COMPREHENSION PASSAGE

Comprehension Passage A very good morning to Mr Soong and my classmates. Today, I would like to share with you what I saw on my trip to Sarawak during the last holidays. On one of the mornings, my family and I went trekking into the forest. After three hours, we came to a longhouse where we rested and had a quick lunch. Then we continued walking. We were on our way to see a special flower. This particular flower has no specific flowering season. Many have ventured into the forest to look for it with no luck. After an hour of walking, I smelt something foul in the air. The flower was close by. The flower is called rafflesia, the biggest flower in the world. This is a plant that is commonly found in certain parts of Southeast Asia. The rafflesia that I saw was about half a metre in diameter. Some of them can grow up to one metre in diameter. There were six petals covered with light coloured spots. This is a parasitic plant, meaning it lives off other plants. It does not have roots, stems or leaves. Initially, the rafflesia looks like a small dark brown bud attached to another plant. After nine months, the bud opens, lasting for five to six days. When in full bloom, there will be a foul smell which attracts flies and other insects. I pinched my nose as we approached the flower. It was amazing as it was a really big flower. Unfortunately, I could not stand the smell for long. I ran back up the trail to wait for the rest of my family. Finally, I would like to pass around a few pictures of the rafflesia flower for you to see. Thank You.
