Introduction
Technique to represent knowledge in graphs.
It is a diagram to depict suggested
relationships between concepts.
It is a graphical tool designers, engineers use to
organize and structure knowledge
Developed by Joseph D. Novak at Cornell
University in the 1970s

Concepts
Cause a picture to form in your mind
e.g. Dog, Tree, Stone
Are represented in differentlanguages by words/terms
Words are labels for concepts
Are based on your prior experience
and knowledge

Linking Words
Connect concepts to form propositions
Propositions are statements (not necessarily
complete sentences) that make sense
e.g., Thedog is playing.

Components
Nodesrepresent concepts.
Links represent relations between concepts.
Arrow heads indicate direction.
Labels on the links describe the nature of therelationship.
Combined, these three components createpropositions or meaningful statements

Identify the key concepts
(Brainstorming)
Rank the concepts from general to
specific. Put general concepts at thetop or in the center. (Organize,
Layout)
Connect the concepts using linkingwords. (Linking)
Make cross links between concepts
(Revising , Finalizing)

Concept Map Structures
Hierarchical
You can structure your map hierarchically by placing
the most inclusive, most general concept(s) at the
top and less important concepts at the bottom(Figure 1).
Non-Hierarchical
You may also create a non-hierarchical network. In
this case, there is no super ordinate concept; the
map is structured like a web (Figure 2)
