Helsinki

Helsinki, the capital of Finland, has an attractive and unique character which comes not only from its colourful past but also from its proximity to the sea: the city centre is built on islands which means that the sea is always close. Dubbed as the ‘Daughter of the Baltic Sea,’ Helsinki’s identity has been formed by cultural influences from both Russia and Europe and even today it has a role as a gateway between the east and west.

The top must-see attractions include The Archipelago, Ateneum Art Museum, The Cathedral (on the cover picture), Esplanade Park, Seurasaari Open-Air Folklore Museum, Suomenlinna Sea Fortress (a World Heritage site), Temppeliaukio Church (built inside a rock), Uspenski Orthodox Cathedral.

Other attractions include Helsinki Zoo, Linnanmäki Amusement Park, Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, National Museum of Finland, Sea Life Helsinki and Senate Square.

Hotel Scandic Intercontinental is ideally situated on one of the main avenues of Helsinki, opposite the Finlandia Concert Hall and just a short stroll (or a 3-minute tram journey!) from the city centre, where a variety of quality restaurants, trendy bars, museums, galleries and shopping streets can be found. Helsinki is a pocket-sized metropolis so everything is close-by and the comprehensive tram system is cheap and easy to use.
