ThispresentaHonsummarisesfindingsfromatwoyearNewZealandGovernment-fundedstudyintothenatureofthinkingskillsstudentsapplywhenengagedincodingacHviHes.ItusedaninnovaHverecordingtoolinstalledonclasssetsofiPadstocapturevideoandaudiodatawhile5and6yearoldstudentswerecompleHngarangeofcodingtasksthatwereintegratedintoaGeometrytopic,usingScratchJnr.DatawereanalysedagainstathinkingskillsmodelbasedonKrathwohl’s(2002)adaptaHonofBloom’sTaxonomy(cogniHvedomain)andBrennanandResnick’s(2012)frameworkforevaluaHngcomputaHonalthinking,todiscovertheextenttowhichcodingprovidedausefulmeansofbuildinggeneralandhigherorderthinkingskills.DatawillbepresentedanddiscussedhighlighHngkeyoutcomesfromthestudy,andusefulguidanceprovidedforteacherswanHngtoexplorecodingasameansofbuildingthinkingcompetenciesintheirstudents.

Dr.DalePaQersonisacomputerscienHstandlecturerinDigitalDesign,VisualizaHonandInteracHon.Dalehasworkedinthefieldofcomputersciencebothcommercially,ineducaHonandresearchformorethan20years(focusingon3DcomputergraphicsanditsapplicaHons).Dale’sprimaryareasofinterestincludehumancomputerinterfacedesign,VR&AR,3DcomputeranimaHon,visualeffectsandgames.DalealsohasstrongresearchinterestsincompuHngasappliedinbio-medicalapplicaHons(e.g.,scienHficvisualizaHon,appliedgames&learning,arHficialintelligence).
TonyGrayhasbeenChairoftheAUCsincelate2010.Heisasocwaredeveloperandeducatorwithover25yearsofexperienceprovidingITsupportintheUniversitysector,andisco-chairoftheAUC'sothertwoconferences–/dev/worldforsocwaredevelopersandXWorldforsystemadministrators.TonyalsowritesforO'ReillyMediaontheSwicprogramminglanguage.

ThehistoryoftheAUCisoneofadapHngtochange,andin2013wereinventedourselvesasanot-for-profitassociaHonwithnoformalrelaHonshipwithApple.OurmissionistosupportandbuildcommuniHesaroundtheuseofAppletechnologiesbysharingexperience,insightsandknow-howamongstmembers,developingpeopleasleaders,andinspiringandfosteringinnovaHveuseoftechnology.
