The games industry is the economic sector involved with the development, marketing and sales of video games. It involves a lot of job disciplines and employs thousands of people worldwide.

Within this media sector there are many jobs including: game art, game design, game development, game producer, game testing etc.

The gaming industry has 11 countries with revenues of more than $1 billion, as of 2012 it has made $68 billion which makes this particular industry the fastest growing component of the international media sector.

Examples of companies in this sector

Rockstar Games is a multinational video game developer owned by Take-Two Interactive and is mostly known for video games such as Grand Theft Auto, Max Payne, L.A. Noire, Bully and Red Dead. There use of open world, free roaming gameplay has gained a wide audience of gamers.

Rockstar have many studios around the world including Rockstar Japan, Rockstar London, Rockstar Leeds and many others.

Rockstar have trade marked Rockstar Films and have acted as executive producers in films such as The Football Factory (2004).

Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc is an public American publisher, developer and distributor of video game. Take-Two own Rockstar Games and 2K Games. They have published notable games such as the famous Grand Theft Auto series, the Midnight Club series and Bioshock. As owner of 2K Games, Take-Two publishes 2K Sports titles such as NFL and WWE games.

Electronic Arts, Inc. (EA) is an multinational public American developer, marketer, publisher and distributor of video games which served globally.

Founded and incorporated in 1982 by Trip Hawkins, this company was a pioneer of the early home computer games industry and was known for promoting the design and programmers responsible for its games.

EA is the third worlds largest gaming company with a revenue of more than $4 billion (2012) and over 9,000 employees (2013).

EA has notable works such as the FIFA franchise, Mass Effect franchise, Battlefield franchise and Dead Space franchise. They are also known for there partnership with LucasArts and creating the star wars games.

The relationships between computer games companies and other companies in the creative media sector

In the gaming industry, a lot of modern games are using music from solo artists or bands to promote their game and excite their target audience. This is beneficial to the games company and the artist as they are both promoting each other and gaining a wider audience.

Games such as Call of Duty have used Eminem on two occasions for their promotional gameplay or narrative videos. They used ‘Won’t Back Down’ by Eminem for Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010) and ‘Survival’ by Eminem for the latest game Call of Duty: Ghosts (2013).

How does this industry relate to other creative media industries

This industry is related to other media industries such as, Photography and photo imaging because game designers use this to help create their game environments and graphics, this plays a huge role in designing games.

The gaming industry can also be related to film because of game adaptations into the film industry such as the Max Payne series which is a Rockstar game.
