    CONCEPT OF TEACHING

    Concept of teaching

It is based on Piagets and Bruners developmental

    theories.

Concept is the building block where the students

need to organise their thinking and communication.

    Purpose of teaching

To help the students to gain understanding and

prepare them to improve their critical thinking skill.

    To be applied in learning.

Four stages in concept of education

    1. Provide the objectives

    2. Examples of input

    3. Tests for the performance of the concept4. Analysis of students thinking process

    Learning environment for concept

    teaching

    It is structured and teacher-centered.

As a teacher, they need to do evaluation of the

concept that is intended to be taught, choose the

most suitable example for the concept teaching.

Their roles are to give feedback on students idea,

encourage students participation and support them

    to develop their reasoning abilities.

    Conjunctive concept

Refers to a class of objects having more than one

    attributes in common.

    Sometimes called "and" concepts:

To belong to the concept class, an item must have

"This feature and this feature and this feature."

For example, a motorcycle must have two wheels

and an engine and handle bars.

    Disjunctive Concept

Refers to objects that have at least one of several

possible features. These are "either-or concepts." To

belong, an item must have "this feature or that

    feature or another feature." Example:

In the game of baseball, a strike is either a swing

and a miss or a pitch down the middle or a foul ball.

The either-or quality of disjunctive concepts makes

    them difficult to learn.

    Cont

A disjunctive concept looks at whether individual

attributes create a whole, and is therefore useful in

    creating a concept of something.

Disjunctive concepts are viewed in either-or terms as

mentioned, so that a concept is formed either

    because of X or Y

    9/17

    Example:

You go to a party with a friend and your friends saysthey wont drink any beer or spirits. Later you see your

friend being offered a drink by someone but they

    refuse the drink.

As a result, you conclude that your friend was offered a

beer or a spirit which is why they refused the drink.

In this e.g., the disjunctive concept is drinks your friend

will not drink. So what you have done here to create the disjunctive

concept is to use bits of information (e.g. beer & spirits)

to form a concept (e.g. drinks your friend will not drink.)

    Relational concept

A relational concept looks at the connection between

    objects or ideas.

    Example

If you work at a restaurant and someone leaves you

a small tip, you may call them a cheapskate. But if

someone leaves you a large tip, you may call them a

big spender. These two concepts (cheapskate & big spender) are

relational because one person tips more than the

    other person.

  • 8/4/2019 Concept of Teaching (1)

    11/17

    Cont.

It classifies objects on the basis of their relationship

to something else or by the relationship between

features of an object. Larger, above, left,

north, and upside down are all relational concepts.

  • 8/4/2019 Concept of Teaching (1)

    12/17

Another example of a relational concept can be

found within the structure of words

    For example:

really good, very good, amazingly good, are

all relational concepts because they relate to

    something being good.

Relational concept = Different concepts which areconnected to a central theme

    Summary

A conjunctive concept = concept formed by grouping

    together the individual attributes/features of

    something to form a whole

A disjunctive concept = concept made up of either

    of x or of y

A relational concept = revolves around a central

theme with individual attributes being connected insomeway to it

    Teaching Approach Techniques

In planning and carrying out teaching concept, the

teacher must choose concepts and suitable teaching

approach techniques. A variety of approaches can

be used to teach concepts such as direct teachingand concept achievement.

  • 8/4/2019 Concept of Teaching (1)

    15/17

In direct teaching, the teacher labels and defines

concepts at the early lesson. After that the teacher

will give a few examples for the concept through

    exposition.

  • 8/4/2019 Concept of Teaching (1)

    16/17

In concept achievement, teacher will give some

examples for a concept without labeling and

defining the concepts until the end of the lesson as

what is done in the teaching based on inductiveprocess.
