Improve your health by breaking bad habits

In an effort to help Concord Community Schools employees focus on healthy living, Kami Wait recently shared some tips for healthy living.

During the interview, Kami provided Chief Human Resource Officer Dr. Denise Seger with lots of great information and tips to change habits that can improve our daily living. Here are some tips to break bad habits and attempt to improve the daily lifestyle.

Q: How long does it take to break bad habits?

A: Habits are personal behaviors that take 12 wee-ks to change. Just knowing you have bad habits does not initiate change in your personal life. The brain requires re-programming in order to sustain personal benefits. During the re-programming process, it is important not to make excuses or settle. While you do not need to deprive yourself, the follow through is an important aspect of re-wiring your brain for change. Keep in mind that breathing, exercise and occa-

sionally treating yourself can help you sustain the process of change. Challenge your belief of why and hold yourself accou-ntable.

Q: What is one important change that someone could begin today?

A: Drink water. Water is so important for your body and you should be consuming lots of water each day. Begin by swapping 3 beverages to water each day.

Q. What is one easy step thatcan make a significant impact?

A: Decrease your sugar intake. Eliminate soft drinks, candy, doughnuts and processed car-bohydrates. Sugar is in sauces, juices, and cereal, so read labels carefully. Challenge yourself to have black coffee, unsweetened tea and no soft drinks.

Q: If you do not exercise regularly, how do you suggest to begin?

A: Start with one day of move-

ment for 30 minutes of activity that you normally do not do. Do that for 3 weeks. Then in weeks 4-6 add a second day of activity. In weeks 7-9 add a third day of activity. Movement is important regardless of the age.

Q: How many hours of sleep are necessary?

A: Sleep is important and you should get 7-8 hours each night. It is also important to power down before the end of the night. During the last hour before bed, do not use cellpho-nes or computers. Turn off the television 30 minutes prior to going to bed. Write down 3 successes from the day and one worry that you want to let go. It is important to end the day with celebration, gratitude and self-affirmation.

Kami is passionate about tea-ching people how to get out of their own way. She is currently serving as the President for Concord School Board. She and her husband Aaron have two children: Kay and Zak.
