Solution
1. Select the Sag-Tension-Temperature chart for AAC conductorat stringing table T220, as shown below.
2. Plot the MES length of 108m on the horizontal axis – Point A.Always ‘enter’ the chart from the MES.
3. Trace upwards vertically to the 50°C curve – Point B.
4. Now we have established the tension in the line, which we canread by tracing a horizontal line across to the tension scale forMOON at the left – Point C. Reading from the chart, thetension in the conductor is 1.53kN.
5. To determine the sag, we now plot the actual span length of74m on the horizontal axis – Point D.
6. Trace upward to the horizontal line showing tension, at PointE. Looking at the sag contours on the chart, we note that thesag is slightly less than 1.5m – 1.49m say.

AERIAL BUNDLED
CABLE
A type of overhead cable available in both LV and HVcomprising XLPE insulated compacted aluminium phaseconductors laid together to form a ‘bundle’. HVABCincorporates a catenary wire for extra support and earthingand either a metallic or nonmetallic screen. LVABC is selfsupporting.
In some cases, a HDPE oversheath is incorporated forimproved abrasion resistance.
AERIAL STAY A staywire erected between two poles or between a poleand a bollard.
AUSTRALIAN HEIGHT
DATUM
A level surface based on the mean sea level at thirty tidegauges around Australia’s mainland coast.

CONTRIBUTION
A payment which an electricity authority requires acustomer to make before starting work on a capital (new, oradding to the value of the authority’s assets) project onbehalf of the customer. The payment may fully or partlycover the cost of the works.
CLINOMETER An instrument for measuring slope.
CHAINAGE The distance from a datum along the centreline of aroadway. This term and offset are used to make referenceto points on roadworks plans.
CIRCUIT BREAKER Mechanical switching device capable of making, carryingand breaking currents under normal conditions.Capable of making, carrying for a specified time andbreaking currents under specified abnormal conditions (eg.short circuits).Primary control is via external protection relays and manualoverrides.Circuit breakers are normally ground mounted.A circuit breaker (fitted with automatic reclose and externalprotection relays) is operationally similar to a recloser.Circuit breakers may occur in ring main units. COMBINATION LINKS A combination of links that, close the through circuit andthen isolate the apparatus in one sequenced action, or viceversa (eg. Live bypass for single-phase regulators).

COMMON USE POLE A pole owned by either the electricity authority or someother authority (e.g., Telstra) used by both parties tosupport their mains.
CONDEMNED POLE A pole assessed as unsuitable to remain in service,typically due to diminished strength from white-ant attack,below-ground rot or some other cause.
CONDUCTOR A wire or other form of conducting material suitable forcarrying current.

DISCONNECT LINK 1∅, air insulated (normally), switch used to isolate linesand apparatus from the network. A disconnect link shall beeasily operable as a switch. It shall not require unbolting(or otherwise complex disconnection), of electricalconnections. Refer Link.

SUBSTATION
A substation that transforms or converts electrical energyfrom a higher voltage network to a secondary distributionnetwork (see also “Padmounted Transformer”).

DROP OUT FUSE
Drop Out fuse (DO) is a fuse where the fuse carrier dropsinto an open position, after the fuse has operated. Use ofthe term EDO shall be discontinued.
DUCT A pipe or closed passage formed underground or in astructure and intended to receive one or more cables whichmay be drawn through them.
EARTHING (Earths) The process of connecting components of electricity supplynetworks to ground to prevent dangerous voltagesoccurring on components which may be contacted bypersons, or which may be damaged by the voltages.Usually applied to rods, metallic electrodes or a group ofinterconnected rods and the wire making connection to thedistribution system component that is ‘earthed’.
EASEMENT A strip of land registered on the title deed in the office ofthe Registrar of Titles allowing access or other rights to apublic body or party other than the owner of the parcel ofland on which the easement exists.

CHARGE
A charge electricity authorities apply to customers to coverthe cost of service cable and installation longer than themaximum length provided free of charge.
EXCAVATION NOTICE A form electricity authorities use to obtain approval toexcavate a local or public authority footpath to erect polesor install underground cables.
FEEDER A circuit (normally HV) emanating from a substation fordistributing electric power.
FIELD BOOK A notebook used to record site survey data (e.g.,distances, bearings, angles, slope readings andtopographical features).
FILL The depth of earth to be deposited and compacted to raiseexisting ground levels to proposed ground levels at aparticular point in a roadworks or other constructionproject.

ALIGNMENT
A distance relative to the edge of a footpath (usually theproperty boundary side) used to describe the position of anunderground service or pole.

GUARANTEE A contract signed by a prospective customer whichguarantees an electricity authority a set sum of moneyannually for a fixed term to supply electricity, regardless ofwhether energy is used or not.

HEIGHT STICK An extendable stick used for measuring the heights ofconductors and poles.
HIGH VOLTAGE (HV) Electrical potential in the range of 1000V to 33kV.
ISOLATOR SWITCH 1∅ or 3∅, enclosed switching device utilising air, oil, SF6,or vacuum Insulation mediums. Capable of making,carrying and breaking currents to specified levels undernormal conditions. LINK PILLAR A pillar containing isolating links or switch fuses allowingthe joining together or disconnection of two or more LVdistribution circuits. Commonly found in URD estates.

An enclosed, non-air insulated, pole mounted switch withfull load break capability but no inbuilt protection functions.

PROFILE A longitudinal cross-section of ground or a powerline usedto check clearances and select optimum pole positions.
RANGE ROD A painted staff or rod surveyors use to maintain a straightline or mark point.

RECLOSER 1∅, or 3∅ protective device able to sense over currents, totime and interrupt overcurrents, and to recloseautomatically to re-energise line sections. Line sectionswith “permanent faults” may be isolated after a set numberof operations. Reclosers have hydraulic or electroniccontrols and use oil, SF6 or vacuum interrupting mediums.Primary control is internal or via manual overrides.Reclosers are normally pole mounted. REDUCED LEVEL The elevation of a point above an adopted datum relativeto mean sea level.
REGULATOR A regulating transformer in which one winding is intendedto be connected in series with a circuit in order to alter itsvoltage and the other winding is an energising winding.
RESOURCE ESTIMATE A list of materials, labour and other requirements for aconstruction project.
RING MAIN UNIT Switchable device containing a combination of switchfuses, and/or isolators, and/or circuit breakers. Typically aHV device connected to a transformer.

SAG The vertical distance between an overhead conductor’smidspan height and the chord drawn between theattachment points of the conductor.
SAG TEMPLATE A transparent template shaped like a boomerang used todraw profiles of overhead mains conductor spans.

A graph of sags and tensions applying to similar conductortypes over a range of span lengths and temperatures.
SECTIONALISER Switching device that automatically isolates faultedsections of line from the distribution system. Normallyapplied in conjunction with a recloser or circuit breaker.Sectionalizer has no fault interrupting capability. It countsoperations of recloser/circuit breaker during faultconditions. After a fixed number of counts the sectionalizeropens while the reloser/circuit breaker is open.
Sectionalizer is available in 1∅ & 3∅ versions withhydraulic or electronic counting mechanisms.
SERVICE The electricity authority’s wires (running overhead orunderground) connecting its mains to the customer’spremises.
SERVICE PILLAR/PIT An enclosure where underground supply to a customer’spremises is connected to the secondary distributionnetwork through a primary fuse.

SPAN (Bay) The horizontal distance between the pole attachmentpoints of an overhead conductor.
SPANNING LIMITATION The maximum span distance and deviation angle that maybe used for a given conductor and construction in anoverhead powerline.
SPUR LINE A short radial electricity line.
STATION A site at which a survey measurement is taken.
STRENGTH RATING The maximum allowable pole tip load that may be appliedto a pole by both conductors and wind forces on the poleitself.
STRAIN SECTION A section of overhead powerline between fixed strainpoints (shackle or termination constructions).
STRINGING TABLE A table providing stringing tensions and/or sags for anominated conductor over a range of span lengths andconductor temperatures.

AGREEMENT
An agreement between a supply authority and a developer(subdivider) covering conditions of supply to a subdivision.

TELEMETER (OpticalRange Finder)
A handheld optical instrument which measures the heightof objects (conductors etc.) by focusing two images of theobject in the field of view until they are aligned. Thedistance between the instrument and object is read from ascale on the instrument. The height of the instrumentabove ground is added to the reading to determine theobject’s height.
TIP LOAD Equivalent mechanical load applied to a pole tip byattached conductors or stays.
TOPOGRAPHICAL MAP A map or plan showing details of the natural and manmadefeatures of the country (e.g., hills, rivers, forests, swamps,roads and railway bridges etc.).
TRANSFORMER A device that transfers electrical energy from one circuit toanother, via a magnetic field that links the circuits.
TRENCHING Trenches excavated by an electricity authority or developerto install underground cables.
TRUNDLE WHEEL A device used to measure linear distances.

A map or plan detailing the underground distributionsystem service (e.g., pillar and pit positions, cable pitpositions, duct sizes and configurations and cable sizes).

WAVE SAGGING A way of determining conductor sag by timing the return ofa wave generated at one end.
WAYLEAVE A written authority which the owner/occupier of a propertyuses to authorise an electricity authority to construct,maintain and clear vegetation for electrical lineinstallations.

WORKS PLAN(Construction Drawing)
An instruction in the form of a drawing or plan detailing theconstruction requirements to carry out nominated capital ormaintenance works on the electricity distribution system.
