Comprehension Worksheet (6)

Class : Primary 3 _______ Date : ___________

Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

The book, Revolting Rhymes by Roald Dahl, is a humorous set of poems

which claims to tell the true story behind a few famous and beloved fairy tales. In

it, Roald Dahl rewrites the fairy tales we are familiar with and gives them a new

twist.

The situations in the stories are highly unusual and the morals of the stories

are unique. For instance, in one of the poems, the smelly Beanstalk Giant vows

to bathe every day because this would help him to easily sniff out his victims. In

another rhyme, Cinderella discovers that her Prince is not a gentleman and

decides that she wants a simple husband. In the end, she marries a jam maker

and lives happily ever after.

One memorable poem in the book relates the Three Little Pigs story with a

very unusual twist: One of the pigs asks Little Red Riding Hood – who shoots

well with a gun – to help him deal with the Big Bad Wolf. While we are enjoying

this fairy tale *cameo, Roald Dahl springs yet another surprise on us (Read the

book to find out what happens!).

Clever and inventive, the silliness and lunacy of these poems show how

much fun Roald Dahl probably had in writing them, and you are most likely to

derive a lot of pleasure from reading them too!

*cameo: special appearance
