hamburg church for their invitation and hospitality.

Men’s Ministry District Report

22012-2013 WESTERN NEW YORK Dr. Joan Lyon, Dr. Joey Jennings, Delegates and Friends,

Thank you for the opportunity to serve you again this past year in the area of Men’s Ministry. It is an enduring passion of mine that we would see the hearts of the fathers to turn to their children and the hearts of the children to turn to their fathers that we would see blessings from heaven instead of curses upon the land.

While Children’s ministry is the quickest path to church growth and to salvation decisions, there is no other ministry with surer long-term spiritual success than connecting men with Christ. Nationwide we see a loss of around 80% of salvation decisions to the ongoing life of the church. When the man of the house is actively involved in his church, however, the statistics reverse – around 86% of his children will be actively involved in the life of the church throughout their adult lives.

This is not news to most of you (as I have shared it with you for several years), but it should begin to move us into intentional ministries for our men to serve Christ significantly.

Unfortunately, there is currently no vision for Men’s ministry on a denominational level, and therefore, no recommended/required ministries or reports for this segment of our local churches’ demographics. Let me recommend two non-denominational ministries that I believe best meet the goals of Men’s Ministries:

1. Christian Service Brigade. This ministry is often incorrectly viewed as a Children’s ministry, where the focus is upon the boys that are participating. The best way to engage in this ministry however, is with the fathers mentoring their own sons through this ministry. This creates a healthy bond between fathers and sons around spiritual things and masculine subjects in general. The most concise way I can describe it is a Christian Boy Scouts. We are blessed in this District to have the regional director for CSB to be our very own Scott Haima from The Wesleyan Church of Hamburg, and their campground is Camp Hickory Hill in Varysburg, NY. CSB Headquarters will be moving to our district this coming year as well. I highly encourage you to pursue starting a local chapter in your church. You can find out more information directly from me or from visiting www.camphickoryhill.org or www.csbministries.org .

2. New Commandment Men’s Ministries. This ministry focuses upon the men of the church fulfilling their responsibility to care for the “widows and orphans” in their distress. It is a monthly commitment of meeting together and serving your Care Receiver in physical ways. Each Care Receiver builds relationships with their team of 4 men as the men care for the needs of their home on a monthly basis. It is amazing what can be accomplished with 96 man hours a year! Herb Reese, the founder of this ministry will be presenting to our district pastors this coming February at our regularly scheduled LDJ mtg. Once again, I highly encourage you to pursue starting this ministry in your local church. You can find out more information directly from me or from visiting www.newcommandment.org .

Men’s ministry is challenging. Men’s ministry is essential for the next generation. I would love to come and speak with your LBA, men’s groups or men’s retreats. I have been sharing with our local churches, speaking at our Iron Sharpens Iron conference, at Camp Hickory Hill men’s events and other denominations’ men’s retreats. Simply email me at [email protected] .

Respectfully Submitted in Christ,

Rev. Jonathan D. Ward

REFRESH (HOUGHTON FAMILY CAMP) DIRECTOR 2012 was a great year for Refresh Camp! Camp attendance increased for the 3rd year in a row. In fact, in the spirit of friendly competition, I thought I would include in my report a list of the top 5 churches in terms of Refresh campers (according to registrations) from this past year:

1. Hess Road (90) 2. Orchard Park (47) 3. Hamburg (40) 4. Little Valley (33) 5. Forestville (28)

As you can see, there is no direct connection between the size of a church and their enthusiasm for Refresh Camp! Churches big and small have come to realize what a great week Refresh can be in the life of their church family. Speaking from my perspective (as a Pastor at Hess Road), I can think of nothing on the church calendar that has as big an impact on raising fellowship levels in our local church than spending the week together at Houghton. Refresh helps change us from a bunch of individual Christians into the family of God. Might your church take advantage of this opportunity and make the top 5 for 2013? Katie (my wife… and the real director) & I would like to document our thanks: We’d like to thank, once again, our camp team. There are more people involved in putting this week together than space provides. We can hardly avoid, however, making mention of certain key leaders. Joey & Maribeth Jennings are always available for our camp meetings and for overall guidance. Tom Kinan was well received as our camp speaker and we thank him so much for coming. Doug Allen served us well, once again, as our worship leader each morning and evening. Nadine Houghton is incredibly helpful on the financial side of things. I’d like to especially thank Melissa Cahill (nursery), Nate & Jessica Kewley (grades 1-3), Al Myers (grades 4-6), and Ray Selden (grades 7-12) for leading so well in their ministry areas. We were thankful to Houghton College for not only providing us a wonderful campus to enjoy, but also accommodating us with some last minute extra lodging space. In the end, everyone that wanted one had a room and an opportunity to be blessed by the Lord and be a blessing to their fellow Western New York District Wesleyans. Much thanks to Becca Crouch for helping to make all of Houghton’s resources available to us and working with us so much throughout the year. Refresh13 will take place July 28th through August 2nd. Dr. Lenny Lucchetti (Wesley Seminary at IWU) will be our evening speaker. Steve Gregg (a Bible Q&A radio show host from California), will teach in the morning Bible study hour. There will be plenty of great seminars, music, afternoon activities, food, etc. In fact, there is so much to say, I’ve run out of space! Check out www.refreshathoughton.com for more information. Registrations are due by July 1st. Respectfully submitted, Rev. Matthew Rose (Refresh Director)

District Director of Children’s Ministries

It has been a year of education for me as I stepped into the role of District Director of Children’s Ministries. Rev. Kevin Murrell graciously returned to our district last summer to manage our 2012 kid’s camp after being called to a new church family. With Kevin’s help I was able to spend the week taking notes, interviewing students about our camp, and looking for ways to help increase our district presence and attendance.

I am pleased to report that forty-two students attended children’s camp in 2012. We had sixteen adult and youth volunteers. The theme for camp was “Finish the Race”. The children enjoyed wonderful times of praise and worship, arts and crafts, games, and activities. Challenging evening messages were presented by four of our district pastors. Many students made decisions to re-dedicate their lives to God and to surrender difficult issues in their lives to God, asking for his help.

It is such blessing to have a dedicated district backing of our children’s camp. However, I was disappointed that out of the 32 churches in our district only six churches had students in attendance at the 2012 camp. One connection I was able to make during the week was that the churches with the most volunteer presence had the highest student attendance rates from their churches. I would like to take this opportunity to encourage both our district pastors and children’s ministry volunteers to consider joining the volunteer staff at camp. Even if it is only for one day or one afternoon, it is an opportunity to make a difference for our kids and the future of God’s church.

Camp dates for 2013 are Sunday, August 11 – Wednesday, August 14 at Camp Mission Meadows on beautiful Chautauqua Lake near Jamestown, New York. Registration is for students who have completed grades 2-6.

This year we have attempted to encourage our district churches to promote our kid’s camp by providing every church with a promotional DVD and regular mailings reminding each church to endorse and encourage attendance at the 2013 District Kid’s Camp. The theme for this year is App Camp. Each Bible lesson is connected with a popular computer application that most of our kids are familiar with in this age of hand-held technology.

I cannot wait to see everyone again this summer, and I hope to make lots of new friends this year! We have a wonderful program planned for the children. I know we will have a great time getting to know God better! Be sure to register your children today!

WNY Youth Ministry Report LoveBuffalo 2012 was an incredible year for ministry. We partnered with two local churches on the Westside of Buffalo to bring the restoring hope of Jesus Christ to hundreds of people. We completed over 25 projects including but not limited to porch repair, painting entire houses, painting a local business, as well as replacing two roofs. This year was also an incredible year for attendance. We had 140 people attend LoveBuffalo — many for the first time! This event is most memorable to us though because at this event we saw both our students and people from the community accept the love of Christ in their hearts for the first time. Even a year later students take pride in what they were able to accomplish for the Kingdom of God through one week at summer camp! Follow ’12 (International Wesleyan Youth Convention): Follow ’12 was held at the Convention Center in Louisville, Kentucky December 28-31, 2012. WNY was well represented by about 100 people, which included nearly 85 teens! The district paid part of the transportation costs for each person so that the experienced could be heightened by traveling together. We joined several thousand teens and adults from all over the world listening to compelling speakers who challenged us all to not be content to simply be in youth group. Many first time decisions were made by students, as well as many who rededicated their lives to following Christ in a very real manner. 2012 District Youth Retreat: Our annual winter retreat was once again held at Camp Hickory Hill and was called Rise Above. This retreat was different from previous years in a few respects. First off, we had Ron Duttweiller as our speaker, teaching on rising above the culture of our world. Our music was led by SameCity, a band based at Houghton College. The activity portion of the retreat was shared by several of the youth staff of district churches. Ten of the district churches sent teens & adults for a total of over 200 people at this event! There were a few churches that were unable to be involved this year due to the high emphasis placed on Follow ’12. Due to this and the fact that we maxed out the camp, we are holding two ‘identical’ retreats on back to back weekends next January 17-19 & 24-26. It is our hope in coming years to find an alternative location that would be large enough to accommodate all of our district youth on one weekend. Further Training: Last year, I said that we wanted to be proactive about hosting training events and we are ready to launch some events this year. We will have a one day training event on October 12 hosted at Houghton Wesleyan Church.

District Director of Education

It’s been a great year at Houghton and I’m pleased to share some of the details here with you in the Western New York District.

First, the chapel program continues to be a valuable part of student life. Some of this year’s highlighted speakers included Craig Gross, who heads a ministry to those trapped in the pornography industry; Kevin Radaker, a professor at Anderson University (IN), who does a one-man play entitled “A Visit from CS Lewis; our own Dr. Joey Jennings; and eleven “Faith Journey” services. During these services, seven students and four faculty shared how God has been working in their lives; these services are a great source of encouragement and a bonding experience for the community.

In the fall, we were pleased to host the Second Annual Faith and Justice Symposium. This year, speakers focused on the demand side of human trafficking. Human trafficking is a very complex issue and speaking to it involves caring for those who are victimized and enslaved, but it also involves helping to reduce the demand: what sorts of spiritual and social realities make owning another person seem so desirable? Chris Heuertz of The Word Made Flesh and Commissioner Christine MacMillan of the Salvation Army spoke to this reality, though a medical incident required Commissioner MacMillan to postpone her trip to Houghton until the spring.

We also were pleased to welcome several other lecturers to Houghton this year. The annual Woolsey Lectures were given by Dr. Roger Olson, a professor at Baylor University and author of Against Calvinism. His talk provided needed Arminian ballast in a Christian culture which is dominated at times by Reformed voices (especially in the blogosphere). We were also pleased to welcome Frederica Mathewes-Green, noted Christian writer, who gave an evening lecture on Orthodox spirituality and a morning talk on current issues in the anti-abortion movement.

In Church Relations, our annual ministry conference this year focused on youth ministry; Dr. Andy Root, a professor of youth ministry at Luther Seminary in Minnesota, came and spoke on the reality of divorce in today’s America. He focused on the way that divorce results in a loss of identity for a child whose parents are now separated. It was also our privilege to host a dinner for Western New York Wesleyan pastors on Sunday evening, January 27 at Russell’s Steakhouse as part of the WNY Pastors’ & Spouses’ retreat.

The Kerr-Pegula project, upgrading the athletic facilities, continues to move forward. This project will strengthen our athletic program, now a provisional member of NCAA Division III. Of course, Houghton has a longstanding tradition of Christian ministry through sport, so these enhanced facilities will certainly help strengthen our athletes’ spiritual impact as well as their athletic abilities.

Finally, our personnel is changing at Houghton. JL Miller and I have worked in Church Relations for the past two years, but we are transitioning out and we are both pleased that Houghton has named Rev. Dr. Steve Dunmire as our Director of Church Relations. JL is continuing his work in Residence Life and I will be serving as Houghton’s Dean of the Chapel. You’re more than welcome to join us for chapel anytime and if you give me a call ahead of time, I’ll be glad to treat you to lunch. In Christ, Mike Jordan

GLOBAL PARTNERS DISTRICT DIRECTOR’S REPORT 2012-2013 Praise God for an ongoing growing relationship with the Source Matelas congregation in Haiti! This year’s team traveled April 12-23. They worked more independently since Mission Director Dan and Joy Irvine were out of the country, and Intern Holly Churchill was there just for the first two days. Haitian Contractor Wilson Celony did a fine job administering the group’s work along with team co-leader Pastor Jon Cole and Contractor Ed Johnson from our team. The other team co-leader Cathy Kelley commented, “The trip was amazing. We were grateful to return to Source Matelas once again. All the interior walls and the window grilles were painted. In the other building forms were put up with rebar and concrete poured. This room will eventually be used to feed the school children. The team sensed a real deepening of relationships with the people.” Cathy and Pastor Rob Engler joined Carl & Maya Gilles at the Saturday children’s ministry in Babaco for their children’s church and assisted in feeding more than 175 children. Also, close to 300 pillow case dresses were distributed for girls at the ministry sites. Trip Pastor Rob Engler provided devotional guides for the team and also preached. Translator David Ortlip has had an ongoing significant ministry with witch doctors, some converting to Christ. (David offers Haitian Creole classes open to district churches every other Friday evening at Tim Horton’s in Arcade for future and returning team members.) Other team members this year included trip doctor-Dr. Bill Carstens and Michelle Faltisko from Orchard Park. Pastor Jon Cole commented on the impressive Haitian co-workers and that “the church was constantly being used. Kids were there every day from early in the morning when the team arrived between 7 and 8 a.m. There’d be choir practice or a men’s Bible study, and the services were well attended both Sundays.” Pastor Jon was grateful to maintain the relationship with this congregation and happy for the work done. Cathy Kelley noted that, “Pastor Jean-Claude showed up one day in his nice clothes and shortly after came in his work-clothes and worked for hours alongside the team.” You are cordially welcomed to consider our next district team trip to Haiti scheduled for February 11-21, 2014. Our district churches support a wide variety of ministries around the world. It’s heartening to see such commitment to service. We desire to expand our faithful support of Global Partners missions in partnership with the international Wesleyan Church. We have special responsibility for those from our district. Executive Office Assistant Maribeth Jennings plans to help us on the new district website to provide links to news from WNY GP workers. Please remember with priority support and prayer those who’ve been called from among us: Stephenie Garey (New Zealand), Chris & Melissa George (Australia), Laura Gross (Zambia), BJ & Michelle Haas (Karis People), Lisa Heath (Czech Republic) & Nicole Schara (Albania). A very special mission fundraiser will be hosted again by Eastern Hills Church. Please mark your calendars for a Ken Medema benefit concert on Friday, September 27. Respectfully, Steve Strand, WNY District Global Partners Director

Ken Medema singing our stories, inspiring hearts We will be privileged to have Ken Medema for a WNY District mission benefit concert at Eastern Hills Wesleyan Church on Friday evening, September 27. For four decades, Ken Medema has inspired people through storytelling and music. Though blind from birth, Ken sees and hears with heart and mind, custom designing every musical moment of his performance with brilliant improvisation that defies description. With an ever-growing circle of followers around the world, Ken's artistry and imagination have reached audiences of 50 to 50,000 people in 49 United States and in more than 15 countries on four continents. From the time he was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1943, Ken has been unable to see with his physical eyes. His sight is limited to distinguishing between light and darkness and seeing fuzzy outlines of major objects. “As a kid I was not widely accepted,” he says, “and I spent a lot of time by myself. Because I have lived with some degree of being different all my life, I have some sympathy for people who have been disenfranchised, whether they have been disabled or politically oppressed or whatever.” Music early became a major component of Medema’s life. “I started banging on the piano when I was five years old,” he says, “making up crazy little fantasies on my mom’s piano. When I was eight years old my parents got me a wonderful teacher who taught me the classics with Braille music and taught me to play by ear.” His teacher also taught him to improvise. “Every time I learned a piece my teacher would tell me, ‘Now, you improvise in that style.’ So music became a second language.” After graduating from high school Medema studied music therapy at Michigan State University in Lansing, where he concentrated heavily on performance skills in piano and voice. He worked as a music therapist in Fort Wayne, Indiana, returned to Michigan State for a master’s degree (1969), then worked for four years as a music therapist at Essex County Hospital in New Jersey. It was while employed there that he began writing and performing his own songs. “I had a bunch of teenagers who were really hurting,” he says, “and I started writing songs about their lives. Then I thought, ‘Why don’t you start writing songs about your Christian life?’ So I started doing that, and people really responded.” In 1973, Medema left his work as a therapist and began a career as a performing and recording artist. He recorded albums for Word and Shawnee Press; then, in 1985 founded Brier Patch Music. Brier Patch is an independent recording, publishing, and performance-booking company with headquarters in Grandville, Michigan. Brier Patch is named after Brier Rabbit’s home in the legendary Uncle Remus stories. “Brier Rabbit lived in a place not comfortable for anyone else,” Medema says, “and we decided to follow him there.” Brier Patch creates musical expressions that celebrate all aspects of the human experience, with an emphasis on spirituality and such universal concerns as peace, justice, and the environment. District Seniors Director It has been my privilege to serve the District as your BYF (55+) Seniors Director this past year. At Refresh Camp 2012, the Senior Luncheon featured Chris and Melissa George. On home assignment from Australia, they shared of the great need for the Church in Perth, and the tremendous work the Lord is doing through them.

A Christmas Concert was held at the North Collins Wesleyan Church. John & Dody Martin, World Vision Artists, were a real music blessing, along with their short video on the sponsorship of needy children. The only drawback was the attendance of only dozen Seniors, yet the good Christmas music, the gracious North Collins hosts, and the good fellowship for those present, made for a truly enjoyable evening.

A trip to see Noah in Lancaster (June 12-13), sponsored by the Eastern Hills Wesleyan Church, was promoted to the District Seniors. Much appreciation to Dick Bennett for the gracious invitation to join them, as well as, the promotional assistance of Maribeth Jennings.

Finally, the upcoming Senior Luncheon will be held at Refresh Camp, July 30, 12:30pm, in the Lennox Dining room of the Houghton Campus Center. The speaker will be Dr. Lenny Luchetti, Associate Professor of Christian Ministry and Proclamation, Wesley Seminary. After the luncheon, 2:15pm, there will a "Hymn-Sing and Organ Demonstration" in Wesley Chapel, by Judy Congdon, Professor of Organ and College Organist, Greatbatch School of Music, Houghton College. Reservations for the Luncheon, sent to the Camp Registrar, are needed by July 1st. More details can be found in the District News.

May the Seniors of our District never be overlooked, underestimated, or simply put on the shelf, but instead always:

District Director of Social Concerns

Two milestone events have served as bookends to my one short year as the District Director of Social Concerns for the WNY District of The Wesleyan Church. Last July, after an unexpected visit to Buffalo General Hospital, I received a Pacemaker implant. At the end of May, I completed 37 years at Houghton College and officially began my retirement. Unfortunately, my service as Director of Social Concerns has consisted primarily of good intentions and few tangible results. However, the milestone events have proved to be occasions for contemplation and reflection. A potentially life threatening illness and the end of a career are both powerful reminders of our mortality. These are times that challenge us to consider questions we too often ignore: What really matters? Who is important: What is worth living for? Near the end of his earthly ministry, Jesus describes the King of glory separating the people who are blessed from those who are cursed, and the selection criteria is all about how they treated the “least of these” (Matthew 25:31-46). It had everything to do with food for the hungry, drink for the thirsty, welcome for the stranger, clothes for the naked, and help for the sick and imprisoned – those “compassion” ministries that all too often are treated as “optional.” And Jesus says, “I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.” God willing, over the course of the next conference year, I hope to see us in the WNY District of the Wesleyan Church wrestle with what it means individually and collectively to engage in “compassion” ministries, assuming that saying the right words and believing the right things, while important, aren’t enough. When it comes to how we treat the poor, Jesus does seem to take it personally. I suggest that we begin by attempting to better understand who we are as Wesleyans, and Robert Black’s and Keith Drury’s recent effort at telling the story is a good place to start. In The Story of The Wesleyan Church, the authors, according to the cover, “trace the church’s heritage from its roots in European and American Methodism, through the 1968 merger of the Wesleyan Methodist and Pilgrim Holiness Churches, all the way to recent historic events.” After a look back at where we have come from, I suggest that we take a fresh look at the gospel and open ourselves to a different vision for our world. The Hole in our Gospel, by Richard Stearns, is one source worth exploring in this effort. And for those engaged in compassion ministries and pursuing a different vision for our world, perhaps we could benefit from a careful reading of When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor … and Yourself, by Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert. I’ll be in touch. Chuck Massey

Wesleyan Women Report

May 22, 2013

To Dr. Joey Jennings, the WNY Conference and my district church family,

It's that time of year again! I can't believe that the year has already passed.

This will be the second time I have revisited the adventures of WNY

Wesleyan Women and the way God has moved among us. Time seems to

have flown, but so much has happened.

I have an incredible team of ladies to work with who are very dedicated to

God and the women of our district. Martha Duda is still diligently

continuing the work of WKFM liaison. Robin Schara has continued to get

the details down; she doesn't miss a thing! Nadine Houghton tirelessly keeps

track of our finances. We have recently added Daniella Shambach to the

team, and she is already knee deep in retreat planning . I cannot express in

words the blessing and joy these ladies bring to me through their ministry

and heart for women.

Here is our year in review! Back in July 2012 we hosted a Princess Day at

Refresh 2012 for women and girls of all ages. We got to listen to Pastor

Megan Cusumano about how we are all children of the King. We also got to

dress up in our finest and have a royal feast. In November 2012 we scheduled

a sight-seeing bus trip with a service project. God had bigger plans, though!

We partnered with New Hope Family Worship Center to provide hurricane

relief to many families in the Brooklyn area. The ladies brought donations so

numerous that we stashed our small luggage in the overhead compartments

and used all the undercarriage for the food, blankets, water and coats we

received for donation. Just recently, in May 2013, we sponsored a Glimpses

Page 33: Conference Packet 2013 - Brookside Wesleyan Church · 2019-07-24 · 152th Annual Conference of the Western New York District Agenda Saturday, June 15, 2013, 9:00 AM First Session

of Yesteryear: Bridal Attire through the Eras where there were many bridal

gowns on loan, going back more than 100 years, being modeled. It included

a brunch and a speaker who spoke on being the Bride of Christ.

We have some exciting new adventures planned for this coming year. First,

you won't want to miss the Amazing Race: Women of the Bible at Refresh

2013! Will have teams of women facing challenges similar to what women

of the Bible faced regularly. We are bringing back the district retreat

November 7-9! We will be taking a look at Ruth and Naomi as we get away

at the beautiful Asbury Retreat Center on Silver Lake. In March 2014 we

will be hosting a national webcast for women's leadership. Andrea Summers,

Wesleyan Women headquarters director, and numerous other speakers will

be sharing on matters pertaining to women's ministry and how to be an

effective leader where God has placed you. We are so excited to be able to

open this up to all of the Wesleyan churches in the U.S.!

Thank you for the great opportunity to represent the women of our district

and to be trusted with the leadership that comes with it. I am honored and

humbled.

Sincerely,

Ashley Ward

WESLEYAN KIDS FOR MISSIONS

Wesleyan Kids for Missions continues its purpose to win kids to Christ by pursuing a relationship with Jesus Christ through His Word that will guide them as Christians through a lifelong journey of service at home with a vital interest in missions abroad. The goal of WKFM is that kids will learn to trust Jesus as their Savior, to share Jesus’ love with others, to care for people of different cultures, to hide God’s Word in their hearts, to tell others about Jesus, to pray and correspond with missionaries and their kids, and to become missionaries where they are. This 2012-2013 year our Western New York District had six churches participating in Wesleyan Kids for Missions with a total of 95 active members (children through sixth grade paying one penny per week, 52 cents) and 55 honorary members (teens and adults paying a membership of 52 cents or more).
