Our Programs Early Childhood

Parents Reaching Out receives support

from the Family Infant Toddler (FIT)

program to work with families of young

children and service providers to

provide assistance and information

about the importance of natural

environments that help children thrive.

We also have a liaison in the Neonatal

Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the

University of New Mexico Hospital. Helping families understand the

services they are receiving is important. As children grow we help

families build advocacy skills as they access different community

resources.

Health Care

Parents Reaching Out is the New Mexico

Family to Family Health Information

Center. We encourage the development

of effective partnerships between

parents and health care professionals.

We work with health care providers,

state agencies, programs for medical

trainees, and with other community

organizations to promote understanding

of the value of family/patient-centered, culturally competent care.

We also partner with families and other organizations to represent the

voice of families in New Mexico on issues related to children with

disabilities and special healthcare needs. We want to contribute to

building access to care, increasing insurance coverage, improving

service delivery, and other important healthcare policy issues.

agencies Connect families to community resources that address their

needs Understand the complexities of Special Education in New

Mexico and to become empowered contributors to their child’s educational plan

Understand the Common Core State Standards Advocate for their child using a collaborative approach

Family Support Families with a child who has a disability have special concerns and often need a great deal of information; particularly, information about the disability of their child, school services, therapies, local policies, transportation issues, medical facilities, and more. Many families find it very useful to join a parent group or to participate in Parent to Parent matches,

which is what these groups are all about! The staff is available to support families by helping them connect to other families that are in similar situations. This may be based upon diagnosis, disability, chronic illness, school, community issues, health care, and any other concerns.
