Comun Kitchen & Tavern, a neighborhood restaurant in the East Village area of downtown San Diego, opened summer of 2014. With Chef Chad White at the helm, he has created a communal environment bringing the Baja spirit north.

WHAT IS COMÚN?Común may have inherently came from years of Chad stuffing his face with street tacos in Tijuana, visiting his grandfather in San Felipe, hunting wild hare in Ojos Negro, cooking with amigos in Valle de Guadalupe, spear fishing in Agua Verde, camping in El Sacrificio eating scallops on the beach in Mulegé, sipping mezcal and sotol in La Paz, and/or maybe from eating ceviche in Ensenada. Did Común come from the generosity and friendship of a community of people, who helped inspire and support Chef Chad over the past 12 years? An inspiration that not only came

from his travels from Tijuana to Cabo, it’s an inspiration from a band of like minded chefs, bar tenders, food writers, mentors, friends, family and even the nay sayers he

surrounded himself with in San Diego. ""It takes a village" (community) to build, design, and culture a special place like Común. A restaurant for the community built by the community. A community of people who's creativity is allowed to run free and borderless. "From our insane art installations by Gloria Muriel from Mexicali, to the hand crafted stools and mid century chairs by Seth Sullivan in Tijuana. The one of a kind communal tables built at Chef Chads Restaurant, La Justina in Tijuana by

his partner Jaime Brambila. The incredibly talented hard working team who constructed Común from Jaime Partners, Jeremey Hunter and Maritza Pujals.

The outstanding support of all of the investors who believe in (Común) Community. "

Shooting the Great Chefs of Baja California ~ Josue had already worked with chef Chad White of Común in San Diego and La Justina in Tijuana. “That was on assignment for a publication. They wanted me to shoot more chefs from San Diego, but all of the restaurants they referred me to had Mexican chefs working

in the back. Chad was one of the only American chefs there I could find at the time!”
