Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Fumihiko Maki, the new Aga Khan museum is a marvel of modern design that also incorporates classic Islamic architectural principles. That alone is reason to pay a visit. While not visually stunning on a grand scale, some of the individual artifacts are as beautiful as they are fascinating, nearly perfectly preserved after all these years.

You can’t miss Casa Loma, even if you try. Perched atop a hill in the north end, Casa Loma draws thousands of visitors each year who look up and proclaim, “It’s a castle in the middle of the city!” Casa Loma was built by Canadian financier Sir Henry Pellatt to fulfill his childhood wish for a castle. His dream took three years and $3.5 million to complete. It may appear anachronistic now, but it hasn’t lost its majestic charm. Its secret passageways, breathtaking towers, sweeping staircase, 800-foot tunnel, stables and five-acre gardens continue to excite all ages.

Another draw is the Reserve Boutique, a clubby, invitation-only back room where you can taste at a leisurely pace and engage in geeky wine-speak with a sommelier away from the madding crowd.

Hidden Bench 4152 Locust Ln

Settled on prime land in the Beamsville Bench district, this winery aimed for

the stars. Fine restaurants flock to their door begging for the super-premium

rieslings and Burgundian-styled pinot noirs and chardonnays. The two best

offerings, though, are based on the Bordeaux model, a superb $40 white

called Nuit Blanche blended from sauvignon blanc and semillon and an $85

red called La Brunante, made from merlot, cabernet sauvignon, and malbec.

Flat Rock Cellars 2727 Seventh Avenue

Ask for owner Ed Madronich and you’ll be faced with a question, “Which

one?” Father and son have built one of the most visually arresting and envi-

ronmentally conscious wineries in Niagara. Two six-sided buildings stand

side by side, one on stilts, with glass walls overlooking the vines. The wines,

which go by such names as Twisted and The Rogue and come sealed with

screw caps, are entirely serious, not least the juicy 2009 riesling.

13th Street Winery 1776 Fourth Avenue

Careful with your GPS setting; their name dates to a previous location, a farm

owned by co-founder and local sparkling-wine pioneer Gunther Funk. Now

owned by the Whitty & Mann families, everything there is fantastic, but

sparkling wine and gamay are the signatures. An elaborately renovated old

farmhouse, brimming with contemporary art, serves cheeses and charcuterie

on the wraparound porch.

helped launch the careers of numerous well-known bands and the hotel upstairs still acts as a rooming house

and rehearsal space for local musicians.
