Conejo Valley Fly Fisher’s Annual Christmas-Holiday “Potluck” 2017
TAKE A HIKE BUDDY
Most fly fishermen go in to hibernation in the late fall and winter which I think is a
mistake. Of course one can always make the trek to the eastern Sierra to fish some of the
streams that are open year round, but there are opportunities in our own back yard.
Angeles National Forest and Los Padres National forest both offer some fun local
trout fishing especially in late winter and early spring when we've had our "rainy season". If
nothing else take the time to hike some of the local creeks and rivers (with fly rod in hand of
course) and see what might be lurking there.
Trout metabolisms necessarily slow down in the winter and many times you will
have to make several additional drifts through deeper holes to entice them, but the rewards
can be most satisfying.
So take a look at some of our smaller local creeks and rivers and though the fishing might
be a little skinny relish in the thought that you may be too after covering a few miles.

by Charley Beals / Repost from November
I left Thousand Oaks about 5am Saturday and arrived in Kernville just after 8am, caught Breakfast at the Kernville Golf Course then went to Kern River Fly Shop – spoke to Guy Jean and Kimberley about what fish activity I could expect – they were both really helpful, great shop – the report was “BWO hatch about One pm-ish lasting about 2 hrs, afternoons are better than mornings”. Guy Jean looked over my fly box and suggested #18 Olive WD40. I bought some flies, had some coffee and went fishing. (Kern Slot - photo #1) Just like Guy had suggested – I pulled into a dirt parking lot about 5 miles north of town, rigged up a double nymph on 5x - #16 olive hares ear on top and #18 Olive WD40 on 6x below the hares ear. The boulders were very slippery so bring your staff. River was running about 250 cfs – sunny sky and no wind temps mid 70’s no crowds. I had a good day netting 6 fish, all rainbow trout 12-16 inches. Although I changed the top fly many times – they all fell to the Ol-ive WD40. (photo #2) The hatch where I was at 1-3 mediocre at best – no fish rising were I was but I didn’t know the river. The last spot I fished looked very good, I only landed one – there was sever-al stonefly nymphs clinging to boulders in the eddy’s at water level – they were all about the size of a small paperclip. On the way out of town I grabbed a sandwich at the Freemont Deli – the owner Alyssa was super nice and the sandwich was A++ !! I like the Kern area – lots of options for fishing – get out there! - Charley

Hello Conejo Valley Fly Fisher members,
– I have put together the framework for a schedule of
outings for the club and I would appreciate any feed-
back as I solidify the dates.
– If you know of a productive month to visit a certain
destination then please let me know.
– My goal is to have at least one local outing per quar-
ter and add in one to two “other than mammoth” trips
in the better fishing months.

A DAY IN THE EASTERN SIERRA
WITH CHARLES JARDINE
JANUARY 13 & 14
Don’t miss this great opportunity to fish with UK angling
legend Charles Jardine on the Lower Owens river.
Charles will teach techniques that he has learned
through many years of guiding and competitive angling.
The classes will cover Euro nymphing, long leader up-
stream nymphing and reading the water. One of the
world’s great instructors, Charles’ classes are full of good
humor and great advice. They will be from 9.00 am till
3.00 pm (unless the hatch comes on) with a break for
lunch and will be limited to six anglers allowing time for
personal instruction. More info here
FFI is proud to announce that the fall issue of Flyfisher is now
available online and has been mailed to those who have a
subscription for the printed copy. The issue is "a real piece of
literature", said Len Zickler, President/CEO. "We have strived to
cover all fish, all waters in the last two issues and we feel we have
accomplished that goal in this recent issue." There is something
for every fly fisher in this issue! Click here to read or

CA SPORTFISHING LEAGUE In recent years, the State of California has passed laws and regulations denying recreational anglers prime fish-ing spots in the Pacific Ocean, and California lakes and streams. In order to defend Californians’ access to coastal waters and lakes, millions of dollars have been spent in legal battles with limited success. This is why sportfishing clubs and small businesses dependent on fish-ing have joined together under the banner of the Califor-nia Sportfishing League so that we can influence the out-come of public policy.

Trout in the Classroom training Saturday, November 4th, was
held at Earths Magnet School in Thou-
sand Oaks.
We had 26 teachers attend from various school districts around SoCal; mainly Ventura county schools. From
CDFW we had Jennifer O'Brien, Trout in the Classroom coordinator from Regions 5 South Coast Santa Bar-
bara to San Diego Counties and Hillary Grez from the inland areas Riverside , San Bernardino, Imperial
counties. Jennifer and Hillary travel great distances to put on these classes along with picking up eggs from
Fillmore hatchery and distributing them across SoCal . Hats off to them!
From the FFI was Rich Bollinger, from Conejo Valley FF, Gary Scott, CVFF TIC coordinator,
Judy Bollinger, educator and Jennifer Fry, educator.
All of the above names had specific areas that they gave teachers training on. Gary Scott, lead instructor;
CDFW Jenifer O'Brien rules, laws and biological facts; Hillary Grez, lessons in Project Wild Aquatic, a sepa-
rate class that we integrated this time into TIC training. Teachers loved it!
Judy Bollinger and Jennifer Fry gave insight on how they teach TIC in their classrooms; lesson plans, pro-
jects ie: art, language, science. Rich Bollinger trained the teachers on the biological process of a cold water
trout aquarium and how to set up, care for and trouble shoot problems that may come up. Jenifer O'Brien
and Rich Bollinger attended a science seminar held at the Ventura County Schools office. There were at
least a hundred teachers in attendance. Trout in the Classroom had a booth, along with other programs from
around the county such as National Parks Channel Islands and Santa Monica Mountains, among serval oth-
ers. TIC booth was jammed with teachers!
