Example of Reliability Enhancement in Transportation Planning
• National Capital Region (Canada) network
• Task: to estimate intra-zonal trip lengths
• O-D survey records geocoded using TransCAD
• Use of shortest path algorithm within TransCAD -- Macro written to Calculate trip lengths

Example of Reliability Enhancement
in Transportation Planning (Cont.)
• GIS Approach: 376,000 Veh-Km/day of intra-zonal travel.
• Conventional Factor Approach: 340,000 Veh-Km/day.
• Difference: 10.6%
• Also, the Factor Approach consistently tends to underestimate trip lengths.
