Exemplar Pack GCSE Computer Science (9-1)

About this exemplar pack

This pack has been produced to support Computer Science teachers delivering

the new GCSE Computer Science (9-1) specification (first assessment summer

2018).

The pack contains exemplar student responses to GCSE Computer Science (9-1)

Components 1 and 2. It shows real student responses to a selection of

questions taken from the sample assessment materials. Examiners’ comments

are included.

The students were AS students in the fourth month of their course who had not

done GCSE Computer Science, so there were some topics which they had not

covered at that stage.

Assessment Objectives

There are three Assessment Objectives which are assessed in this qualification.

Assessment Objective Weighting

A01 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the

key concepts and principles of computer science

30%

A02 Apply knowledge and understanding of key concepts

and principles of computer science

40%

A03 Analyse problems in computational terms:

• To make reasoned judgements

• To design, program, evaluate and refine

solutions

30%

These Assessment Objectives are spread over the three components as follows:

Question Types

A selection of questions have been chosen as exemplars to cover different

command words, styles of questions and topics.

Mark Schemes

This pack includes mark schemes for the exemplar questions only. It is

important to note that these questions and mark schemes are from the Sample

Assessment Materials; for live papers additional answers may be added during

moderation.

The complete Sample Assessment Materials can be found at Sample Assessment

Materials Computer Science.

Examiner Comments: This response gained 1 mark for indicating communication between networked devices. Responses gaining 2 marks included the idea of 'a common set of rules'.
robertson_h
Text Box
Examiner Comments: This response gained 1 mark for mentioning fixing bugs (security fixes). To gain 2 marks responses needed to expand the explanation to make reference to cyberattacks.

4

robertson_h
Text Box
Examiner Comments: This response gained 1 mark for a mention of addressing and a routing device. This candidate did not then expand the description to cover packet addressing via the router.

5

robertson_h
Text Box
Examiner Comments: This response gained 4 marks, having 2 or more valid points linked to the given context, but with some technical errors.

6

robertson_h
Text Box
Examiner Comments: This response gained both marks with a clear definition covering both aspects.
robertson_h
Text Box
Examiner Comments: This response gained 1 mark for a clear answer referencing the definition.

7

robertson_h
Text Box
Examiner Comments: This response gained 2 marks, with 2 clear points. The marking benefited from the inclusion of the diagram, which was asked for in the question.

8

robertson_h
Text Box
Examiner Comments: This response gained 1 mark with a clear definition, but did not reference the context which might have achieved another mark.
robertson_h
Text Box
Examiner Comments: This response gained 0 marks.
robertson_h
