Anne Frank TrustAnne Frank Ambassadors Project

About. The Anne Frank Trust is the Britishpartner organisation of the world famous Anne Frank House in Amsterdam and is awell established organisation, having toured their exhibition since 1990. It hasworked in Durham and the North East since 2006, during which time 20,000 youngpeople have taken part in their activities.

The need. The Anne Frank Trust works in areas of social and economicdeprivation of the North East where there are few leadership opportunities. Theseinclude towns within County Durham, Northumberland and North Tyneside. Each ofthese districts falls within areas of disadvantage as defined by the English indices ofDeprivation 2007.Furthermore the young people within the areas where the project focuses may be atrisk of extremist views as intolerant politics is common within these regions.

The solution. The young people who are part of this project will lead aseries of exhibitions which aim to challenge racism and prejudice. In partnership

with Stonewall and Show Racism the Red Card the Anne Frank Ambassadors projecthas two ambitions. On the one hand the project works to develop the leadershipabilities of the young people involved; for example an insight into liaising withvenues, training other people and an introduction to campaigning. On the other handthe theme of the project is anti discrimination and thus works to educate youngpeople about issues of racism, prejudice and discrimination.Once the Ambassadors have been inducted they lead a peer education programmethat will place exhibitions and deliver workshops in 12 venues reaching a further15,000 young people.

What happened?25 young people have been recruited and trained as

Anne Frank Ambassadors and have been part of a community cohesion festival inNorthumberland. The festival worked to encourage positive attitudes and respect forothers. It comprised a two day teacher training and Anne Frank Ambassador peereducation training program.

Challenges: At this stage the organizers have struggled to engage and build abond with NEETs. This is largely due to their distrust of the official education system. There has also been a challenge in recruiting travelers and BMEs. The project aimsto work on this in the future.

    Campaign for National Parks Mosaics

About. The Campaign for National Parks (CNP) is the only national charity thatcampaigns and speaks out to protect and promote National Parks. CNP is anumbrella of nearly 40 environmental and amenity groups across England and Walesand it aims to give the voluntary sector a shared vision and voice on all National Parkissues. For the last ten years CNP have been working with National Park Authoritiesacross England and Wales on a national flagship outreach project targeting BME

    communities.

The need. The project plans to recruit participants who live in areas ofdeprivation who may suffer from inequalities and social divisions. These areas areExeter, Barnstaple, Bristol, Ilfracombe, Minehead, Plymouth and Taunton. The target audience of this project is individuals who are unlikely to experiencedevelopment and leadership opportunities because of additional barriers due tosocial divisions such as disabilities and ethnic minorities.

The solution. Each young person involved will be given the role of

Champion to promote the Parks to others via four pathways. Firstly by organisingtrips and visits to the parks, secondly by promoting the parks through publicity andsocial networking sites, thirdly by training others and leading other young people tobecome champions and finally by influencing and advising the board by thinking upnew and different ideas and by furthermore young proofing the services provided. There are two benefits of this approach. On the one hand the young people developa range of skills such as leadership capabilities and organisational skills. FurthermoreNational Parks are promoted to young people who may not have visited then before.

What happened? At this stage of the project direct contact has beenmade with 12 youth organisations and 30 young people, and a total of about 75

young people have signed up to attend the first 5 taster days. The taster days havebeen booked for July and August, during and after which it is expected that most ofthe young champions will be signed up and confirmed. Four young people havesigned up as young champions.

Three overnight weekends have been planned for 17-19 September; 1-3 October;20-22 October.

    Groundwork Future Footprints

About. Groundwork Manchester, Salford,Stockport, Tameside and Trafford (MSSTT) andGroundwork Leeds are members of a nationalFederation of Trusts that aims to build sustainable communities in areas of need anddeprivation through environmental action. They work to address three strategicpriorities; firstly to create opportunities for people to learn new skills and to becomemore active citizens, secondly delivering environmental improvements that create

cleaner, safer and greener neighbourhoods and finally prosperity by helpingbusinesses and individuals to fulfil their potential.

The need. The project works on two levels. Firstly it works to challengecommon perceptions of young people. It does this through trying to work with non-traditional leaders who may be at risk of engaging in criminal behavior, NEETs, andyoung people living in deprived neighborhoods. Secondly the project works tointroduce issues of climate change to a body of individuals who would not usuallyengage with the issue.

The solution. The young people involved in the scheme will participate inweekly workshops. These workshops will be in relation to different things such asworking on sustainability projects, youth forums, amongst other things which relateto climate change action. The aim is to show that young people can influence changewhich is relevant to them and their community and to also show ways to activelypparticipate in local democracy.

Once the initial group of young people have been involved it is hoped that they willinform their peers and this will thus recruit more participants. Their development willthen be presented at an event and 3rd sector information sharing day.

What happened? Partnership has been established with three localdelivery areas; Lancashire Hill/Heaton Norris estate in Stockport, Moss side andHulme in Manchester and the Armadale road Estate in Dunkinfield, Ashton. Theproject has currently worked with 30 young people.

Challenges: Delay in recruiting young people and the recruitment period isstill in progress.

National Community Boating AssociationCommunity Boating Leadership Programme

About. The NCBA is a national membership association with 61 membercommunity boating organisations. They aim to promote the waterways as places toexperience excitement, enjoyment, and interaction. The organisation facilitatessharing of good practice between organisations, provides training to communitymembers, provide focussed leadership opportunities for young people fromdisadvantaged groups and provide a collective voice for raising waterway issues andpromote the waterways as a place for building communities.

The need. The project aims to target disengaged young people who maystruggle or underachieve in mainstream education. However at this stage activitiesare largely adult led and where young people take the lead there is only ad-hocsharing of learning. It has thus been identified that young people need greater

genuine leadership opportunities. The solution. The young people are taught about waterways and are thusprovided with a challenge to overcome. It is hoped that the process will build theconfidence and skills of the participants. The young people will be introduced toboating awareness and gain insight into the environment. They will work with theproject full time over a minimum of four days. The project involves more thanlearning about waterways. It provides a challenge to overcome and something towork towards which some of the participants will not have engaged with previously.

The project will continue to work at a multi-regional level with the ambition of scaling

up to become national. The young people will ultimately gain a certificate in boatingand captaincy.

What happened?A steering group has been formed and a coordinator hasbeen employed. Trainers have been trained and they are now ready to work with theyoung people.

Challenges:There has been a delay in the recruitment of young people astime has recently been spent on preparing the organization for delivery.http://www.national-cba.co.uk/

PRAXIS Community ProjectYoung Voices East London

About. At the core of Praxiss work is anattempt to advance the education and relieve thepoverty, sickness and distress of members of the public, particularly refugees, migrants and asylum seekers. As an organisation they have a strong reputation inthe 3rd sector and the local community and have good connections with their targetaudience.

The need. Included within the chosen area of East London are the three mostdeprived areas of the 354 English local authority areas (Index of Multiple Deprivation2007). The partners have been working in these areas for over 20 years and thereare known grassroots contacts and a strong understanding of the area.

The area continues to experience migration and the arrival of new communities. These changes mean that young people entering the community are constantlyfacing new challenges in relation to language barriers and social and culturaldifferences. They also struggle in school as the support is limited.

The solution. Young Voices East London encourages the young peopleinvolved to realise their ability to influence meaningful change. In partnership withKazzum Arts the young people are introduced to a range of leadership skills to equipthem in this challenge. A summer school will then be held at Queen Marys Universitywhich will introduce young people to understandings of migration and civicengagement. They will then choose a main issue to work on. The above twoelements will then be combined and their main issue developed. At the end they willorganise and present at the Praxis New Voices Festival to local supporters anddecision makers.

What happened? So far 11 young people have been involved in theproject. These young people are from a range of backgrounds. Some are homeless, some are refugees or asylum seekers, and some are NEETs. The summer school isunderway and is set to include different lessons and events including a visit toMayors Question Time at City Hall. This will hopefully highlight pathways toinfluencing policy at both a local and regional level.

Challenges: The primary problem that the project faces is recruitment. Thetarget group is often found to have other commitments or responsibilities such as acaring responsibility in their home and they thus find it difficult to commit to theproject.

RADARYoung Disabled People as Leaders and Influencers

About. RADAR is a pan-disabilityorganisation led by people experiencing ill health, injury or disability and isthe UK's largest disability campaigning organisation, with amembership of over 900 disability organisations and individual campaigners.Community Service Volunteers (CSV) works with young people and adults to develop

their confidence and skills to help them progress into future education andemployment. RADAR plans to work in partnership with CSV to deliver betterleadership opportunities for young disabled people.

The need. The need of this project is twofold. On the one hand the projectaims to address the issue that few young disabled individuals are in positions ofleadership. As local disability groups claim they do not have enough resources orknowledge of how to address the issue there is a need for a service to meet theconcerns. But a further hurdle faced by these young people is where they arepositioned geographically. The chosen regions have the highest incidences of youngNEET people (Labour Force Survey 2009).

The solution. The project plans to host five separate events to 150 small tomedium sized disability organizations where the young disabled leaders will act asproviders of guidance and promoters of a youth-inspired approach. Prior to thetraining days RADAR will recruit, train and develop 10 aspiring young disabledleaders.

These training days will show organisations the way in which they can develop andopen up their leadership opportunities and possibilities. It is hoped that theorganisations will then successfully design and open up high quality leadership

opportunities and convey their commitment to engage the target group and recruitcapable and ambitious individuals.

What happened? The recruitment process is well underway. A range ofmediums have been used during recruitment such as facebook, twitter, disabledpeoples organisations, liaising with schools and using both RADARs and CSVscontacts.

Challenges: There has been an interest from older disabled people in thescheme. However they have been above the age limit.http://www.youngdisabledleaders.com/

Streetgames & Football League TrustYoung Ideas

About. Street Games and the FootballLeague Trust have joined together to deliver thisproject with a range of partners including England 2018 World Cup Bid, LOCOG andSportscoach UK. Both organisations have extensive experience of working in youthsports leadership and have built a reputation within this field.

The need. The programme will initiate 10 local projects across 6 Englishregions; the South-East, East, Yorkshire and Humber, North-East, North-West andthe East Midlands. These areas have been selected as they have high proportions ofNEET and highly disadvantaged young people. Furthermore the partners havenoticed an appetite amongst the young people in these areas for sporting andleadership opportunities. It is believed that their needs and aspirations are not beingmet.

The solution. All the young participants will take a leadership position intheir neighbourhood which will include the planning and delivering of local events.

This process will help build the participants confidence and skills.Hopefully the youngpeople will then be able to gain accredited awards including, Asdan, SLUK and NGBAward; and Youth Achievement Awards. These awards will be evidence of the youngpeoples communicating skills, leadership capabilities, and their ability to plan andorganise.

The ultimate ambition is to then take the project to a national scale, which will thusincrease the number of young people involved. The young people who have a desireto further develop their leadership skills will be trained and mentored alongsideYoung Advisors and given the opportunity to shape the plans and delivery of a rangeof regional and national sports agencies.

There are also additional benefits of having such a range of partners. For exampleThe London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) will help developopportunities for young people to take a lead in shaping legacy planning for London2012 in disadvantaged areas at both a regional and national level.

What happened? All projects have spent the first quarter setting up theirprogramme and recruiting young people. Leadership programmes are due to startnext month. All the projects which are involved have attended a national training andinduction day and all projects have planned their local young ideas programme.

Cumbria Youth AllianceSkills for Working Futures

About. Cumbria Youth Alliance (CYA) is an established organisation with 120member organisations and covers the whole of Cumbria. It is a key sign-postingorganisation for young people, workers, organisations, parents and carers, with over100 organisations as members from all over Cumbria. Essentially it is an umbrella

youth organisation, working to support and build capacity of local youthorganisations and as well as a delivery organisation for children and young people. The need. Skills for Working Futures aims to target young people agedbetween 14 and 25 who are in danger of becoming socially and economicallyexcluded. The organisation is already working with NEET young people in certainareas of Allerdale and Copeland through funding from Coalfields Regeneration. However they are hoping to expand the scheme to young people in other areasacross Cumbria such as Barrow in Furness and Carlisle. Within these areas there arefew opportunities for young people who do not follow the traditional academic routeto development and eventual employment.

The solution. The scheme works to develop the participants through anarray of actions. This includes team building and community volunteering. Theproposed idea is that a young person would approach the scheme with an idea abouta project they would like to start or an idea of something they would like to developin their community. Following this a joint partnership is made with the young personand a unique plan of action is designed. This process aims to build on the leadershipskills and aspirations of the young person whilst also overcoming personal barriersand addressing educational needs.

The Skills for Working Futures program aims to target young people at risk of

economic and social exclusion. The scheme provides a customised and supportivecommunity leadership programme enabling young people to gain personal, socialand vocational skills during either a 26 or 52 week course. They will also attendmonthly training lessons which introduce social, interpersonal and emotional skills.

    Deafinitions

About. Deafinitions Limited is a nonprofit social enterprise providing custommade information for deaf, British Sign Language (BSL) users with clear, fluent BSLgraphics and visual material. The organisation is lead by deaf people for deaf people

along with the assistance of the Youth Management Committee (YMC) who havereceived training in a range of skills. The need. Young deaf people can sometimes struggle in mainstream youthculture. For instance they may struggle to feel comfortable in ordinary youth clubs ordrama/filming clubs because of the communication barrier. By working with otherdeaf youth, and by making a film for a deaf audience, the communication barrier iseliminated and they can focus on a creative project. The solution. The ambition of Deafinitions is to offer young deaf people aunique leadership opportunity; to express themselves and develop their artistic

talents by making their own short films. The organisers will provide support andtraining.

The participants will work on a range of skills such as working as part of a team, writing scripts, filming, directing, acting and editing. These films will then besubmitted to the first ever youth-led SignFilm festival.

The process will be supported by deaf professionals in the field along with the YMC.The YMC will organise the entire project and plan a Film Festival to showcase all thefilms at the National Media Museum.

What happened? During May 2010 the SignFilm festival took place at theNational Media Museum in Bradford. The YMC played an important role in theorganising of the event and they were part of the panel which assessed the films. The event was a great success and was attended by over 150 people. Since theevent took place positive feedback has been received from participants of theprogramme and spectators of the event.

Challenges: The original intention was for the project to reach 120 people, unfortunately there were only 60 participants. However this hopefully meant that thequality of the scheme was greater.

    Higher Rhythm

About. Higher Rhythm is a Doncaster based not-for-profit company with amission to provide access to high quality musical and creative services for all. Theyhave a purpose-built facility, in premises leased from the local authority in centralDoncaster. They provide a range of services including high quality recording, training, accreditation and taster courses and they run a full time community radiostation called SINE FM. The community radio station was set up at Higher Rhythmrecording studios three years ago and in September 2009 they launched asDoncasters first FM licensed community radio station.

The need. The target group for this project are young people who live in ageographical area of disadvantage as defined by the English Indices of Deprivation2007.The solution. The project aims to engage the young people in 20 hours ofwork with the ambition of developing reports for a youth orientated radio show. Thereports will be transmitted on the radio station, SINE FM. The reports will address

issues which are relevant to the young people and social issues which relate to them.

In order to provide a flexible and supportive environment the scheme will bedelivered during the evening and at weekends in the central Doncaster communityradio studio and outreach will also be provided using our mobile broadcast vehicle.

The plan is that as a result of this training, young people will have the opportunity todevelop a specific role as a presenter, editor or producer and be involved as peermentors for future youth training.

What happened? The project has worked with 34 young people so far. 26of the learners have completed an additional NCFE Podcasting qualification, with theremaining learners due to be externally assessed in the New Year. They delivered all35 sessions, both out in the community and at our Media facilities in Doncaster towncentre. The young people have all planned and produced radio content which hasalready been aired on the station.Challenges: The programme did not start as anticipated for to two reasons:There was a very sceptical view of the media in Doncaster after a horrendous attackon two young boys. Secondly they allowed the young people to plan the projectthemselves and they had some problems with one group who couldnt attend thefinal sessions due to exams at school.

    Starlight Music Academy

About. Starlight Music Academy (SMA) was set upthree years ago and delivers music and performing arts programs in a safe andsupportive learning environment that stimulates the development of young peoplescreative skills as well as equipping them with the motivation needed to encouragethem to consider further training at college, university or the creative arts sector.

Reach Role Models is a national Government initiative which comprises around 20individuals who have an understanding of the lives of young black men and theywork to tackle problems which these people might face.

The need. The scheme aims to target young black males specifically. It isbelieved that these individuals are in particularly insecure positions both socially andeconomically. This is compounded further by the area they live in which is the 9thmost deprived in England and at ward level over 50% rank within the 10% mostdeprived wards in England. The solution. The scheme plans to source 30 young people who will engagein five three hour leadership workshops over 3 months. The purpose of the classes isto educate young leaders and develop their self confidence. The workshops will be inpartnership with the organisation REACH role models. The participants will worktowards an event which they will help organise which will be the Youth REACHLeadership Role Model event in April 2010. The lessons learnt by the participantswill thus reach a further 100 individuals (attendees at the event).

What happened? The project has come to an end. Some examples of theevents which were held include the launch on 14th November 2009 with 50 attendeesand a panel of inspirational speakers. Another event was held on 23 rd January 2010which introduced the art of debating and negotiations along with issues of identitywith 67 attendees. The work that the project has been doing has been receivingdiverse local press coverage including mention in the South London Press, LighteningFM, and Genesis Radio.

The finale was held at Le Merdian Hotel on Saturday 24th April.

Challenges:One challenge faced was the issue of maintaining young peoplein program. At one session 67 people attended and at the next only 27 of the samepeople attended. How do we maintain attendance?

    Theatre 503 Ltd

About. This scheme is acollaboration between Theatre 503, Wadsworth based youth centres, schools andvoluntary organisations. The aim is to educate participants about different elementsof theatre. Theatre 503 have 2 years experience of working with disadvantagedyoung people in the local area through their programme with Wandsworth Council. They also have a good reputation for encouraging new and young talent. The need. Often young people are labeled with negative stereotypes. Inrelation to the Wandsworth Borough creative leadership opportunities for NEETyoung people are limited. Theatre 503 Ltd contends that if given the right frameworkand support young people can actually be effective leaders. The solution. The program will recruit 25 NEET or at risk young people. These individuals will work in groups of 5 and will be trained and supportedthroughout the programme by expert tutors and mentors in partnership with aprofessional theatre. Each week they will participate in workshops and training

sessions which address different aspects of putting on a theatre show. Skills taughtwill include the designing, production and directing of a theatre production. Theyoung people will ultimately put on their own performance at the Wandsworth ArtsFestival. Furthermore training on project management, leadership, budgeting andICT skills will be provided by JPMorganFoundations.

What happened? It was their initial aim to recruit 25 Young CreativeLeaders who would then recruit an additional 30 Young people to help out on theproductions. They managed to recruit 22 Young leaders who engaged regularly and22 additional young people who worked directly on the productions. They areextremely pleased with this level of retention, far higher than one might expect

working with NEET young people. The organisation is now also registered as an OCNaccrediting centre and out of the 22 young leaders, 12 went on to receiveaccreditation in theatre management and performance.

Challenges: some of the challenges wererecruiting and retaining NEET youngpeople, getting the young people to the project as they had so much reportingprocess. Using the job centre as a resource for advertising the project as a way ofengaging young people who were out of work was also an issue. they were verydismissive of the project and said they only advertised paid work.

    TruStreet Dance Academy

About. Founded in 1999 theTruStreetDance Academy aims to offer aspace for young people to develop their dancing abilities. The Academy aims toprovide structured progression opportunities including management and governanceopportunities, paid work and accredited learning. They hope to raise the profile ofstreet dance.

The need. The Project is designed to target young multicultural individualsliving in the city of Birmingham. These young people are from hard to reachcommunities. Furthermore the young people often have few opportunities to developtheir career in the performing arts industry. The solution. The body of young people who participate in the scheme willcontribute to the Academy Board and are given the opportunity to implement abusiness strategy. This will then include the designing, marketing, and delivering of adance program.

The areas within which the young people will work include shadowing the

choreographer, accounts, PR & marketing, studio co-ordinator, administration, multi-media, business development & sustainability, and management.

The network that the Academy is in also sparks potential networking andemployment opportunities.

What happened? By January 2010 rapid progress was being made andtraining sessions in modelling, photo shoots, website, choreography, make up andvideo analysis were being provided for 10 participants. Also during this time some ofthe group had been trained to run the studio space themselves. They now work oneday a week where they look after visitors and manage the reception amongst other

Aston Athletics Basketball ClubHoops4Health Leadership Program

About. The Aston Athletics BasketballClub is the largest basketball club inBirmingham, nurturing and operating teams at all ages and skill levels. Theorganisation has been in existence for over twenty five years. Two years ago theclub took on a community interest status and began to further expand theirbasketball programmes into schools and the community. The Hoops4Health Program

was delivered to over 60 schools last year.

The need. Young people can often be categorized under a negativestereotype. This is only compounded further if young people are living in an area ofdeprivation. Ashton Athletics Basketball Club believes young people need to beinvolved in positive and constructive activities. Therefore the organization wishes tohelp reduce the number of NEET young people and tackle issues such asworklessness and disaffection within the Birmingham area.

    The solution. The scheme aims to provide training on a range of skills;

including project management and community development to a group of 10 youngpeople. The project also provides employment opportunities. Young people will berecruited, trained and mentored as youth leaders to thus influence social changethrough the medium of basketball. They will then be expected to contribute to thedelivery of the Hoops4Health scheme.

10 young people will spend 10 hours a week over a 12 month period working in ahigh quality youth leadership role. Once a young person is referred to the projectthey would be expected to develop a Birmingham A's Basketball Club in their area.

What happened? At the first stage of assessment the project is makinggood progress. The original plan of having 10 young people involved has grown to15 young people being involved. The participants are currently receiving 10 hours oftraining a week in all sections of basketball industry with matches being played everySaturday.

The project has had no problem recruiting young participants and there are moreyoung people wanting to get involved. There are also more women being recruitedwhich has previously been a problem the organization faced.

Challenges:The only main issue facing the scheme is in relation to costs tofund venues and training.

    Eclectic Reprezent Leaders

About. Eclectic Productions is a social enterprise which was set up in 2002 bylocal residents and media professionals in response to large numbers of local youngpeople being disengaged from education and lacking a voice in mainstream media. The need. The young people which the scheme aims to target have very fewleadership opportunities. This could be due to a range of things; including beingexcluded from school, being youth offenders or because of their personalcircumstances. The participants are likely to be from areas which fall within the 10%most deprived nationally.

The solution. 18 young people will be trained to prepare material forReprezent- an online radio station serving young people in Southwark and Lewisham. A campaign will be developed which is particularly relevant for the young peopleliving in the area. Three campaigns have been identified as particularly importantand relevant; sexual health and teenage pregnancy, postcode rivalry and young

peoples talent. Two sessions will be provided each week for a period of eight months. Training willinclude lessons on journalism, campaigns and mentoring.

The scheme will come to an end with an event where the Reprezent Leaders canpresent their findings to the local community including local MPs and the police.

The project works to motivate young people by developing skills and their ambitionsin the hope of breaking the cycle of poverty.

What happened? The program is still in its early stages. July has beenused as a recruitment period and the scheme is set to start on a revised date of 10

    th

    August 2010.

During February 2010 the three radio campaigns were decided. The radio station hasrecently secured an FM license.

The solution. Markfield already has a youth participation group calledMPower. This consists of a group of young disabled people (or their siblings) aged11-19. The group works to ensure that the voices of young disabled people areheard throughout the organisation and in the wider community. However MPowerhope to develop their Together 4 Change training programme by training a further16 disabled young people in running projects to better their community.

In 15 sessions across a year the participants will develop a training program whichwill be designed and delivered by the young disabled people themselves. This willinclude training in research and the marketing and publicizing of their project. Thepurpose of the program which they develop is to teach other young people about anarray of skills; such as how to work as part of a team, project design, fundraising

    and evaluation.

What happened? 13 young people have been involved.

At this stage five training sessions have been delivered. These lessons have been inrelation to social and emotional skills relating to leadership.

    Somerset Rural Youth Project

About. Somerset Rural Youth Project is a rural regeneration organisation whichhas 10 years experience of working with young people. The organisation haspreviously delivered a volunteering programme (funded by V Inspired) called the Young Leaders Network which has helped them put in place the procedures theyneed for this project. The need. The young leaders who participate in this scheme are recruitedbecause they are identified as disadvantaged as they come from rural areas ofSomerset where employment, transport and leadership opportunities are hard tosource. Their rural environment isolates them and limits their opportunities.

The organisation are working towards becoming more youth-led, but they arecurrently largely adult lend. There is a steering group but this has limited youthrepresentation on project input such as marketing and no young trusteerepresentation.

The solution. The SRYP Young Leaders Network will support 20 youngpeople from the volunteering programme over twelve months, through social and

emotional learning, to become leaders in their fields.

The areas currently identified by our young volunteers are musical and artisticperformance with associated events management, and community development forinstance starting and running a youth club. Each young person will engage in 60-120hours of training in leadership and development.

Each of the twenty young leaders will be accredited with a national 'V' award. Theywill also be encouraged where appropriate to train for a Youth Arts Award.

What happened? 4 young people have been involved in the project thus

far. Five young people have participated in four young leaders training sessions.Change in content of meetings. Instead of a focus on media, arts etc the youngpeople have shown more of an interest in gaining information on issues relating toadvice and guidance re: health and well being.

About. The Warrington Wolves Foundation is acentral part of Warrington Wolves Rugby League. It is an established organizationwhich works to build a strong sense of community while also promoting healthyliving and positive activities.

The need. The young leaders who will participate are disadvantaged in anumber of ways. Firstly they are living in rural areas with poor transport connections,

and secondly they live in deprived communities where there is a lack of funding bothpersonally and publicly for them to take part in activities.

The Foundation uses a youth leadership approach as it is the young peoplethemselves who notice gaps in local provision and develop ideas and prepareprojects to deal with them.

The solution. 20 young people will learn how to plan and deliver theirchosen activity in sports, media or arts over a course of a year and once theyrequalified this will then be delivered to a group of 500 young people in a minimum of4 activities. Skills learnt during this period will include communication skills, the

    READ International

About. READ International is a network of student-volunteer-led Book Projects, based at 45 British universities. They run free book collections from UK schools andsort through the books, matching them to the Tanzanian/Ugandan syllabus. Thosethat are relevant are re-distributed to schools in East Africa, where educationalresources are scarce. Those unsuitable are either resold or recycled to generate

    funds.

The need. The projects will create leadership opportunities by targeting sixthformers, in disadvantaged schools. These are schools where more than 30% ofstudents are eligible for free school meals, or there is only a 25% A* - C pass rate atGCSE, or they are classified as a National Challenge or a City Challenge school.

These are challenging environments for students to learn and excel in. ReadInternational want to give students the opportunity to shine beyond the scope ofexam results and to discover hidden talents, whilst gaining the enterprise andpractical skills needed for the workplace. To create the widest impact they are

therefore working n close collaboration with Teach First.

The solution. Young leaders will be responsible for setting up and runningtheir own READ School Book Project, within their school. By the end of March eachgroup of young leaders will have managed a group of young people to collect over5,000 books, raise 2000, saved 3 tonnes of waste from landfill, and helped toimprove the education of thousands of East African students.

Young leaders will be supported and visited by trained READ university student-volunteers monthly.

    Young People Cornwall

About.Young People Cornwall (YPC) is a registered charity and company limitedby guarantee which has been providing youth work projects across Cornwall since1974. YPCs vision is to improve the quality of life for young people living in Cornwall, they work to achieve this by delivering inspirational youth work which meets theneeds and aspirations of young people living in the county.

The need. The Clays is a very rural area where the transport and provisionoffered to young people are really poor; in terms of culture, health, education, positive activities and involvement in community decisions. The rural nature of theClays and the industry breakdown challenge access to services, training, employmentand leadership.

The average number of pupils involved in sports volunteering & leadership in theacademic year (07/08) in the Clays (10%) was far below the national average(16%). 120 young people aged 16-24 are Job Seekers (November 2008).The 3rdarea with the most school pupils with a level of special educational need in Cornwall

(school census 2009) is the Clays with 17.4%. In 2008, it was one of the 3 areasperforming below the county average for the achievement of 5 GCSE grades A*-Cincluding English and Maths. In St Dennis, 49% of the community has noqualification.

Many of these young people experience poverty, abusive relationships, violence &never had the opportunity to lead a project and influence local decision processesbefore. We want to offer these hard to reach young people opportunities to improvetheir leadership skills, and help raise motivation & aspirations.

The solution. To train 26 young sports leaders in the Clays (Cornwall) over9 months. These young leaders will then inspire 260 other disadvantaged youngpeople to join outdoors activities and / or local clubs.

    Muscular Dystrophy Group

About. Founded in 1959, the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign seeks to improvethe lives of over 70,000 people living with muscle disease throughout the UK (as wellas the estimated 350,000 people indirectly affected as relatives and carers). Our aimis a world where muscle disease is not a barrier to quality or length of life and doesnot lead to isolation and discomfort. To achieve this, the charity carries out

campaigning activities, undertakes social and medical research, and provides vitalcare and support services that are not available on the NHS.

The need. Muscular Dystrophys young leaders are part of the MuscularDystrophy Campaigns Trailblazers project, a national mentoring, support andcampaigning network for young people living with muscle disease.

Muscle disease is an umbrella term for 60 conditions that are characterised by theweakening and/or wasting of muscles. At present, there are no cures for any ofthese conditions, which are all long-term, serious and progressive, with effects thatrange from mild to severe disability and premature death.

Most young disabled people are often denied many opportunities that are availableto their non-disabled peers and find themselves to be the subject of charitable workrather than the driving force behind it. The Trailblazers project, led by youngdisabled people, has empowered them to further the causes most important to them, become more involved with the charitys campaigning strategy as a whole and hasgiven them the opportunity to develop new skills.

    GlosAid Youth Action

About. GlosAid aim to empower and enable young people to identify areas ofneed for themselves, their peers and the wider community. Young people are thensupported to plan, lead and evaluate projects that address those areas. This is donein an environment of support from both peers and older volunteers. As they progress

in their skills and confidence they then in turn support newer volunteers joining thecharity in the future.

The need. On speaking with young people within the local area the resoundingfeeling is that there is nothing to do or there is nothing affordable. Many youngpeople are unaware of volunteering opportunities or do not volunteer because theopportunities did not suit them. Perception of young people is also generally negativewith media daubing them with labels such as "yobs, hoodies and trouble makers"

Through a questionnaire of current volunteers GlosAid have identified that 49%consider themselves to be on a low income, 15% were disabled and 25% felt they

had no access to IT outside of education. They aim to target young people from arange of areas particularly those for whom barriers such as lack of income, disability, ethnic minority etc. may cause them to be discriminated against.

Within the county there are approximately 127,000 13-19 year olds.

The solution.A recruitment officer will be employed to recruit 100 newvolunteers using a variety of methods such as publications, the internet, street workand liaison with other agencies. Each young person will be given the opportunity todevelop, fundraise for and run a project of their choosing. Each young person will beable to run any project with the only limitations being it is safe, legal, ethical and

benefits the community. The young people will have total leadership over projectswith management and experienced volunteers being available to offer advice andsupport when requested or required. young people will have the opportunity toattend a residential training session, where skills such as leadership, projectmanagement and team building will be taught. The recruitment officer will have therole of recruiting volunteers and give management support to the new volunteers. This includes offering advice, providing training of skills both on residential trainingweekends and after. IARS is inclusive in its approach, but gives priority to disadvantagedyoung people who wouldn't otherwise get the opportunity to develop leadership skillsand become engaged in civic life and society. Based on our experience, and due tothe reasons outlined below, we prioritize the following groups of disadvantagedyoung people:

Those from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds: According to officialstatistics, this group continues to be exposed to discrimination, face economicdisadvantage and be over-represented in the criminal justice system. Low confidenceand marginalisation by formal structures tends to push this group to isolation oftentaking away their hopes.

Those out of education and employment: Due to personal circumstances or simplybecause of lack of employment opportunities, this group is highly exposed toexclusion from civic life and participation while they are pushed further into povertyand marginalisation.

The solution. Over 9 months, 25 disadvantaged young Londoners will beempowered through IARS skills-development programme and accreditationopportunities to influence policies and practices affecting them locally.

who are from areas of deprivation or are disadvantaged in some way. They aim to change lives by offering inclusion to marginalised groups, offeringsupport to young people to allow them to achieve their potential and we give youngpeople an opportunity to improve their lives through the game of cricket.

The need. The Cricket for Change Apprenticeship Programme' will work with 10individuals selected from our HTT clubs.

These 10 young leaders are disadvantaged due their disability, physical, learning orvisual impairment. It is important to highlight that many of our programmeparticipants are at risk from social isolation due to their disability and our programme

brings this group together to play a sport, have fun and interact with their peers.

The solution. The aim of this programme is to train 10 young, disabledpeople to become qualified cricket coaches, so they are then able to assist in therunning and coaching of the HTT clubs and act as positive role models for theparticipants as well as act as mentors on future apprenticeship programmes.

A significant proportion of the young people comefrom families who live with the impact of generational worklessness, which in turncontributes to current generations of worklessness, this in turn leads to a current

group of young people with extremely low aspirations and under average QEASwhich would enable them to become successful leaders within their communities. Asignificant number of young people have either never had the opportunity to leadand they lack the QEAS necessary to enable them to lead.

The solution. A week long youth led leadership scheme for 40 young peoplein October 2010 which will use sport, enterprise and music as a basis for youngpeople to develop the Qualities, Experiences Attitudes and Skills (QEAS) needed forthem to become successful leaders. The scheme will be the basis of communityaction led by young people from the local community.

    Hertfordshire PASS

About. Hertfordshire PASS is a user-driven charity using employment and selfdirected support to enable disabled people to live more independently. HertfordshirePASS uses a learning by experience approach to develop leadership in its 6apprentices. They believe that the best way to target young disabled people is

through the modelling of leadership by the 3 senior apprentices on the 3 juniorapprentices they manage. In turn this approach will be used with the 10 newapprentices appointed.

The need. WorkABILITY focuses on young disabled people, a group muchmore likely to be unemployed than many others. For example whilst nearly 1 in 5people of working age in the UK are disabled only about half of these are in work, compared with 80% of non disabled people (UKs Office for National StatisticsLabour Force Survey, Spring 2005).

The solution. The project plans to develop the leadership capacity of 6disabled young people employed as apprentices to manage WorkABILITY, a user-driven employment preparation programme, in employing a further 10apprentices.The project will enable 3 senior apprentices to lead 3 junior apprenticesto together lead WorkABILITY in providing for 10 new and additional apprenticesplaced with local employers. The project will primarily focus on all these apprenticesacquiring their apprenticeship qualification (NVQ Business and Admin (level 2), KeySkills and Technical Certificate). In addition to providing experience on the job,WorkABILITY will also dedicate 1 day / week to training and development, whereapprenticeship experiences can be shared and reflected on, portfolios (for NVQs)can be assembled, and invited adult visitors share their work story (including anyexperiences of leadership) in response to questions from the apprentices.
