MOONVES: NFL WILL STAY WITH US The current NFL TV packages are locked in until 2022, but many observers think that when the bidding starts again, players such as Google and Facebook could make aggressive bids to get some of the games. Advertising Age reports CBS boss Les Moonves expects to do battle with the digital behemoths, but is confident traditional television will retain most if not all of what it now has. Speaking at a media conference this week, Moonves said, “The tech giants all want to be involved in the NFL. It’s the best product in television. There’s going to be a lot of activity. As we head towards that large deal, I think these companies are going to be part of it…I think the NFL still believes on the sanctity of television.” Moonves also took a shot at cable delivery saying, “There’s a reason there’s been no Super Bowl on cable, that the three major packages are still on network….ESPN has (Monday Night Football) but I think there’s the belief and the knowledge that you can’t get 115 million people watching the Super Bowl online.” Advertising Age also noted Fox’s telecast of Super Bowl LI drew an average of 111.3 million viewers, while the livestream of the game on Fox Go averaged just 1.72 million, only about 1.5% of the total audience. And it says that’s in line with the adoption rates for Twitter’s livestream of Thursday Night Football last season.

WE ALL SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM Already among the largest supermarket food categories—one of only ten with annual sales in the double digit billions of dollars—ice cream continues to be a growth category. A new market research report from Packaged Facts says the attractive category has made stores want to put their own brand name on it, with store brand/private label sales now accounting for nearly 20% of all frozen dessert sales, packaged and novelties combined, and as much as half the sales in the sherbet/sorbet/water ice category. In addition to the size of the market, another reason for retailers to want in on ice cream sales via their private

label products is that ice cream is an expensive category for retail stores. It must be kept frozen and a lot of space must be given over to the category in order to keep up with the plethora of ice cream brands and varieties that consumers want to choose among. Sales of private label frozen desserts have grown steadily over the last couple of decades. In recent years, about two-thirds of consumers

have come to accept that private label frozen desserts are equal in quality to name brand frozen desserts. This perception is based in reality, the report says, as private label frozen desserts have been on a steady rise in terms of quality over the past three decades. With people willing to pay for superpremium brands, retailers upped their game to compete on quality, not just price—and Packaged Facts sees that trend likely to continue.

THIS AND THAT Although consumer credit cards balances in January were up 6% versus January, 2016, those balances came down from the December totals, the first month-to-month decline in ten months. The totals have been flirting with $1 trillion, as December debts totaled $998.9 billion and January slipped to $995.1 billion. The Wall Street Journal notes missed payments are rising (although still at low levels historically), with 3.21% of balances in default in January. For the full year of 2016, credit card debt rose about 6.5%, on top of a

5% increase the year before and a 4% increase in 2014…….Supermarkets and fast food dominated the uppermost ranks of the 2017 Temkin Experience Ratings, which is based on consumer feedback of their recent interactions with companies. Publix supermarkets was on top with an 84% experience rating, with H-E-B and Chick-fil-A each just one point behind at 83%. The rest of the leaders were Hardees, Chipotle, Hannaford and Regions Bank at 82%, and QVC, Food Lion and Trader Joe’s at 81%.

ADVERTISER NEWS (Continued from page 1).....Not many CEOs would admit business “fell off the ledge,” but Bojangles’ chief Cliff Rutledge characterized February results in that manner. “It wasn’t just us,” he added. “We’re hearing that from the entire industry”……Staples continues with its plan to close 70 stores this year as part of what its CEO calls “dramatically changing our mindset and operating model.” It has reorganized into two distinct divisions—Delivery (including staples.com and business-solutions operations) and Retail (including bricks-and-mortar stores). Comp store sales were down 7% in its latest quarter, with total sales down 8%.....Bottled water sales by volume surpassed sales of soft drinks last year, for the first time. Total bottled water volume grew nearly 9%, reaching 12.8 billion gallons, according to research and consulting firm Beverage Marketing Corporation. That’s 39 gallons of bottled water per person.
