UP NEXT: REGULAR SEASON FINALE AT SMSU/USFConcordia (16-10 overall, 12-8 NSIC) hits the road for the fi nal time in the 2014-15 season, with NSIC Sanford Health Tourna-ment action starting next week on campus.

The Golden Bears’ regular season fi nale weekend is at South-west Minnesota State (12-14, 8-12 NSIC) on Friday and at Sioux Falls (8-18, 5-15 NSIC) on Saturday.

The Golden Bears are 4-6 on the road this year, but are 4-2 in their last six road games. SMSU is 6-6 at home on the year, but are just 1-4 in their last fi ve home games. Sioux Falls has a 4-7 home record but owns a 4-game home losing streak.

HOME TOURNAMENT GAME COMING TO ST. PAULThe Golden Bears have offi cially clinched an NSIC Sanford Health Tournament fi rst round home game and are currently attempting to hold off Upper Iowa for the South Division’s third seed. Concordia leads UIU by a game with two games left, but the Peacocks hold the fi rst tiebreaker (head-to-head).

While Concordia travels to SMSU and Sioux Falls, Upper Iowa will host #2 Augustana (25-1, 19-1 NSIC) and Wayne State (7-19, 4-16 NSIC).

With the present seeding, Concordia would host North Division sixth seed U-Mary (8-16, 6-14 NSIC), with Upper Iowa hosting North fi fth seed Minot State (14-12, 9-11 NSIC).

The NSIC Tournament fi rst round games are Wed., Feb. 25.

SUCCESS AGAINST THE NORTH DIVISIONThe Golden Bears have fared well against the North Division in 2014-15. Concordia has swept two weekends, one home (vs SCSU & UMD) and one away (at UMC & BSU) and split last week-end on the road at MSU Moorhead (L) and Northern State (W).

SIGNATURE VICTORIES DEFINING COACH JAMES’ 1ST YEARConcordia has been collecting key victories this season, with key in-region wins over Lindenwood on a neutral fl oor, Minne-sota State and St. Cloud State at home and at Northern State.

The four teams are all ranked in the top-10 of the fi rst NCAA Central Region Rankings, released by the NCAA. The Golden Bears hold a 4-4 record against regionally-ranked opposition.

Lindenwood is now 16-9 overall and 11-5 in the MIAA, Minne-sota State was #10 in the country at the time Concordia won on Dec. 20 and is now 20-6 overall and 15-5 in the NSIC, St. Cloud State is 16-10 overall and 12-8 in the NSIC and Northern State is 19-7 overall and 13-7 in the NSIC.

COACH JAMES BIG 1st YEAR WINS, BY THE NUMBERS• 4-4 against NCAA Central Region ranked teams• 1 win against NABC Top-25 (#10 Minnesota State, Dec. 20)• 1st win at Northern State in 18 trips to Aberdeen • 6th all-time win over NSU in 31 meetings• 1st home win over Winona State in 18 home meetings • 4th all-time win over WSU in 45 meetings• 6th win in 23 contests against St. Cloud State• 6th win in 22 games against Minnesota State• 8th win in 32 contests against SMSU • 7-game losing streak to Mustangs snapped

NON-CONFERENCE SUMMARYThe Golden Bears went 4-2 in non-conference play, splitting with a pair of MIAA in-region contests, picking up three home wins against non-Division II opponents by wide 21-plus point margins and falling in a nail-biter at Division I Milwaukee.

The early season slate put the team on a neutral fl oor against Emporia State (L) and Lindenwood (W) in Las Vegas, gave them three home court tune-ups with big wins over Crossroads, Northland and North Central along with a challenging DI road game in which they held a lead for most of the fi rst half and by as many as 11 at Milwaukee.

Through it all, only one team (North Central) managed to shoot 40.0% from the fl oor, as the Rams shot exactly 40.0% in the non-conference fi nale on Tuesday night, and Milwaukee’s 64 points was a non-conference high as the Golden Bear defense was consistent across all three levels of opposition. With the strong defense came wide rebounding margins, winning the rebound-ing battle handily against everyone except Milwaukee.

Joey James became the ninth head men’s basketball coach at Concor-dia-St. Paul in April, 2014

James spent last season as interim head coach at the University of South Dakota where he had been an assistant for 11 seasons prior to his interim appointment. James also played for the Coyotes from 1997-99.

“This is an exciting day for Concordia basketball, our campus commu-nity and the Twin Cities basketball scene,” said Rubbelke. “Joey possess-es the character, commitment, desire and basketball acumen to take Golden Bear basketball to a championship level. We are ecstatic to land a coach of Joey’s caliber and are looking towards a bright future with him on the sidelines.”

In his interim season, James and the Coyotes went 12-18 overall and 6-8 in the Summit League. USD played to a 10-3 record at home in the DakotaDome, had a fi ve-game midseason winning streak and a pair of three game winning streaks (one early, one late).

“I am very excited about the opportunity to lead the men’s basketball program at Concordia University,” said James. “I would like to thank Tom and the search committee for believing in me and having the confi dence in me as their men’s basketball coach. My staff and I will work extremely hard to make Concordia a program that competes every night in the highly competitive NSIC. I’m eager to get started and look forward to the challenges of building a championship caliber program on and off the court.”

While James joins Concordia after serving as a Division I head coach at USD, he also has a strong Division II background prior to the Coyotes making the jump. In his fi rst fi ve seasons as a USD assistant, the Coyotes reached the NCAA Divi-sion II Tournament. In his 12 total seasons as a USD coach, the program produced a 225-137 (.622) record as James was involved in all aspects of USD basketball. He also helped lead the team to seven-straight 20-plus win along with two conference championships.

The Bellevue, Neb. native averaged 24 points per game as a prep at Bellevue West High School before attending Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluff s. He averaged 15 points as a sophomore and transferred to South Dakota. He averaged eight points as a junior in his fi rst year with the Coyotes, leading the team to a 19-8 season. During James’ senior season, South Dakota fi nished 23-7, won the North Central Conference championship and reached the NCAA Tournament.

James graduated from South Dakota in 2001 with a degree in recreational science. He earned his master’s degree in athletic administration from USD in 2003.

James and his wife, Jena, have a son, Jaylen (12), and two daughters, Jayci (8) and Jayna (7).

Assistant Coach notes:

Top assistant Eric Johnson coached with James last season in his interim 2013-14 season at USD, and previously served as a graduate assistant at USD from 2008-10 under legendary former Coyotes coach Dave Boots while James was on staff ... Johnson also coached for two seasons at Division II New Mexico Highlands, a strong program in the Rocky Moun-tain (RMAC) ... he played collegiately at the Division II level in the NSIC at Wayne State where he was a two-time captain, earning a degree in 2008 from WSC with a master’s from USD in 2010.

Third year assistant Andrew Kuderer just completed his graduate assistant role with the program and remained with the staff when James was brought in ... he played for the Golden Bears, going from a walk-on who earned playing time as a true freshman to a two-year starter and senior captain before graduation.

First year graudate assistant Roman Gentry joined Concordia after two years as an assistant varsity coach in his home state of Iowa after completing his playing career with two years at USD under Boots with James and Johnson also on staff during his playing career ... Gentry was an All-Great West performer at the Division I level after transferring in from Milwaukee, where he suited up in 36 games with four starts over two years with the Panthers.

Josh Baker begins his second year as a student assistant on the Golden Bear staff after spending a year as a student assistant at Hamline University, and another as a player on the Piper roster ... he’ll look to pursue a master’s degree with an eye towards a future as a college basketball coach.
