A Successful Journey

My mother, an amazing daughter, sister and wife. She had a dream and never let it go despite the difficulties that she had to face during her life .She has always been my inspiration and always will be. She may come across as being strict to my brothers, but to me and my sisters she is the most affectionate and loving person we have ever come across. She has always been there for me when I have needed her and supported me throughout my life. This is an account showing the journey she made during her struggling and fascinating life.

Rahma Ali was born on the 14th April, in 1978. She was the oldest child and had three younger sisters whom are now my aunties. During the early stages of my mother’s life she had been known as a young girl who was extremely serious about her education and was a hardworking young girl with a strong potential and determination for her studies.

Sadly, on November 5th 1986, my grandfather passed away. Sorrowfully my mother faced a tremendous challenge having to look after her younger sisters after her mother’s illness of arthritis was gradually deteriorating. At the age of only eleven she faced the responsibility of caring for her younger siblings and caring for her mother as she was the eldest in her family .My mother did not always cherish this crucial responsibility.

Unfortunately, when my grandfather died, my mother was only a school child at only the age of eleven studying back in her hometown in Somalia. Moreover she had to risk her education in order to get an occupation as a maid which would earn money for her family to survive. My mother worked as a maid for a wealthy and middle class family who were very good friends with my grandfather before he passed away. Quickly my mother’s dream and ambitions for her future of becoming a nurse began to fade away and she began to think that she was doomed in a lifetime of horror. Mr and Mrs Suhaib were the wealthy family that my mother was working for and they gave birth to two angelic daughters named Salma and Sumaya. My mother worked diligently and generously hard in order to preserve and fulfil the family’s wishes until in fact Mr Suhaib noticed that my mother had big ambitions for her future and that her opportunity had been shattered apart, kindly Mr. Suhaib had offered to take my mother to school along with his two daughters. Generously Mr Suhaib offered to provide my mother with transport allowing my mother to enter Mr.Suhaib’s car. Although Mr.Suhaib only had a Honda my mother described this as an un-imaginable and desirable experience for a young child growing up back in those days.

On 1992 my mother was offered a scholarship placement in a college in England to study nursing, at the age of sixteen in Birmingham. My mother had always wanted to leave her hometown village in the torrid summer months. It was a tremendous relief for her to get out of the heated hustle and bustle of summer living. There upon as things were going well for my mother, my grandmother sorrowfully and gloomily passed away. My mother had no other choice than to take her sisters on her journey with her. My mother was accompanied by her two younger siblings on her exhausting journey.

My mother boarded a ship, and it took her thirteen days to arrive in England, my mother thought she wouldn’t make it. There were approximately a hundred people who boarded the same boat as her; the ship was actually intended for thirty people to board but because there were a hundred people on the same ship , people had to co-operate in order to make it a prosperous and successful journey. The salesmen who my mother and her sisters had brought the tickets from had guaranteed them that the journey would take less than three days therefore my mother and her younger sibling began to lose hope as the journey took a lot of time. When my mother and her younger siblings saw the Big Ben they began to gain hope as they knew they had arrived their destination successfully.

At this stage my mother had little knowledge of English and could barely speak. After my mother attended the college to study nursing , she was given a scholarship in she was taught English and could soon speak it .After two years my mother graduated and was happy to know that she had finally fulfilled her wish of becoming a nurse. After eight years of working as a nurse my mother decided to get married to my father and soon gave birth to a cute chubby boy and the following year I came sprinting into the world .Now Rahma Ali has seven healthy kids.

I admire my mother. She brought me to this world, cared for me, and taught me my basic knowledge which I appreciate. She is my protector and angel in this world. In the future if I could be a mother, I would love to be like my dear mother; a special woman with lots of love to give. My mother is truly my inspiration.
