Gympie region 2017 A competition for writers and illustrators of all ages Proudly sponsored by Conditions of Entry All entries must be the original work of entrants and must not have been published, or have won a prize in any literary competition prior to the closing date, Thursday 31 August 2017. A short story (excluding the G150 short story) may be of any length up to a maximum 5000 words in the adult section, and a maximum of 3000 words in the children’s section. The maximum length for the short story for the G150 short story competition is 3000 words. A poem may be of any length up to a maximum of 200 lines in the adult section, and a maximum of 100 lines in the children’s section. A picture book must be no longer than 500 words and suitable for 3 to 7 year olds. Choose any medium e.g. paint, pencil, collage, photos, etc. Writing and illustrating can be done by different people. Choose your own topic, theme, or style. Picture book entrants may choose any medium, e.g. paint, crayon, collage, photos, etc. Entries MUST be clear and easy to read and should be: • typed on white A4 paper • typed in Times New Roman, font size 12, left justified • stapled in top left-hand corner • without illustrations • with each page titled and numbered. GympieRegional Libraries

Gympie Regional Libraries will be conducting the annual Gympie Region Literary Awards in October 2017.

One of the aims of this literary competition is to expose the many hidden talents of people in the Gympie region and surrounding area which may otherwise go unrecognised, and to encourage the writing and illustrating talents of all who choose to participate.

The competitions are open to children 10 to 17 years and adults 18 and over, who reside in the Gympie Regional Council area and surrounding council regions. Entrants are free to choose the topic or subject matter they wish to write about. Conditions of entry are outlined on the back.

All material relating to the Gympie Regional Literary Awards will be on display for your perusal. The entries will be sent away for judging during the week after the closing date. The independent judge will return the entries later in September.

Winners will be announced and presented with their awards at the Gympie Region Literary Awards night in October.

Finger food and fruit punch will be served prior to guest speaker talks. Representatives from Bendigo Bank will be on hand to present the awards. The evening concludes with tea, coffee and cake in the library foyer.

Entries will be displayed at the Gympie Library. Entries may be reproduced for local media and library promotional purposes.

There will be a first, second and third prize awarded in each category: Short Story, Poetry and Picture Book.

First Prize: $200 for adults and $150 for children

Second Prize: $150 for adults and $100 for children

Third Prize: $100 for adults and $50 for children

Our judge for 2017 is Richard Yaxley.

Richard is the author of Drink the Air, the winner of the 2010 Queensland Premier’s Young Adult Literary Award, its sequel Spring Rain and most recently Joyous and Moonbeam, which was shortlisted for the 2014 West Australian Premier’s Awards.

He has written extensively in educational texts such as Shorts, Short Shorts and No Big Dramas and also writes for adults, most notably with The Rose Leopard.

He is a poet and playwright, and has been the recipient of various grants and fellowships, including a May Gibbs Literature Trust Creative Time Fellowship in 2015.

To celebrate the 150th birthday of Gympie we are delighted to announce an extra short story category for 2017. Entries for the “G150 Short Story Competition” should conform to the following criteria:

In 3000 words or less, write a short story set in the Gympie Region. You can use either a contemporary or historical setting. There are no age categories. You can enter both short story competitions but with different stories. Entries in the G150 Short Story Competition will be printed and bound as part of the G150 celebrations.

First prize: $200 | Second prize: $150 | Third prize: $100
