OPEN HOUSE SPRING 2016 Event Report

EXECUTITE SUMMARY Department of Computer Science held its bi-annual Open House Event on 26TH May 2016. This event is arranged per semester and is a highlight of the semester activities. Over the course, the event is getting bigger and better and the industry participation is improving each time. This time well known and bigger firms from the industry not only participated but also offered positions to our graduating batch of students after conducting on-spot interviews. The feedback from our industrial partners has always been valued highly by our department and is shared amongst faculty for collective improvement of our academic standards. After conducting two Open House events, this was the first occasion when we had an overwhelmingly positive feedback from the industry. Our alumni in Tera Data, DPS, Nayatel brought along their HR departments to the event. The management from these companies had very positive remarks about the quality of graduates who are now part of their teams and they attended to hire more from COMSATS Islamabad.

INDUSTRIAL LIAISON CELL – CS (ILC) Department of Computer Science feels that a direct interaction with the software industry is paramount to ensuring a high quality and up to date dissemination of knowledge to our students. Industrial Liaison Cell was formulated by the department in early 2015 to establish and strengthen a steady link with partners from the industry so that their feedback can help us achieve even better standards. Many activities are arranged by this Cell to foster this relationship throughout the semester but the highlight is the Open House event arranged at the end of each semester. During this event our graduating batch is presented in front of industrial representatives to showcase their final year projects and demonstrate their skill set. Arrangements are made for the participating organization to conduct on-spot interviews. Faculty participation is also ensured at these occasions both to get the feedback to improve their respective knowledge areas but also to work on possible collaborations.


INDUSTRIAL PARTICIPATION The event was well attended by software development and services industry in and around Islamabad. For the BTN graduates, network equipment and services companies were also invited on the occasion. A list of participating companies is attached as ANNEX-A with this report. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Jamil Ahmad, Vice Chancellor of Abbasyn University. He was accompanied by Dr. Adnan from UET Taxilla.

The Alumni showed great interest in ILC activities focused around development of skill set in need in the local industry during the degree. Many have proposed programs that they have volunteered to conduct on campus also. We will take this forward and grow this network of alumni to get an even bigger audience to the university in the upcoming events.

INTERVIEWS AND JOB OFFERS Many companies conducted on-spot interviews short listing suitable candidates for final interviews in their offices. Student CVs were shared with all the participants from the industry in the form of a graduate booklet so that further candidates can be sought by them as and when needed.

CONCLUSION The Open House event was much appreciated by industry, members of academia from other universities and above all by our students. This gave them a new perspective on their skill sets and also provided a launching pad for their careers whether it is in industry or entrepreneurship. This event was also attended by students from junior semesters and many of them saw the importance of developing good skills in their academic tenure at COMSATS to be able to stand apart on these occasions. Awarding the best projects is also an incentive for the upcoming batches to pick up good projects and then execute them well. The department is committed to its resolve in hosting this event regularly and incorporating the feedback into our academic programs. We are also learning from our experiences and each time the event is better than the last. We will take on the leads established with Teradata and Telenor on the occasion and engage their representatives and our students more often through seminars and training workshops.
