Introduction

To save money on car insurance, some opt to buy basic liability policies. While generally inexpensive, these policies are limiting in the kinds of damage they’ll cover. For a more comprehensive policy, you will have to buy comprehensive coverage.

Comprehensive insurance coverage covers non-accident related damage. In this presentation, we’ll look at the benefits of having comprehensive insurance and whether or not you need it.

What “Comprehensive” Means

Comprehensive insurance coverage is just that – a comprehensive policy that protects you from having to foot the cost for non-accident related damage. Typical comprehensive insurance policies cover damage caused by:

– Severe weather – Natural disasters – Fire and explosions – Flying or falling objects – Windshield damage – Vandalism– Theft– Collision with an animal

Who Needs Comprehensive Insurance?

In California, drivers are only required to carry liability insurance. But if you finance or lease your vehicle, your lender most likely requires you to buy comprehensive coverage.

Who Should Buy Comprehensive Coverage?

Even if you’re not required to buy a comprehensive policy, some people will benefit from doing so. These include those with expensive vehicles for whom the cost of comprehensive coverage is much less than the cost of replacing the car.

Who Should Skip Comprehensive Coverage?

A good rule of thumb is if your vehicle is older, or the cost of replacement is relatively low, you may consider skipping comprehensive coverage. This is because comprehensive coverage may end up costing more money than you’ll likely get for your car should it become damaged.

Know Your Risks

Buying car insurance is all about mitigating risk. If you know you can’t afford to replace your vehicle should it become damaged, a comprehensive policy may be for you. Otherwise, you might be better off putting the money you save by not buying comprehensive coverage into a “rainy day” savings account.
