BACKGROUND:•Largest and more educated city.

• Karachi is the most populous city in the country.

LOCATION:• The city is located in the south of the country, along the coastline meeting the Arabian Sea.

AREA:

• Its spread over 3,537 sq.km.

ECONOMICAL BACKGROUND:• The main sea port and financial center of Pakistan.

•Karachi is Pakistan’s premier center of banking, industry, economic activity and trade and is home to its largest corporations.

Evaluation of wind data suggests that the main prevailing wind direction for Karachi is primarily from the west to west-southwest, off the Arabian Sea. During the hottest months of the year, daytime afternoon and early evening southwesterly winds can blow up to 8.3 m/s (18.6 mph), bringing relief to the urban environment. Winter patterns show a tendency towards prevailing north to north-northwest winds mixed with the expected westerly winds off the Arabian Sea.

KARACHI UNIVERSITYThe largest public university in Karachi serving anon-campus student population of more than24,000. According to the Higher EducationCommission (HEC) of Pakistan, it is ranked amongthe top three universities of the country. In 2008the university entered the -QS World UniversityRankings for the top 500 universities in the world.

BACKGROUND:• In 1951 the government of Pakistan established the University of Karachi.

• The construction of a well equipped modern university was an expensive venture.

LOCATION:• It is located North-East of Karachi

• 8 miles from its center.

AREA:•The site was a flat plot of 1200 acres.

CONSTRUCTION:• A team of French Architects were commissioned to develop the layout of the university.

ARCHITECTURAL LAYOUT:• A North-South road from the principal axis and divides the campus into two, with general buildings to the East and student housing and sports facilities to the West.

SERVICES:• Housing for 1000 students• Staff and servant housing• International hostel• Guest house• Student Union• Auditorium• Library• Museum • Mosque• Teacher Club• Athletic facilities

SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION:

7000 students were divided into following facilities;

• Science Public Administration

• Business Education & Law

THE ARCHITECTURAL IDEOLOGY

DESIGN PRINCIPLES AND IMPLEMENTATION

A TEAM OF FRENCH ARCHITECTS WERE COMMISSIONEDTO DEVELOP THE LAYOUT OF THE UNIVERSITY. MICHELECOCHARD BEING THE LEAD ARCHITECT INVOLVED.

ARCHITECTURAL STYLE:• Modern

•Influence of traditional and local environment conditions

• Mughal Landscaping concepts

• Not international, but uniquely sub continental

SCREEN:• Screens are used as shading mechanism for protection against the harsh sun

•The buildings are oriented to allow cross ventilation through the screen

LANDSCAPE:• Green spaces and footpath make circulation easy and pleasant

• Variety of gardens with lawn, shrubs and pools

• Water is to be employed as a decorative element

Programmatic Requirements

PROPOSAL 1

SCHEMATIC

• ZONING

•The building form is divided into two main parts- the academic and the administrative block, both following a different geometry.•This allows for the two functions to be connected but function independently.•The labs/ auxiliary spaces are located on the ground floor for easy linkage with the classrooms on the first floor.• Central court in the academic block unifies the space visually and experientially.

THE BUILDING IN RESPONSE TO THE MATER- PLANNING AND CONTEXT OF KARACHI UNIVERSITY

•The response is driven from the desire of creating a signature building which stands out in the Karachi university campus as a distinct institute.•The monumental academic block stands as a sculpture within a soft landscape designed around it.

HANDICAP ACCESSIBILITY-

The ground floor is handicap accessible- by providing a ramp on entrance.The functions on ground floor include administration and auxiliary spaces Two toilet cubicles- both for male and female are ADA compliant.

PROVISION OF TELEPHONE/ INTERNET:

• It will be provided through the local available infrastructure on campus

BUILDING APPROVAL

•Principally the design needs to be approved by the KBCA but in this case it only needs to be informed as it is within the Karachi University and is part of the larger scheme.

PROVISION FOR NATURAL GAS

• It will be provided for the labs through the local available infrastructure on campus. Karachi university has provision for natural gas.

STANDARDS

•The building follows the standards of seismic zone 2b

SITE PLAN

DESIGN STRATEGY

The design aimed to capture the spirit of the Karachi university campus by improvising on its existing characteristics. The traditional concept of screens and shading mechanisms (vertical and horizontal brisesolei) are used with a new proportion and rhythm.

SCHEMATIC

• ZONING

• The building follows a linear arrangement of massing .• The auxiliary and admin are strategically placed to allow easy access upon entrance to the scheme. • Classrooms in the middle are linked to labs on one side and auxiliary and administration on the other side allowing for students to use these functions together.• The common room sits in between the academic functions for the students to be able to access from labs and classrooms• All functions look into a landscaped court which unifies the functions visually.

THE BUILDING IN RESPONSE TO THE MATER- PLANNING AND CONTEXT OF KARACHI UNIVERSITY

•A team of French Architects were commissioned to develop the layout of the university. Michel Ecochard being the lead architect involved. •The design aims to capture the spirit of Karachi university campus by improvising on its existing characteristics. •The design was dealt keeping in mind a linear arrangement of massing which follows through in the KU scheme allowing maximum ventilation and natural light penetration.
