Sudden LightTTBB Chorus unaccompaniedComposed as a wedding present for the composer’s wife, and premiered under the baton of Kimberly Dunn Adams at the composer’s wedding, Sudden Light sets Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s beautiful and mysterious poem of the etze name. Beginning softly with a modal melody, it gently builds to a climax on the word “soar” and returns at its conclusion to the modal harmony heard at the opening. Sudden Light is an attractive and useful piece on programs concerning love and com-mitment, and for performance at marriage ceremonies.Medium

This is probably one of the easi-est pieces of mine to learn yet one of the hardest to perform since the long phrases require a great deal of attention to dynamics, breathing, and consistency of tone.” —Don MacdonaldModerately Easy

Touching the Infinite SkyBased on the letters of John Muir from Yosemite, California (1871–72)Tenor Solo, TTBB Chorus, and Piano“Touching the Infinite Sky is a choral adaptation of the composer’s solo song cycle, Songs from the High Sierra….The new adaptation employs the additional voices as an expansive background to the soloist. As the chorus joins in the accompaniment sonorities, a sense of space and depth is created, well-suited to songs about the wilderness. The chorus also shares melodic material with the soloist, in dialogue or in unison. The songs begin with an ascent into the mountains. They close with the return to the coast, to the magnificent Sequoia trees, where John Muir camps for the night, in the company of a squirrel. Charmingly, he writes ‘therefore, my Carr, good-night.’” Duration: 17:30—Gwyneth Walker. Medium

If Ye Love MeSATB Chorus (divisi) unaccompaniedIf Ye Love Me was composed as a reflective commentary on the well-known motet by Thomas Tallis (1505–1585). Homophony predominates in the first section but with clusters rather than the traditional harmonies used by Tallis. Later, the texture reduc-es to a very simple four-voice contrapuntal texture as a brief reference to Tallis’ style. The chorus then divides into two groups with one group continuing the counterpoint which is now expanded into a more active and complex style. The second group of voices returns to the homophonic style, but now in widely expanded harmonies. Thus, the motet concludes with homophony and counterpoint sounding simultaneously. FarewellSATB Soli and SATB Chorus (divisi) unaccompanied“Farewell is among my earliest works for choir, written in high school and dedicated to my high school choral director, George Weigle. The text of Kahlil Gibran (1883–1931) expresses the grati-tude so many feel on graduation to teachers who give so much of themselves.”—Steven SametzModerately Difficult

Carmina amorisSoprano and Tenor Soli, off-stage Soprano Solo, SATB Chorus (divisi), and Orchestra“When I first began to look at medieval Latin texts for Carmina amoris, the epigrams, marginalia, and love letters I found by clerics and nuns from the fourth to the thirteenth centuries were a revelation. The beauty and freshness of the language spoke across the centuries. In matters of love (longing, desire, lamenting, sleepless wondering, mak-ing up, and quarreling), it appears not much has changed from the so-called ‘dark ages’ to our own well-illumined era.” —Steven Sametz Orchestral score and parts available for rental. Singers to ComeSoprano Solo, SATB Semi-Chorus, SATB Chorus, and Piano“Singers to Come brings together four poets—a Romantic, a Victorian, and two contem-porary Americans—whose subject is passionate singing. The familiar origins of song in the sights and sounds of nature is painted in moonlight to guitar accompaniment by Shelley. Galway Kinnell’s earnest treble choir reminds us—to a hint of ‘A Balm in Gilead’—that ‘everyone who truly sings is beautiful.’ Minnesota-born Richard Eberhart’s driving, concise lines focus our awareness: ’Be tree and bird.’ Alice Meynell looks to the future and exhorts us to pass it on. As an avid choral singer myself, I can only add: ‘Alleluia, Amen.’”—David Evan ThomasMedium

Northwest PassageSATB Chorus, Wind Quintet and String Quartet, or Piano“Northwest Passage is a set of ‘poetic landscapes’ that reflects on three elements of the great Northwest of the United States—rivers, mountains, and prairies. Fourteen AngelsSATB Chorus and Harp (or Piano) or Guitar“The intertwining of friendship and the guitar engendered this composition. Christine and Jerry da Silva are close friends of Kurt Wolf, with whom Jerry studies guitar; Kurt is my close friend, who studied with me for his MM in classical guitar at the University of Minnesota. Following the tragic loss of their infant daughter Elena, Kurt commissioned this work for chorus and guitar to offer his friends the gift of something lasting in the face of impermanence. As requested, I incorporated the Catalan carol, El Noi de la Mare, which is also famous as a guitar solo. It was always the father’s intention that this gift would eventually be placed in service as a soothing lullaby, one which he had planned to play frequently for his infant child.” —Jeffrey Van Duration: 4:30Moderately Easy

Two Psalm Texts: These settings present disparate manners in which to utter these two terse, yet potent psalm texts: from the sorrowful to the exuberant, the primitive to the elegant. The music reflects these wide-ranging interpretations with interchanges of contrapuntal and homophonic textures, ostinato and scalar passages, a broad harmonic palette, and the utilization of the full tessitura of the chorus.Moderately Difficult

Going Across the MountainSATB Chorus unaccompanied“This arrangement contrasts the unbridled optimism and resolve of a person heading off to war with the bittersweet nostalgia of leaving a special person behind, along with the promise of return. The repeated statements of the refrain are most effective when singers highlight the syncopations and rhythmic differences among them.…All singers should enjoy the harmonic movement of the last line, and their carefully timed roles in it—all the way to the altos’ final, delayed word.” —Ellen Gilson Voth Duration: 2:01Medium

HushabySATB Chorus (divisi) unaccompanied“This arrangement presents the challenge of singing a familiar lullaby with freshness and a tender sound quality that is well supported. Take great care in the opening to energize the E natural pedal point. The middle section (mm. 22–52) is intended to be dream-like, with cascading images of horses that are moving quickly then gradually slowing their pace. The ritardando is built in; singers should focus on being absolutely rhythmic with the 8th-note pulse. The last page is the place to be luxurious with time, and to enjoy the final hum fading into silence.” —Ellen Gilson Voth Duration: 2:37Medium

Down to the River to PraySATB Chorus and Piano or Brass Quintet and Percussion“Down to the River to Pray originates as an American gospel song with a simple mes-sage of faith and baptism, going ‘down to the river.’…Usually the song is performed a cappella, and slowly, prayerfully. However, the walking aspect of the lyrics might sug-gest a different approach—one of swing rhythm in duple meter. Here the focus is on the journey, the joy of the pilgrimage, and the hope for freedom. The accompaniment (either piano, or brass and percussion) plays a featured role, especially as a rhythmic force. The song now becomes one of triumphant progression, hastening on the ‘good old way!’” —Gwyneth WalkerMedium

Steal AwaySATB Chorus and PianoSteal Away interprets the traditional spiritual, Steal Away to Jesus, as a song of alternat-ing sorrow and strength. The refrains are presented quietly and mournfully. In contrast, the verses are sung with conviction. Of special interest is the use of scale patterns. In the opening refrain, and on every occurrence of the words “steal away,” the scales descend, marked as falling tears, or stealing away. At the conclusion of the song, the scales rise, as the soul ascending to heaven. “My Lord calls me, calls me home.” Duration: 3:40Moderately Easy
