Ethics

Virtue and Action

Virtue ethics emphasizes what we should be.

Action ethics emphasizes what we should do.

Distributiveand Procedural Justice

Distributive justiceis mainlyinterested in the

consequencesof our actions,

and how these

consequences aredistributed.

Procedural justiceis mainly interested

in the process of deciding which actions to take;how decisions are made.

Anthropocentrism and Eco-centrism

Anthropocentrism is the view that humans are what is ultimately important.

Eco-centrism is the view that ecosystems are what is ultimately important.

Altruism and Selfishness

The more selfish we are, the less we will try to help others; the more altruisticwe are, the more we will try to help others.

Consequentialism - The rightness or wrongness of an action is determined by its consequences.

Ethical egoism is the prescriptive doctrine that all persons ought to act from their own self-interest.

Utilitarianism- The right action is that which produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number.

Deontology -The rightness or wrongness of an action is determined by an inherently valid rule.

Kantianism - the act itself is more important than the

outcome of that act.
