Define “Open”… Open Educational Resources (OER)

“Teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and re-purposing by others. Open

educational resources include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials, or

techniques used to support access to knowledge.” -William and Flora Hewlett Foundation

Page 7: Concurrent Session 1: Resources for Open Education â•fi

UMass Boston Libraries and OER | March 13, 2015

Define “Open”… Open Access (OA)

“Free availability on the public internet, permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles…without financial, legal, or technical

barriers…The only constraint on reproduction and distribution, and the only role for copyright in this

domain, should be to give authors control over the integrity of their work and the right to be properly

acknowledged and cited.” -Budapest Open Access Initiative

Page 8: Concurrent Session 1: Resources for Open Education â•fi

UMass Boston Libraries and OER | March 13, 2015

Define “Open”… What OA means for course materials:

No cost, available online, free of most licensing restrictions

What OA does NOT mean for course materials:

No peer review/editorial process, lower quality

Page 9: Concurrent Session 1: Resources for Open Education â•fi

UMass Boston Libraries and OER | March 13, 2015

Define “Open”…

OA Gold Freely available online

OA Green Self-archiving in institutional repositories

(Currently 80% of journals allow this type of OA)

- Peter Suber

Page 10: Concurrent Session 1: Resources for Open Education â•fi

UMass Boston Libraries and OER | March 13, 2015

▸ Each Faculty member grants to UMass Boston nonexclusive permission to make available his or her scholarly articles and to exercise the copyright in those articles for the purpose of open dissemination.

▸ The university waives application of the license for a particular article or delays access for a specified period of time upon express direction by a Faculty member. No questions asked.

▸ The faculty member or researcher provides an electronic copy of the author’s final version of each article to the library.
