TEMPLE DANE PUMP STATION Mustang SUD — Denton County, Texas Specific Energy Works with Mustang Special Ulity District to Improve Pumping Operaons while Eliminang Nitrificaon Staon Summary For almost 50 years, Mustang Special Ulity District (SUD) has provided high quality water to its customers in North Texas. In 2009, the 2.25 million gallon Byran Rd. elevated storage tank, Mustang SUD’s largest project to date, went into service. The Byran Rd. tank is supplied by the Temple Dane Pump Staon. The Temple Dane Pump Staon includes a 2 million gallon ground storage tank and five pumps – three pumps equipped with VFDs and two fixed- speed pumps. Nitrificaon Problems Due to the physical layout of the Byran Road tank and the Temple Dane Pump Staon, the water in the Byran Road tank would remain in the tank for extended periods of me and become stale (the disinfectant residual levels fell below the minimum required levels). The low disinfectant residual levels allowed nitrificaon to occur in the tank. Specific Energy Eliminates Nitrificaon Specific Energy developed a three-phase level control scheme that would ensure that fresh water was periodically moved into the tank. A common alternave soluon would be for Mustang to install a chloraminaon facility at or near the Byran Road tank. However, this would have been a costly soluon in terms of capital and maintenance costs. Specific Energy’s level control scheme increased the disinfectant residual in the tank to acceptable levels at a minimal cost. Addionally, Specific Energy developed an intuive user interface that allows Mustang’s operators to fine tune the parameters of the level control scheme, ensuring flexibility in the face of changing system condions. Ensuring Long Pump Life Specific Energy’s Opmizaon Suite ensures that Temple Dane’s pumps operate within their Preferred Operang Ranges (PORs) at all mes, dramacally extending each pump’s lifespan. The level control scheme forces Temple Dane’s pumps to operate at a wide range of stac heads that would generally force the pumps to operate outside of their PORs for extended periods of me. However, the Opmizaon Suite uses models of each pump to determine each pump’s POR and ensure that each pump’s operang speed keeps the pump within its POR. “We were looking for cost- effecve soluons to our nitrificaon issues when we talked with Specific Energy about our problem. I am impressed with Specific Energy’s ability to solve our issues.” -Aldo Zamora, Operaons Manager, Mustang SUD specificenergy.com 2013-07-12 Comprehensive Pump Asset Management and Optimization

Station Summary For almost 50 years, Mustang Special Utility District (SUD) has provided high quality water to its customers in North Texas. In 2009, the 2.25 million gallon Byran Rd. elevated storage tank, Mustang SUD’s largest project to date, went into service. The Byran Rd. tank is supplied by the Temple Dane Pump Station. The Temple Dane Pump Station includes a 2 million gallon ground storage tank and five pumps – three pumps equipped with VFDs and two fixed-speed pumps.

Nitrification Problems Due to the physical layout of the Byran Road tank and the Temple Dane Pump Station, the water in the Byran Road tank would remain in the tank for extended periods of time and become stale (the disinfectant residual levels fell below the minimum required levels). The low disinfectant residual levels allowed nitrification to occur in the tank.

Specific Energy Eliminates Nitrification Specific Energy developed a three-phase level control scheme that would ensure that fresh water was periodically moved into the tank. A common alternative solution would be for Mustang to install a chloramination facility at or near the Byran Road tank. However, this would have been a costly solution in terms of capital and maintenance costs. Specific Energy’s level control scheme increased the disinfectant residual in the tank to acceptable levels at a minimal cost. Additionally, Specific Energy developed an intuitive user interface that allows Mustang’s operators to fine tune the parameters of the level control scheme, ensuring flexibility in the face of changing system conditions.

Ensuring Long Pump Life Specific Energy’s Optimization Suite ensures that Temple Dane’s pumps operate within their Preferred Operating Ranges (PORs) at all times, dramatically extending each pump’s lifespan. The level control scheme forces Temple Dane’s pumps to operate at a wide range of static heads that would generally force the pumps to operate outside of their PORs for extended periods of time. However, the Optimization Suite uses models of each pump to determine each pump’s POR and ensure that each pump’s operating speed keeps the pump within its POR.
