Michelle Thompson

I chose to look at Michelle Thompson as her work is displaying its meaning in a unusual and contemporary way. I like how she has overlayed images in order to created the final construction of her work. There is a real rough element which i like as there is no formation made however the layers are constructed to work togeth-er. The colour scheme varies as there is an abstract element involved because on the combination of images as some vary in date or format they were taken. I like how some of the images are in bright bold colours which contrast from the rest which draw in your intention and then you make a connection to the images around it, Some images have been positioned so that there is a conbimed image which works well as it looks like a collage of a picture that works well together. A lot of not most of her designs include black and white images white contrast with the col-oured ones but it makes us instinctively connect the images to the genre they were taken. I could use these elements to help show a clear contrast with my imag-es but also how i can combined images for effect.

There is a wide range of medias used which works to her advantages. As there are many different textures in the design and our visu-als can imagine different textures and create different surfaces from our own imagination which is effective as her work is connection to us easily through us making our own inter-pretation of the different elements. There is a main focus in the centre as there is a congest-ed feel of the images because they are collid-ing in the centre. Which allows there to be a lot of negative space which shows off the textures background and how the images are looked at on their own. The images have been put onto the page but then media has been added on using pastels or paint, in a abstract format which works well as its different bursts of col-our which really helps lead your eyes around the image and also its another image that is overlaying the others and trapping the other pictures. From the other media used it shows that theres roughness used and its been used make the design loo more urban. These differ-ent aspects i can use to influence my work as i like the fact that all the different medias com-bined work well together and create a collage format and uses visual textures to connect with the viewers and allow us to interpret how the picture would feel, just by looking at the design.

Page 3: Conceptual Art

The technique gives off a older genre vibe as it looks roughly made and abstractly combined. Also The black and white images suggest a el-ement of time and it may be out of date but the things in the photo are something that doesn’t age as are still the same so prehaps that was intentionally made by Michelle Thompson so we can interpret each item individually rather than as a collage of images composed to-gether to form something else. From this i will use the idea of abstraction of images to form something else and how i can make individual elements stand out but still be included in the original image.

Overal I like the methods used as there is a good combination of different me-dias which has come accross effective rather than cluttered and unorgainsied. I like the negative space used as its a positive rather than a negative to the de-sign as it shows off the textures in the image and the different materials used rather than being blank and not showing off anything other than gaps. I like the abstract elements because they combine the pictures together by being over the pictures and guiding the eye around the page.

This is a interpretation of the moethod Michelle Thompson goes through. I use the technique she would of used with rough shapes and also layered materi-als. O like the outcome as its abstract with the shapes involved and also the structure of the design is very expres-sive because there are no guide lines being follwed as each different piece is just controlled by another. I liked the ele-ment of being playful with the different materials as it allowed me to experiment with different outcomes but also i didnt have any restrictions as to thing i need to have included.

I like this outcome to help develop the rough texture i have included acylic mark-ings to make the texture be more rough and dirty, to help influence the feeling of time and something being run down. With this i inrtend include potential images in black and white that vary in scale and the proportion to each image is wrong to help show obscurity and abstraction.

I experimented with making my own tex-tures to overlay onto my interpretation to change the texture of the images.

ZSDesigns COThese are images by various pho-tographys for this design company. They are conceptual images which i immediately took a interest into because through simple construc-tion they show a good design and something that can easily connect to the viewers because they are very expressive and tell a story that we can use our imagination to create our own opinion of what the story behind the image is.

These images are all about bringing the objects to life which is a good technique to use in an image because there is a story to be made. They are quite self explainatary because of the simplicity of the image. These objects used are something that anyone can have ac-cess to, but the images are of a high quality and concept which has worked well because the objects may have the perspective of that they cant really be used much because they are basic shapes and designs. Using simple lines and added on drawings it really changes the meaning behind the pictures, be-cause there isn’t a lot of difficulty in the construction however tyhe thought and concept does take time because they work so well through a simple nature. I like the positioning of the photo of the cd because the symbols are heading to-wards us, which draws us into the image and creates a connection because we feel the image is being influence by us. There is a range in forms of the symbols and how they’re position to show depth in a flat surface.

Page 7: Conceptual Art

These images are very narrative as we can see whats going on and the images have been taken so that the story is being seen accross the picture. For exam-ple the cigarette process shows us the stages being experienced which guides our eye line around the page and we translate the story. The colour varies because if theres a key feature it would be in colour to stand out and really draw you in to what is going on in the picture. To really emphasis on the objects there is only sim-ple backgrounds so there is no complex images and objects that could interfer with the main ones.

Page 8: Conceptual Art

I like this outcome of the experiments as its a good interpretaion of ZSde-signs but also its an ef-fective image. I could use this for m interpretations and use it in my devel-opment as the object is clearly displaying whats going on. I could use spaces and different col-lages to narrate a story through different designs to express the story of the objects.

Page 9: Conceptual Art

Ive used the concept of bringing objects to life. I chose different shapes to experiment with that i could use in the collages, so i can manipulate the scale and contrast shapes that may not originally be the same size. Also Michelle Thompson may include a door because it al-lows the design be become a space that would contain these objects.

Page 10: Conceptual Art

These are my experiment of combing the objects with the textured surfaces. I feel they work well as ive shown a variation in my scale and also positioning on the page which would hopefully reflex different perspectives which would lead to different ideas as to what im trying to get accross.

I really like the rough col-oured textures and how the marking are really expressive because they help explain my work and also show a bit of character into my work because they show a differ-ent side rather than a smooth neat surface.

Page 11: Conceptual Art

This is a really lay-ered rough surface which i feel may have too much onto is as it becomes overpowering which may work in the sense that i want the view of something taking over, but i wanted to really show off the differ-ent tones and varia-tion in my textures.

I like this interpretation because it varies is some nice textures which i like because the layering tech-nique is really effective as it allows different images to combine together and contrast which eachother which has a positive effect on the outcome. I show dark raw colours to use so that it would have a nice contrast with the texture of the materials in the background and also it would create nice marks and shapes.

Page 12: Conceptual Art

I experimented with a glass sheet and with paint mark-ings which i overlayed on dif-ferent surfaces so i remained with the same shapes, i want-ed to do this so i get a vari-ation in my outcomes and i wanted to see how the mark-ings looked through compar-ing a variation of surfaces.

Page 13: Conceptual Art

I used a newspaper as it how we find out the ma-jority of our news are i wanted the figure to be seen but with marking ontop createa impact of whats hiding behind the different elements.

Thomas Hirschhorn

worked in Paris as a graphic artist. He were concerned with politics and culture, displaying impromptu creations and posters on the street mostly using the language of advertisement. He tended to use common materials such as cardboard, foil, duct tape, and plastic wrap. He has described his choice to use everyday materials in his work as “political” and that he only uses materials that are “universal, economic, in-clusive, and don’t bear any plus-value”.I chose to look at Hirschhorns work due to the expressive technique he uses in or-der to express what he wants to, using a rough abstract form. I took a interest in the forms he used for example the materials he used were a nice range which is very explorative which would help add a variation of ideas in his work. I wanted to analyse his work so i could get a better understand of this method and also the impact it has on me and how i can transform that into my work and reflect how i want my viewers to interpret my work. I like his work as the variation of pictures shows that the scale in not to suit perspective which is a nice touch as means somethings may come ac-cross more powerful and made to draw your attention more. Which is something that i will look into so my work has something that attracts the eye. the design is very collage like and been used to show a rough overpwering message through the images. There is a small amunt of work in some of his designs that are hand written expressing a opinion on the topic in the design. This is a nice element as its very rough and shows a personal side that the artist has put into it. The actions used in the ink look very free flowing and naturl however i believe theyre deliberately places and the outcome is displayed in this way because thats the outcome that he wanted.

Page 17: Conceptual Art

The genre of these designs are very mod-ern as some of the features in the col-lages may reflect that. However his work is influenced by politics and is can come accross in his work as the feelings of anger and frustration through politics is displayd in the movement of the ink but also the pictures of war and devestation are something that he needs to express through art as to how he feels about these things and whats being done.

The designs would usually tend to have a main image that really stands out as the the theme of the image, and then from that the ink and markings would guide you eye around the image and influence you to what connects to what and how we are meant to associate things with one another. Continually the construction of the dif-ferent images i believe have been set specific positions for wich they would reflex opinions off one another and also contrast to a different image in scale or in col-our but also the view behind it.I like the work and the method used as its effective as he uses red alot which is a powerful colour as it shows danger but also me easily connection it to blood, and hes used it in vast amounts which perhaps shows pain caused by whats going on in the images and also about how each image speaks out for itself as to what it feels, which is a nice way of connecting to his viewers by allowing his work explain itself through a powerful technique.

Page 18: Conceptual Art

This is my Thomas Hirschhorn interpretation. I chose to look at this arist as he uses a really interesting exploration of different materials and by using different materials he creates different impacts based on what is in the images and also how he reflects them in his art. My interpretation was based on figures seen in recent paper and it was for people in the public eye and i chose to do his technique within the because of that. The different colours contrast which eachother which is a nice aspect as its very bright and expressive also i like the fact that there is no format on style, regard-ing the marks ive make, but its a nice abstract element as its a collage of pictures and also textures.
