1. Computer Applications in Chemical Engineering
Computers are used nowadays in many cases in all fields including chemical engineering. Computershave also revolutionized the way chemical engineers design and analyze processes, whether designing
large units to make polyethylene or small microreactors to detect biological agents. Computer programs
can now solve difficult problems in a fraction of the time it used to take and also do the numerical
calculations for you. And here are some computer applications in chemical engineering:

2. Identify Common Software Used in Chemical Engineering
Software Purpose
AspenTech HYSYS Integrated package from Hyprotech that covers all process
simulation and real-time applications. Flowsheet based dynamic and
steady state process modeling.
Process Simulation Software A model-based representation ofchemical, physical, biological, and
other technical processes and unit operations in software. Describes
processes in flow diagrams where unit operations are positioned and
connected by product or educt streams.
ChemCADAn integrated suite of intuitive chemical process engineering
software. It has the power and tremendous range of capabilities to
meet an engineer's chemical process simulation needs, from day-to-
day challenges to large, multifaceted projects.
MATLAB A high-performance language for technical computing. It integrates
computation, visualization, and programming in an easy-to-use
environment where problems and solutions are expressed in familiarmathematical notation.
3. Overview of Word Processing Software
Many single users, offices, businesses and organizations use computers to create, edit and print written
documents. For this reason word processing software are sought. Word processing software is used to
compose, edit, format and print written documents with high quality, in a timely fashion. Word
processors are also known as document preparation systems, which happen to be computer application
software.
The basic types of word processors (before the time of computers) were type writers and electrical typewriters. These machines gave very limited range when it came to composing and editing a document. It
was not possible to change fonts or create different types of bullets. Typing errors needed to be zero,
for if they happened, the finish of the document will not be up to standard.
Modern word processing programs, however, include features to customize the style of the text, change
the page formatting, and may be able to add headers, footers, and page numbers to each page.
Word processing applications are among the most widely used software programs available. Different
word processing applications are used with the various operating systems and platforms, but they all
provide roughly the same functionality. Word processing applications are used within personal and
business communications, to create many different types of document. Any word processor is generallyexpected to offer a few key features.
Text
One of the key elements in a word processing application is the ability to enter and save text in digital
files. However, a defining characteristic of a word processing application is also that it offers text
processing functions beyond those of a basic text editing program. Rather than simply saving text in
".txt" files, word processors are able to format text in various ways, saving it using extensions such as
".doc" in Microsoft Word, ".odt" in Open Office and ".pages" in the Mac iWork office suite.

Formatting
Word processors provide the ability to format documents in a number of ways. Text appearance and
document layout can be controlled through the user interface. Buttons and menu items allow users to
control fonts, text size, text style, decoration, margins and line height, among many other features.
Footnotes, headers, footers and page numbers are commonly used elements provided as standard.
Templates
The most popular word processing applications provide a number of set templates for various specific
purposes. When such templates are selected, users can enter their text within a set layout including
styles that are appropriate to the template context.
Tools
Word processors typically provide a range of processing and organizational tools designed for use by
individuals and companies. Spell-check facilities allow users to identify and correct spelling errors within
their chosen language. Organizational tools include mail merging, in which a data source can be used to
send the same letter to multiple addresses using templates.
Inclusion of Other MediaWord processing documents can contain media imported from external sources. This can include images
imported from the user's computer or over a network. Data can also be imported, such as structured
table data from an external spreadsheet document.
Samples of Word Processing Software
Microsoft Word
One of the most well-known and widely used word processing applications on the market is Microsoft
Word. Microsoft Corp. first released this program to the market in 1989, and since then there have been
a number of upgrades to the software. Word can be purchased as part of the Microsoft Office suite of
programs, which include Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Publisher. Word can be used to format text andbuild layout documents.
WordPerfect
WordPerfect is a word processing application from Corel Corp. WordPerfect was popular in the early
1990s. It is best for writing simple essays and articles. Though it isn't used as much today, WordPerfect is
compatible with Microsoft Word, meaning that you can open and edit WordPerfect files in the Word
program, then save them as WordPerfect files again. WordPerfect also can be used for formatting and
laying out documents.
Lotus Word Pro
If you use Lotus Notes or Lotus 1-2-3--common in corporate environments--Lotus Word Pro is an ideal
program for your word processing needs. This program works in concert with Lotus applications to allow
you to create and distribute formatted text documents. It is produced and distributed by IBM Corp.
Lotus Word Pro is also compatible with Microsoft Word and ideal for writing reports, memos and
proposals.

iWork Pages
Pages is a word processing program offered by Apple Incorporated. It is a part of Apple's iWork suite of
programs. Pages allows you to perform basic word processing functions--writing and formatting--as well
as more complex graphical layout actions. You can open and save Pages files in Microsoft Word.
Others
There are dozens of word processors on the market. Other lesser-known word processors include
OpenOffice Writer, Adobe InCopy, AbiWord, Microsoft Works and Scrivener. A growing number of
online word processors are available and include Google Docs and Microsoft Office Web Apps.
